    Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

Christmas isn't too far away, and this should be on every Porsche enthusiasts x-mas list
Check out the rotor system design, is that cool or what:

    PD Aluminium Titan Chronograph

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

What about the Indicator?... At EUR 65'000, it's a real bargain too!... (50 units per year, much less than CGTs!)

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

i think buying a porsche / ferrari / etc branded watch/other merchandise is cheesy.

    especially watches.

if you want a proper chronograph to wear in your car there are only a few brands that are acceptable sartorially.

    rolex daytona (cliched but defacto).
    brietling
    tag
and i believe patek makes a chrono as well ($$$)

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

    Moogle, don't get me started

I obviously disagree with you when you say that brand watches are cheesy. There are several watch companies that have a long relationship with the car industry and therefore have credebility, like Girard-Perregaux (Ferrari), Porsche Design and perhaps the "ultimate" car watch - the Mille Miglia from Chopard.

Unlike companies that sponsor car manufacturers (Tag Heuer - McLaren) or drivers (Omega - Michael Schumacher) to get "cred"

When it comes to chronographs to wear in your car, I do agree on the Daytona, it's a true classic and a very good watch, especially with the new Rolex 4130 movement.

But I'm "insulted" that you mention Tag, they are not a proper watch company, or manufacture if you will IMO, they just buy parts from suppliers like ETA movements and stick a Tag Heuer label on the finished product. Breitling is a borderline case since they at least have some movements especially made for them by others in their watches

My favourite watch brand is the German A. Lange & Söhne. And their Datograph chronograph is a masterpiece.

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

    A. Lange & Söhne Datograph

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

    The last one is beautiful!!!

i really don't want to start an argument here, and i apologize if my tone in my first post came off as such

i was just expressing something that i've always felt about the 'porsche design' products.

i always saw them as leeches off the porsche name and somehow their products never seemed to be infused with the emotion and heritage of the road cars bearing the same name.

i always looked at that company as just a mediocre design house that created everything from coffee makers to lamps, how could they compare to specialist watchmakers?

    Best,
    Tommy

PS. i mentioned tag mabye only for their Monaco watches, the rest are rather forgettable as you said , i was given a tag Link (you know the one featured in tiger woods ads everywhere), and its a very mediocre chrono. but, have you seen the new belt driven monaco concept, which should be produced very soon? its absolutely ingenious and truely a landmark in 'sport' watchmaking.

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

If you think you need better accuracy than the a $10 Timex for general timekeeping, you've been swayed. Plus, most cellphones take Stratum 1 or 2 timing from the most accurate sources, otherwise all TDM signaling would break and the world's communication networks would get really pissed. So who needs a watch when you have accurate time on your cellphone already?

Watches are pieces of jewelry which people buy for looks, prestige, or generally to own a nice piece of engineering. I bought mine for a combination of all three, so I am guilty as well.

At least with a Porsche, you get some physical measurable value out of your investment.

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

    its all about bragging rights

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

Temm, Do you know how much (US$) does the new PD alum watch cost?

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

First of all almost every watch manufacturer produces a Chronograph model..

Watches are, as mentioned above, juwelery and about the only thing men should wear without looking cheesy - of course there are exceptions!

Porsche Design watches are mainly about the design and, as stated above, this is quite an important factor on a watch. If you want a handbuilt Chronograph then forget about those.

One I appreciate are tonneau-shaped watches from F. Muller in Switzerland, though I do believe they don't fit my style and age right now...

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

Temm, have you visited the Lange&Söhne factory?

What do you think about Glashütte?

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

Ferdie, don't forget about cuff links and (tasteful) rings.

other than that, i agree, jewelery for men is highly limited.

anyways, watches are getting insane with complications, have you seen the new wave of double tourbillon watches? - soooo nice

Pierre, the Indicator looks pretty awesome! But for EUR 65.000, I'd rather buy a 997 Carrera S, but that's just me

Yes isn't it? And the inner workings are very impressive as well. It is regarded as one of the best chronographs on the marked.

    No offense taken

You have a point, but Porsche Design have never built any watches themselves. Instead they have cooperated with some pretty impressive partners, first it was IWC, and now they have bought Eterna. (The Eterna factory is owned by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche)

Hmmm, I forgot about the Monaco, they do have that. But it only became famous because Steve McQueen wore it in a movie if I remember correctly.

I'm glad we agree on that

Yes it features the Valjoux 7750 movement like 90% of every other chronograph on the market (including my Omega Seamaster) and it has a average case and bracelet not worth the asking price.

Indeed, it looks very cool and impressive. If they keep coming up with new and original watches like the belt driven concept instead of just using the old Heuer brand to make money, Tag will be off my sh** list soon

I have unfortunately not been to Glashütte yet, but I plan to go there some day.

I think all the watches that come out of Glashütte are among the best in the world, and can hold their own against any of the more famous swiss brands. And I think it is great to see these two former giants (Lange and Glashütte) rise again and prosper. And they seem to enjoy a healthy rivalry at the moment to best the best watchmaker in Glasshütte.

Unfortunately the only watches from Glashütte I can afford are Nomos watches, but I do own one

The most beautiful watch in thew world IMO, is the Langematik Perpetual Calender, but it is also one of the most expensive

Well if you look under "hobbies" in my profile, that should give you a clue

The pride and joy in my "collection" is an original Heuer stopwatch (before Tag bought the Heuer brand) with splitsecond function that I inherited from my grandfather.
So I'm not going to need the Sport Chrono in my future 997

As you can see Heuer has a long history and connection with cars and racing:

1933 - Heuer launches the "Autavia" the first dashboard stopwatch for race-cars.

1964 - Heuer launches the "Carrera" chronograph. This watch was named for the 1950's "Carrera Pan-america Mexico" road-race.

1969 - Heuer introduces the "Chronomatic", the first automatic chronograch with a microrotor. They also introduce the widely popular "Monaco" worn by movie-star Steve McQueen.

1971 to 1979 - Heuer is named the official timekeeper for formula one racing.

Moogle: As you can see the Monaco watch came when Heuer was still Heuer and not Tag Heuer.

    Then the sad part:

1985 - Heuer joins "TAG" group and the famous watch name and logo are changed from HEUER to TAG-HEUER.

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

My next watch is probably going to be the new Eterna KonTiki Four Hands. The original KonTiki watch was made famous by Norwegian explorer and ethnologist Thor Heyerdahl when he wore one on his 7.000 km trip across the pacific on a balsawood raft in the KonTiki expedition in 1947.
This expedition also helped make Eterna a world renowned brand.

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

    I feel so poor lol

Re: Porsche Design Aluminium Titan Chronograph

Well, I guess once a year we can accept a "watch" thread.

I think I mentioned it before but most Porsche drivers I know or met surprisingly wear a Rolex, many of them the Daytona in steel, gold or even platin.
I don't tell you guys what watch I wear but only one hint: it has to do with motorsports, it is expensive and I would never buy another watch anymore, as tempted as I might be from time to time. I wear my "dream" watch and it doesn't make ANY sense to exchange it with another one.
I know that a lot of people collect luxury watches but with two kids, I'm happy I was able to afford the one I wear now.
Yes, you guessed right: when I bought it, no kids.
