As much as I understand people feeling bad about being passed by a family wagon this could've happened in the past also. Remember the W116 (?) S-class with 6.3 or 6.9 litre (in AMG variant) V8 engine, which was faster than about any other car on the Autobahn except for some very fast cars.
What about the Ferraris, Porsches etc. in the 80ies with slightly beyond 200hp which could've been beaten by any 500 or 560 SE back then, and any souped-up Golf by now!

I'd say straight line performance is one factor, but not the only one. I heavily doubt that an E55 with four passengers would be significantly faster than a 997S with one or two passengers, at least up to 200 kph.

We have discussed this several times and I agree to demand at least 380hp in this car in std. form. Even if it is on par with the 996 GT3 in terms of power, that cars lower weight and race-biased suspension and equipment should give customers the choice which one suits for them!

Regarding the 500hp-button on the M5 I'd say it makes a lot of sense, in terms of dynamics, passenger friendliness, reliablity, gas mileage and a certain social compatibility.
It still is quite funny that 400hp seems to be fine for daily use...

I also understand the "Sport"-button on the 997, but I'd say the watch looks awful in the car - it seems to look quite decent in the 987 Boxster though, judging from the pictures!

Re: New BMW M5 500hp gimmick

2 houres ago I was in a BMW Garage, big dealer in Zurich (Switzerland) and I asked some questions about the new M5.

They told me, that the power button should be for city-cruise, and that it's more economic and saves fuel. But a mechanic told me, that it's because of giving the car to the wife or the son. But I laughed about it, because also 400 hp ist too much for insensate son.
After all, It was definitely not the truth, but that's what BMW-Dealers tell their customers.

Further I asked about switching on an off, and if it's possible to let the power switch on, also if I turn off the engine and take away the key.
They told me things like, you can program the key with 507 hp or you can change it and program it on the car cpu-unit.

After all, I have to say, that there are perhaps some truths on it but in my opinion BMW does it, because this v10 engine is not reliable enough to work all the time with 507 hp....(already too much problems with the m3)

Re: New BMW M5 500hp gimmick

honestly, there has to be another reason for the on/off switch other than simple economics, they could have programmed that into one of the SMG shift patterns.

must be just like their V10 F1 engines

    KABOOM!

Re: New BMW M5 500hp gimmick

The engine in my 2002 M3 blew up at 13,000 miles. That car managed to annoy me every day--you had to press a button to agree to a legal disclaimer on the navagation screen, you had to press the sport button every time you got in the car because it would default to normal, the audio volume would increase with speed, but would get too loud! I'm not suprised they have a horsepower button just to be annoying.

Its the natural evolution of iDrive

Well, I think you would have been able to influence the gradient of the speed-dependant volume increase of the radio, if you had read the manual.

If BMW cannot get the message across to the dealers, what are the chances they will get the information to the customers?
