    New Model

    Re: New Model

Well, this new $50k model will embarass all of their other models that cost under $100k wrt lap times (until the brakes and/or tranny overheat)

Can't wait to hear the first track report on the new C6 Z06, maybe those issues will be over and done with.

Speaking of tracks, they have been testing the new C6-R for GTS class entry at Sebring next year. Now if Porsche could only compete in the same class.

One can hope they do have a prototype entry within the next several years.

I think even the $45k C6 Z51 will have solved these issues (oil, tranny, and power steering coolers included in the $1,500 suspension package along with lower gear ratios). Larger cross-drilled brakes are included too (quite a package for $1,500).

The new Z06 will be a 500HP+ monster that will have a dry sump motor and will lap a racetrack faster than any Porsche excepting MAYBE the GT2 and certainly the CGT.

    leafsprings.

Leafsprings that will run circles around most Porsches

BTW, we don't yet know what type of suspension the C6 Z06 will have (could be coilovers)...

Agreed. However, the "leafsprings" comment was hilarious on the Fifth Gear review.

    Re: New Model

Admittedly they are awesome machines for the price. But I'm not entirely convinced at this point. 380 hp GT3s are faster in a straight line than the 400 hp C6 and the 405 hp Z06. In an article by Sports Car international, the GT3 was lapping Infineon raceway I think 3 seconds faster than a Z06 and the next GT3 should be significantly faster than the mk. II. I wouldn't be surprised if the 997 GT3 was a tick faster than the C6 Z06, which I would consider an accomplishment for a car with less than 4 liters under the rear decklid compared to the 6 or maybe 7 liters on the next Z06. Still, only 50 grand... or what? 70? for the next Z06 ( I hear they will be more expensive)

    Re: New Model

Top Gear rips it apart, but quietly rank it faster than both the Lotus Exige and the 911 GT3 and just two tenths of a second off the Gallardo.

The "leafsprings" you guys speak of, and which Top Gear trashes are nothing like the leaf springs on your Grandfather's pickup. They are transverse leafsprings. The suspension technology is so far advanced from what you would typically consider leaf springs that they can outperform a lot of standard "modern" rear suspension technologies.

Yes, I am not convinced either, but these things are fast. At the track where I drive, the Z06's turn quicker laps than GT3's. I expect the new C6 Z51's (for $45k before big GM rebates) will be about the same. Of course, laptimes aren't everything, it's the fun and connection to the car. I do think the C6 Z06 will be faster than a 997GT3 at the track. Would I rather own one than the 997GT3? No, unless the 997GT3 has a wet sump motor, but I'm just defending the Vette's performance at the track (about the same as a GT3 Cup car as far as I've witnessed).

    Re: New Model

Sorry, but I'm still not convinced with the leafspring technology.

I'd say the Z06 should be about as fast as a GT3, depending on the track of course. I'd say it is quite an achievement to make the car as quick in terms of handling, but I actually recall a comparison test on R&T back in the 80ies where the 911 Carrera Clubsport was tested against the C4 Corvette with Zxx (?) package. The Vette was faster or equally fast as the Porsche on the track. One thing we should consider is that all tests I have seen so far were done on fairly flat racetracks. I am not too sure how it would perform on uneven surfaces.

Regarding numbers the new C6 is not any faster than the 997S in acceleration - including 0-200 kph and 1/4-mile - not even mentioning braking performance! Remember that the Carrera performed comparably bad on the AMS test!

One thing I absolutely mind about Chevrolet is their "if we are too dumb to offer the right appealing product, we just lower the price"-attitude! Performance and price tag aside, there is not too much to attract me - and obviously many others - on that car! I also wonder, if GM put a lot of manpower into Cadillac and Corvette development to receive a better image and make people believe that their Belair is a great car because of the Chevrolet badge...
By the way, the Corvette is not presented under Chevy label in Europe - on the other side several Korean Daewoo models will be renamed to Chevrolet vehicles beginning of next year.

    Greetings!

Ferdie - The $45k C6 laps the Nurburgring in the same time as a GT3 (nobody's idea of a flat track )

As fast as the cup car? That is pretty sad for Porsche then, since the cup car is so much lighter and is well, a race car. Are the vettes stock??

Roll cage, track brake pads and DOT track tires (driven by a former pro racer) - still street legal - no lightening.

    Re: New Model

The Z06 is a battle cruiser.

The Boxster S is a ballerina.

The 993 Turbo is a surgical instrument.

    My next addition will be a 997 GT3. I can't wait...

I would have been inclined to liken the GT3 to a surgical instrument, based on the 996 iterations, but that left me puzzling what to liken a 993 Turbo to.

I guess a 996 Turbo could be a Stradivarius violin.

    Re: New Model

Fritz, you came up with the best analogy. It covers all bases...

I believe you, but I'm starting to believe that there isn't a real definitive answer on the stock for stock issue because everyone does something to their cars, whether it be tires or mild suspension mods. I mean I've heard of cup cars beating Z06s in Speedvision races and those Z06s certainly aren't stock. I also know someone with a 72 911 that is still street legal, isn't super light weight since it has a full leather interior and AC, yet he hasn't met a Z06 that he has left in the dust at the track. He races on the west coast so maybe their are a lot faster Z06s and Z06 drivers to the East.
