    Cayenne Turbo, Powerkit and more

I have some new rumors on the Cayenne Turbo:

    • the top speed of 266 kph is a more theoretical top speed, most Cayenne Turbos exceed 270-275 kph (real speed, not speedo reading!)
    • a 480 HP powerkit might be available for the Cayenne Turbo around 2004, making the Cayenne Turbo faster than a Porsche 993.
    • a electronic tuning for the air suspension system incl. stronger swaybars might be available around 2004 (not available with the Advanced Tech Off-Road Package)
    • wider wheel/tire option (295/30 9,5x20) around 2004

    Again...rumors.

    Now I hope I won't be "killed".

Re: Cayenne Turbo, Powerkit and more

You know what guys after looking at the picture that RC posted and reading about the future options on the Cayenne, it is kind of sinking for me that perhaps Porsche meant business by Cayenne and perhaps it is true that only some parts are common between Porsche and the VW counterpart.

I don't believe that the VW Tourag can do this kind of off roading.

Re: Cayenne Turbo, Powerkit and more

Ron, unfortunately the Cayenne and the Touareg share all suspension parts (especially the air suspension) and all drivetrain parts. Only the engines, the style elements (like front/rear lights and some body parts) and the interior design (technically it is the same) are different.
Or to use an old comparison: the Cayenne and the Touareg have more in common than the Boxster and the 996 back in 1998.

Re: Cayenne Turbo, Powerkit and more

Let's not get too excited about this until we see what VW is doing on price. I'm thinking they want to move upscale and will price their comparable Tourareg not too far from the Cayenne. The Cayenne loses it's exclusivity, to some extent, but, I don't think we will be left thinking a similar VW can be had for a lot less money. The pricing estimates I have seen on the V-10 are pretty high.

    VW Touareg

Well, the off-road performance of the Touareg should be the same as on the Cayenne. And yes, you're right...the Touareg is no bargain. The main difference between the Touareg and the Cayenne are the engines. A V6 and a Diesel are available on the Touareg only and both engines have a completely different target customer than the Cayenne engines.
I still think that Porsche makes a big mistake not to offer a Diesel engine at least in Europe. But I guess Porsche targets especially the US market where the Cayenne S with 340 HP will be the bestseller.

But we shouldn't forget one thing: Mercedes and BMW aren't sleeping and I also think that US manufacturers will soon discover how to build high quality SUVs because they have the knowledge and the technology...just the will was missing.
I really don't understand why US SUV manufacturers were so stupid not to learn where the market is moving to. A small reminder: BMW, Porsche and even Mercedes didn't have a clue how to build a SUV 10 years ago when the first SUVs showed up in the US. I remember how much I liked the Grand Cherokee by it's time...a nice V8 in a SUV. European car manufacturers learned fast and it is a pitty that there is no 500 HP SUV monster from GMC for example to cope with Cayenne and Co.
The Lincoln Navigator I drove this spring in Florida was a nice SUV but not even close (quality impression and drive feel) to my ML55. And it is my understanding that the Navigator is considered to be a luxury SUV. It is a pitty that US manufacturers gave away their ace card...the SUV. They could have "flooded" even European markets by now.

BTW: latest rumors indicate that the mentioned powerkit will have at least 500 HP and not the stated 480 HP. Sounds good to me.

    Re: VW Touareg

I think Porsche should never have a diesel engine in any of its cars. The Cayenne is a niche product and has to stay like this.

The Touareg on the other hand is more of a mass product (at least the perception). In Europe, I'm sure the diesel version will outsell the petrol one by a ratio of 3 to 1. In the US it's a different story, Americans don't like and don't know diesel engines. They remember the old underpowered smoky diesel cars at the end of the seventies. In the US it's not always easy to find diesel.... you've got to go with the trucks (18 wheelers !!!!). I'm not even sure VW will import a diesel version of the Touareg....

Regarding American assemblers missing the boat in luxury/sporty SUVs.
I think the problem is they have not a clue how to make decent cars!!!! They are lacking technology. For example Ford this year was very proud to announce the Explorer has 4 independant wheels. Scary Harry !!!! Also Ford and Chrysler can't implement ESPs on their cars and SUVs because their engines are outdated.
American assemblers only know how to built cheap products that aren't made to last. At 50,000 miles American cars are falling apart and are ready to join the junk yard. A good example is the extremely poor resale value of American cars (across the range from Luxury to Economy). In the US, Luxury means oversized vehicles loaded with goodies. American drivers are more concerned about cup-holders than security or road handling.
For them a SUV is just a status symbol, 80% of them are 2WD... They want a big car, so in case of an accident, they'll be safe. What they forget, is these SUV's are so badly designed that in some instances 40% (it's not a typo) of the time, the SUV will end up making a rollover which can be very dangerous !!!

The story about the cup-holder is true. I read many comments in Road & Track where readers were outraged that the 996 (early models) wasn't equipped with one. A guy was saying, I will never buy a 911 because of that. I think it's a great idea he shouldn't by a Porsche, he doesn't have the spirit. he should by a "nice" 'Vette.... or a Pontiac...

American assemblers aren't really in a hurry to sell more reliable, better quality SUVs. SUVs are considered as TRUCKS and therefore don't have to follow the rule that the average gas mileage of the range should improve over time. This agreement was signed with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) awhile ago when SUVs were not a large segment of the market. The original ones were based on trucks chassis. So nowadays, assemblers if they were to make technologicaly advanced products are affraid their products will be reclassified as cars and therefore would ruin the trend. American SUVs are real gas guzzlers....

    SUV engineering

Eric--While you make some good points, I think you overstated them and got off track making sweeping statements about Americans and their products. You are in FL, I have lived there, and yes most of the SUVs there are not 4WD because it is flat and there is no snow. However, in most of the country the majority of the SUVs are 4WD.

As RC stated, Jeep (and Land Rover) owned the SUV market for many years. The great engineering of a Land Rover Disco almost got me in several accidents because it wouldn't come to a complete stop on downhill icy roads due to the way the ABS was set up. I never had that problem with any other SUVs. If you don't believe there is talent at work in the US, come to the next SEMA show in Las Vegas. You will see hundreds of US and many foreign companies with very good technical products for the automotive market.

Another example is the new MINI. The aftermarket products are coming from one company in the UK, several in Germany and about half a dozen in the USA.

You are stating well known history about gas mileage. If we want big engine power, even in smaller cars, then we won't be getting good mileage, it has nothing to do with where the vehicle is built.

Its odd that you think the American cars are done at 50,000 miles. Those slow reving V-8 and V-6 engines that you call outdated have a reputation for lasting 100,000 miles easily without major attention. The throw-away brands were Renault, Subaru, and Yugo in the past; some are improved now. I think it would be better to say that quality is down across the board- check the posts on the BMW, Mercedes, MINI boards. Everyone is lamenting the lower quality of the newer cars. Americans build some fine cars, the Chrysler 300M, Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Thunderbird, Ford Mustang, Mercury Marauder, Panoz Esperante and Shelby Series I; and don't forget a number of Japanese and German models are built or assembled in American factories.
