    Boxster Turbo...a reality?

I know this rumor isn't new but it seems that Porsche wants to boost Boxster sales by offering a Boxster Turbo with 320 HP around 2003/2004.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

Now THAT will be a fantastic car!!!!!
Christian, my friend, so far, you have not disappointed me.
Let's hope you're right bc if you are this Boxster will be dynamite!!!
911 power with perfect balance, humm, sweet
    And less weight
But wouldn't that be the end of the 911 cab, I know I would switch straight away
I thought Porsche always refused the idea of a Boxster Turbo because of that.
    Francois.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

    Oh and I forgot,
    With Turbo engines tuning potential,
I dare not even imagine what Alois Ruf will prepare
    Fanch.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

    Oh man!!! This is exciting!!!
I've always loved the Boxster, I loved mine.
More nimble than the C4C but less power of course,
    I can't wait
    ok I'll stop now,
    Fanch.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

WOW, that would be great, but I really don't believe this rumor, it would ruin Carrera sales.

    J.Seven

I agree with J. sadly, sniff

This would definitly mean the end of the 996 cab.
Although if you think about it, not sure, if PAG emphasises the fact that the 911 will be the GT and the Boxster the sports car, it could be ok.
Wonder what the price tag will be?
Christian, 320 hp with a turbo engine?
Why not put the 996 engine? It would save development costs, no?
Plus a high revving engine suits more the philosophy of the Boxster IMO but I'm not going to be picky.
Other thing, the C4C does 0 to 100 in 5.2 sec.
With the same power and 200 kgs kess, can we expect the futur Boxster to break the 5 secs barrier from 0 to 100? It makes sense no?
    Would be amazing..
    Fanch.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

    RC,
even rumors hearing it from you is exciting 'cause so far I would say %90 of your rumors have come to reality. I think this is a smart thing by Porsche, their Boxster sales has dropped big time. If this would be true I don't mind waiting a little longer for the Turbo version.
In fact Boxster is the only line that doesn't offer turbo and now it is about time.
    As to what fanch mentioned:
    In reply to:
    end of 911 cab.

I believe there are still people (including me) that would like to get the next Gen. 911 wide body ("S"). I'm sure with 997 or 998 Porsche will offer "S" for each line and even cabs would be more lucrative with "S" badge than the Boxster.

    They won't let 911 die

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

    Yes you're right Ron,
If the Boxster gets an upgrade, then the 911 should get it too so that PAG makes sure it is still the queen of the line up.
But still, if you forget the prestige of the 911 and the hairdresser image of the Boxster (which I disapprove, I had one ), the Boxster is a better balanced car IMO, more neutral handling.
    Fanch.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

    Christian,
    With the same power output,
Which would faster around a track, a 996 or a Boxster?
    Tough huh?
    Fanch.
I honestly don't know, not an expert enough.
Because the 911 has more traction (rear engine) but the Boxster is better balanced (mid engine)
    Fanch.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

I have a Boxster with the 996 engine and the car is a blast to drive. It seems faster at low revs than the 996, but from 4000rpm above is the same power feeling as the Carrera. Car is perfectly balanced with this engine, I believe it's even more balanced than with the 2.5 or 2.7 engine because you have lots of power to play with, and sometimes power can get you out of trouble. You have the rear end completly controled with the accelarator and steering. Some friends went to circuit with me and made a few laps, they all were bummed by this car handling and performance.

    J.Seven

On the left you can see my friends Carrera 2 Cabrio and yes mine is faster

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

Forget to post the pic, here it is.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

Keep trying J, I wann see your car
Send it by mail to RC, he'll sort it out for you.
    Who made the mods?
    Ruf, techart, etc?
So the Boxster gets it then?
Well, it is 200kgs lighter, so I suppose it would anyway.
    Fanch.
BTW: Does anyone know the price that Ruf asks for a BoxsterS (260hp) to Ruf 3600 conversion?

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

The Boxster Turbo with 320HP will have at least 320 ft/lbs of torque, so it would be faster than the heavier 996 with less torque...

Re: I agree with J. sadly, sniff

    In reply to:
Plus a high revving engine suits more the philosophy of the Boxster IMO but I'm not going to be picky.

I agree with you François, a NA engine would make the Boxster's sweet chassis better exploitable, but Porsche knows how to make a turbo engine with the power delivery similar to a bigger NA engine. With the added bonus of substantially higher torque!
200-150 kgs less, and higher torque, would mean that this little beast would smoke a 911 cab in a straight line.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

OK, I try to theorize on that a little bit.

I don't think that a Boxster Turbo would hurt 911 sales because of two three reasons:
    • same or higher price tag than a 996 C2 (if Porsche is clever) to attract certain customers who might not want (or need) a 996
    • turbo engine (not 996 normally aspirated engine) to avoid engine comparison/competition and to position the Boxster Turbo in a different "league"
    • Boxster Turbo around at the same weight of the 996 to avoid better performance

So if a Boxster Turbo delivers the same performance as a 996 C2 and it costs the same money, only certain people would choose the Boxster over the 996.

    Just a theory though...

Personally I think that a stronger Boxster will be reality sometimes in the future. Never wondered why the Boxster S got a mild 8 HP upgrade only with the facelift?
Porsche has to do something: the new SLK is around the corner (2004) and it is no secret that Mercedes plans a 380-395 HP engine for it. Porsche can't stand back.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

But the whole advantage of the Boxster over the Carrera is that it is a lot lighter! (appart from engine layout)
I refuse to believe that PAG would actually increase the weight to put it on Carrera level.
That would be a first in sports car history and a crime for the car.
    Marketing is a Bitc.....
    Fanch.
PS: you're right on the price though, it will be a lot more expensice. Just look at the price diff between a C2 and a turbo.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

Francois, they cannot afford to make it lighter. And if they use a turbo charged M96 engine, it surely would add some weight to it (turbo chargers, intercooler, etc.). Not to forget about the enforced chassis.

Yes, marketing is in fact a bitch...

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

I have gave the link to a file in my computer, but the pic, doesn't show in post. I'll try again.

As I said before, the Carrera 2 Cabrio is slower at low revs than my beauty.

    Re: Boxster Turbo...a reality?

Will the Boxster Turbo be a 986 model, or a 987?
I hope, Porsche will use a 996 Turbo based engine

    Here's your picture...

...you should avoid such long file names.

To RSR: please, we shouldn't become insane.
The 996 Turbo based engine is way too expensive. I heard rumors that Porsche is working hard on lowering production cost on the 996 Turbo engine for the next generation. I also heard a rumor that Porsche is fed up with ECU tuning and wants to install a new motronic generation which can't be altered as easy as now. To make altering even more difficult, the "phone-home" option will be installed too...the motronic communicates directly with Porsche/PCNA when connected to the dealer's diagnostic system (new upcoming PST 3). No chance for motronic mods anymore without Porsche knowing it. Bad times for cheap tuning.

    Re: Here's your picture...

Hey, you want a 600 hp 911 Turbo - I want a 420 hp Boxster. Nothing wrong with that.

So Porsche will use a turbocharged M96 engine. I hope this engine will be solid enough.

    Re: Here's your picture...

Why would Porsche be fed up of ECU tuning???
It's not made by them, and they are not responsible for any possible failure, plus they can always charge huge amounts of money for any tuning engine repair, or even sell some brand new engine, for tuning nutz that have their cars destroid by cheap tuning.

    J.Seven

    In reply to:

Do you really want me to answer that?
Porsche can't play the policeman every time they have to approve a major gearbox or engine repair. And they can force the dealer to play the policeman and check the customer's car for modifications. Or do you really expect customers who modified their car to go to the dealer/Porsche and say: "hi, I just modified my ECU during warranty period, no...you don't have to pay for repairs?". You can't be serious, J.

A 996 Turbo gearbox costs around 11000 EUR. A 996 Turbo engine costs around 40000 EUR and more. Now do you really need more explenation?
