    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

I think this is cultural or at least a matter of education. In the US or Middle East, objects need to look expensive to communicate their value to the outside world ("showing off"). In Switzerland at least, this is often seen as vulgar and a proof a very bad taste.

I agree but most of the time, it is a matter of envy.

We have some friends, the wife comes from a family of doctors but her grandparents were simple people. When my wife showed off (she just wore it... yes) her new Rolex, that wife told her that only "Neureiche" (newly rich) are wearing such expensive watches. Of course she also mentioned my 911 Cab in the process... yes My wife felt a little bit offended, especially since these "friends" (they are definitely more wealthy than us, the husband has a small factory for office supplies but drives an Audi A6 station wagon, she drives a Mini Countryman) know us for a long time.

My grandparents and grand grand parents were filthy rich, they had wineries and a champagne factory in the 19s in Austria, my uncle in Brazil was basically the furniture king for many years and my parents also were pretty successful, so the comments kind of hurt.

Do I like to show off? No, not because I see it as vulgar or proof of bad taste but because I hate to see people stare at me, to ask me how much or what I do for a living (which happened often in the past...). I love the good things in life though, nice things and this doesn't necessarily mean that everything has to be expensive. Yes, I wear a 35k EUR watch but at the same time, my whole outfit I dress in is probably 400 bucks worth only. My "style" is for me, not for others, I do not care. Same goes to my cars, I drive them for me, not for others.

Yes, I see a lot of bling bling in Miami (or even in Munich sometimes...) but I never cared about it (unless it is a gold foiled Ferrari...a bit too much ).

I always wonder why some people care so much about others and not necessarily in a positive sense? yes

Sorry but this is one of the reasons I do not like living in Germany (or Europe for that matter). People are way too focused on "others" when they should be more focused on themselves. Smiley

As long as nobody here takes delivery of a 911 R, there is nothing much to talk about. Then, we are going to have a new thread (ownership) anyway. Smiley

The 911R. History will remember this car for a very different reason.

Many many many Porsche customers are upset because of it cause they couldn't get their hands on one.

Many many 918 owners are upset because Porsche pass them over.

Many 918 owners are upset because they don't have a big enough dick to get PTS.

Many 918 owners are upset because their dick is not even big enough to get semi-PTS colors like black, yellow, orange.

It is a car that upset the whole Porsche community.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Porsche has made a huge mistake by restricting the production of the R, first because they upset a lot of people like Nick said, but also because they insisted on the car being unique and manual. With PDK and rear seats this car could be the best selling 911 model. Maybe they will learn something for this debacle.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

There are so many letters of angry Porsche owners Porsche AG received. Even people having bought 30 cars didn´t get one. In Germany I know only two dealers who has got more then one car. Stuttgart (owned bei PAG) and Karlsruhe. Both because they have 918 customers who wanted the car.

And then we have our friend boytronic who got an allocation and turned it down.I mention this not to have a go at him but to emphasise the kack handed way this allocation process has been handled.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Porsche's 2015 production number is 225,121 vehicles. There are maximum 918 angry 918 owners who could not get an R. That is whopping 0.41% upset people. Porsche must be devastated by their decision to restrict the R.

Yes. Reading all the posts I should have been greedy and taken it! I would have chosen GT Silver, no stripes and high spec with Cocoa leather. I would have kept it for at least 10 years, driven all over Europe in it every year, and enjoyed every single mile! :)

...AND I would have shared all the memories with you great guys :)

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

well, from a cash perspective, this comparison may look different if we considered that every 918 owner paid at least something like EUR 750.000 min for the car, which is something like 3 turbos or 10 boxsters or so... ?

Still, and again, I do not like this policy as well, as it jeopardizes the perception of a (base or unlimited) 911 as such - Porsche really needs to be careful here, unless the want the Porsche family to separate into two categories - the  drivers of limited and unlimited Porsche models.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Don't worry, Porsche will make more great cars like this in the future. They don't need to be limited edition, they just need to be special and fun for us to drive :)

On the flip side, from Porsche's point of view:

They are testing the manual transmission for performance usage, it's much easier to control the fallout with only 991 customers, most of whom are VIPs who don't care if a car is out of commission for weeks as they have other special Porsches to drive. Imagine if its' a regular production car and someone bought an R as a primary car and then the transmission broken down. That person will be extremely angry with Porsche. They learnt first hand with the GT3 engine  blow back.

In the end, A LOT OF people who wanted the R want it for the wrong reason. They saw the limited car supply and saw a chance to drive something that will appreciate, thus the feeding frenzy. Porsche, in their secretive way, didn't proper disclose their future road map, which includes bringing manual transmission back for at least the GT3, that news could have lessen the feeding frenzy to a certain extend.

Their poor choice of standard colours is another thing that upset people. Then the mysterious PTS process rears its ugly head doesn't help either.

For this car, Porsche has and will receive a lot of negative feedback from not just 918 owners, but also longtime customers too, and they will listen, to a certain extend.

Probably not all 918 owners wanted an R anyway, right?

Thinking that limiting the R was a huge mistake is irrelevant to Porsche. That is point of the above numbers.

But it is encouraging to see that after the, most likely, surprising success of the manual GT4 then Porsche coincidentally "dusted off" the manual GT3 prototype, added a few RS bits and bobs and made it a production car.

This I find hard to believe. Porsche has built GT3s for more than 10 years with manual transmission. Now they have to build a "special edition" to test the manual transmission with VIP customers? Smiley

The old manual was a 6 speed unit and wasn't mated to the current DFI engine remember?

The new manual was based on the current production 7 speed manual, but they modified it to be 6 speed with different gearing.

Yes, but surely they can test this themselves. That is what I meant, even if it is a "new" gearbox, Porsche has got decades of experience testing manual gearboxes.
