The SL55 in the AMS Nardo comparo was able to make it to 320 kph / 200 mph though a decent amount of extra hp was rumoured. The E-class, given their bigger frontal area and definately not more hp won't get beyond that. Hey, not even the SLR makes it to about 330 kph only!

Ferdie, I calculated the gear ratios and tyre size and then was able to make such an assumption. The SL55 at Nardo had 617bhp or 626PS. It was carrying the prototype SLR engine in it. The gearing of the SL55 only allows it to do 202mph. Also the E55 has a more smaller frontal area, longer gearing (rear axle ratio of 2.65 vs 2.82 of SL55) and has a better drag coefficient. From this, and due to the powerful engine, which IS rated at 500bhp 
The E55 can do 206-208mph. I can show you the website I used if you like.

To my knowledge (based on what two AMG employees told me at the factory in Affalterbach), the E55AMG can reach a top speed of 330-335 kph if completely delimited.
But they also told me that the 300 kph speed limiter allows PRECISELY 300 kph only. So I suppose that the 308 kph on the speedo are true 300 kph "only". It is not the same speed limiter used with other cars (for example Audi), it really limits the speed at 300 kph and doesn't allow more due to safety reasons (tires, stability, etc.).
But still pretty impressive for a limousine.
Generally, AMG offers a 300 kph limit for all supercharged models (with the exception of the CLK DTM, SLR and SLK32/C32) and 280 kph for the non-supercharged models like CLK55/SLK55/C55 incl. SLK32/C32.
I remember that my E55 AMG once did 311 kph on the speedo, this was the max. speed which are was able to achieve. "True" 300 kph.
