Tracking

Am taking my 996 TT for its first track day outing in a couple of weeks at the Dubai autodrome. Can't wait, of course, but would like any info from you guys as to what I should do to prepare the car.

Also, any recommendations in terms of helmet/gloves?

Try different types of helmets open/closed from different manufactureres. They are all slightly different, and you will find the most comfortable one that suits your head. Personally, I like wearing open faced helmets when driving GT cars.

Thanks. I am definitely going for an open-faced helmet. Any manufacturers that are particularly recommended?

As for the helmet, Stand21 (www.stand21.fr) has an open-face one that can even be adapted to their HANS-system later if needed. I personnally prefer full-face helmets.

About your car, make sure your brakes are ok (discs, pads, fluid), and check your engine-oil (take some with you). For better braking performance, you might want to switch to a race-type fluid like Castrol SRF and/or to better pads like Pagid RS-19 (yellow). These are not the only options, but it's been my setup for 2.5 years, and I'm pretty happy with it.

Oh!... How could I forgot that: make sure your tires are going to survive the day! Again, you might want to switch to semi-slicks (like Pirelli PZero Corsa), but if it's your first track-day, I don't think this would be a good idea.

And... take it easy... but take it!

I can recommend the Arai GP-Jet as an open-faced helmet. It is more compact than most other manufacturers and very comfortable to wear. I think Arai helmets are overall very good, also the full-face versions.

I recommend full face. Safety is important. Also, start with cold tire pressures of 30-32 psi. Do not let your hot tire temps above 40 psi. Watch your brakes as if you drive hard, you may have trouble keeping them cool.
