New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

    Do you know "Piwis"?
Here it is: the PST 2 successor.
Much faster than the PST2, it can read out all Cayenne black boxes incl. errors in about 5 minutes (the old PST2 needed up to an hour) and with a software update by june or july, of course it will also handle the new 997.
Interesting: the Piwis seems to work with Windows Mobile 2003, it uses a touch screen (with a pen), it has two USB ports in the rear, a LAN port too and of course a PCMCIA slot.
We just played around with it today and it offers a lot of functions and options, in the wrong hands this little thing could really mess up things.

Re: New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

    it looks pretty nice.

Can they tell if your chip has been modified too? Or just for diagnosis purposes?

Re: New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

Yep, looks like it also can be connected to Porsche's internal network, so that the factory can have direct access to a car, wherever the shop is located.

Funny to see a bunch of RJ45 plugs on a car-lift...

PS: let's hope Porsche doesn't plan to have Windows run the car's internal! Otherwise, we'd need 3 more buttons on the dash: ctrl-alt-del

I heard they're testing a WLan access: Piwis in the car with a WLan PCMCIA card or connected to a WLan Access Point through the Lan port, Router connected to Porsche directly. Easier and faster diagnosis and of course...BAD times for chip mods.

To Ron: I've been told that a specific diagnosis printout can identify a modded software, the dealer usually can't see it directly in the Piwis.
With a broken engine or broken gearbox, Porsche always asks for a printout and they might even send a Porsche rep to the dealer. If this happens, EVERY modded software can be detected and even piggyback device doesn't help.

A Mercedes mechanic told me that they plan to introduce a system where the diagnosis is done completely by a factory system as soon as the car's black box is connected to a router at the dealership which sends out the data to the factory system and communicates with it in real-time.
This would make chip-tuning like playing russian roulette.

Re: New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

My service rep showed it to me two weeks ago. It really seems to be a step forward. A lot of functions are not available yet though.

It'll work the other way around too. They will be able to download the latest patches and upgrades directly to the car (once the PIWIS is connect to the car and to the network).

Unless you are living in the USA where the government has mandated that all MY2004 cars be in compliance with SAE J2534. Automotive manufacturers are required by law to support aftermarket chip tuning. The new flash rom loading & tuning software that aftermarket companies are now just starting to come out with are a result of this law.

Re: New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

    RC,

it looks exactly like the BMW tool. BMW use this part for around 3 years now. They have also wirless cradles, means, the put a small wirless box on the plug in the car and they are able to work either on the pad or on the desktop-station, without wiring. Very cool and fast tool.

Best on it, they used it on my BMW with the wirless plug, as Munich get online onto my car via the desktop station. So remote service is possible!

The MONTHLY subscription fee will be $1200USD on top of the $9700USD price tag...

    jandreas,

I think you'll find that auto manufacturers are only required to enable non-franchised shops to service products, including enabling access to diagnostics.

This is far from being the same thing as "supporting chip tuning", as anyone will find who tries to have his chip-tuned engine repaired under manufacturer's warrenty after it has tried to digest its own valve train.

"The new flash rom loading & tuning software that aftermarket companies are now just starting to come out with (as) a result of this law" are just an unintended side-effect of the new legislation. It's funny how often new laws result in unintended side effects which the legislators had failed to foresee.

    Pure coincidence!

Or maybe down to the fact that both systems are made by Bosch?

Re: New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

    where can I purchase PIWIS?

Re: New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

As far as I know, it can only be purchased directly from Porsche. Check for diagnostic tools on the Porsche website (web page). Look under Technical Service Information.

Re: New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

The BMW GT1 is manufactured by Siemens and is basicly a PIII 500 running on Unix
The PIWIS is a Bosch KTS 650 Win XPe with Porsche software written by Bosch
The PST2 is a Bosch KTS 500 Win 3.1 with Porsche software written by Bosch.

I bought a Porsche Piwis Tester II atUOBD2.net, very satisfied and recommend it to a friend in need, if you catch it in the promotional period, prices are more favorable oh

Re: New Porsche System Tester - PIWIS

I have a PIWIS II clone and it's works fine. It has most PIWIS II functionality, can reset error codes, code modules, read current module data, update module firmware etc. I bought it from obd2tool.com.
