Porsche 917 concept: fresh pictures of the revised racer...

    1557008287426image.jpeg

Porsche has revealed more pictures of its 917 concept racer. Finished in the red and white livery of the 917KH Coupe and first Le Mans winner, the new design study marks 50 years of the 917; the original was shown at the 1969 Geneva motor show.

Stuttgart plans to celebrate the original car – which won a total of 19 gold medals at the famous Le Mans 24 Hours – wtth a special exhibition in the Porsche Museum this year, and we’re told it’ll include 10 original 917s as well as this concept study. The exhibition will run from 14 May to 15 September 2019.

According to Porsche, the concept was actually made before the brand's entry into LMP1 – something it’s since pulled out of – but is now finally being shown to the public.

Like most of these projects, it was the work of a small team of engineers within the company.

Volkswagen ID R smashes electric Nurburgring record...

    Volkswagen ID R

    (3 June 2019)

The 671bph Volkswagen ID R has smashed the electric lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, with Romain Dumas lapping the 12.9-mile circuit in 6 min 05.336 secs.

The time around the 156-corner circuit eclipsed the previous 6min 45.90secs mark for an electric car, set by the 1341bhp, four-motor Nio EP9 in 2017. While that was a officially production-based machine, the ID R is a one-off purely for competition.

Dumas, who also drove the ID R on Pikes Peak, completed five laps of the circuit, setting the new electric record on his final lap of the day. "It was very exciting," said Dumas. "We worked hard on the car after each run, and improved the balance on each lap. I was getting quicker every time, and with each lap you had to adapt your style. During the lap you have to keep your confidence so you can keep pushing even more.

“Pikes Peak was one of the biggest achievements of my career, and what is impressive is how we improved the car in one year. One year ago in Pikes Peak everyone was surprised by the time we achieved, but now we’re playing with the limiter, and the engineers are working harder and harder to get to that limit.”

The electric Nurburgring mark is the latest record set by the ID R, which last year set a new outright hill record on the 12.42-mile Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course. It followed up with an electric hill record at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

To break the Nordschleife record, the ID R was heavily modified from how it ran at Pikes Peak. With that event taking place on a hairpin-laden course at high altitude, the car was designed for maximum downforce and acceleration, with a relatively low top speed.

While a similar length, the Nurburgring offers a vastly different challenge, with long straights and fast corners. VW maintained the same twin motor and battery set-up as it did on Pikes Peak, but altered the energy management system to help the car reach its top speed faster.

also introduced an F1-inspired aerodynamic package featuring a new rear wing, new front splitter and a drag reduction system that can reduce downforce by up to 20%.

Remarkably, the ID R’s time was nearly six seconds quicker than the long-time lap record of 6min 11.13secs set by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 in 1983. That mark stood for 35 years until being eclipsed last year Timo Bernhard in the Porsche 919 Evo. That machine, which lapped the track in 5min 19.45secs, was a heavily modified Le Mans prototype consisting of a 2.0-litre V4 hybrid powertrain tuned to produce 710bhp, with an additional 433bhp coming from an electric motor. It also featured heavily reworked aerodynamics.

Gordon Murray Automotive reveals details for its new ‘T.50’: the purest, lightest, most driver-focused supercar ever

    • Designed to the same exacting engineering standards as the driver-focused McLaren F1; improves upon its iconic predecessor in every way
    • Mid-engine and rear-wheel-drive layout; famed central driving position and
    • H-pattern gearbox all key to a matchless experience behind the wheel
    • All-new V12 to be the highest-revving engine ever used in a production car; produces unrivalled power-to-weight
    • ‘Fan car’ technology delivers the most advanced aerodynamics yet seen on a road car
    • Unique carbon fibre tub and a focus on minimising the weight of every component underpin ‘lightweighting’ strategy – overall weight is just 980kg
    • New model will set new standards for supercar packaging, providing driver and two passengers with exceptional comfort, safety, practicality and luggage space
    • Only 100 exclusive models to be produced costing in excess of £2m (before taxes); deliveries from early 2022.

Gordon Murray Automotive, sister-business of visionary vehicle design and engineering company Gordon Murray Design, has announced details of its first vehicle – the T.50 supercar. Conceived as the spiritual successor to the Murray-devised McLaren F1, the T.50 will be the purest, lightest, most driver-focused supercar ever built.

The development of T.50 is at an advanced stage, with full production and customer deliveries set to commence in early 2022. Just 100 owners of the T.50 will experience Murray’s vision – a supercar inspired by his 50 years at the pinnacle of Formula One and automotive industry engineering and design.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE, Chairman of Gordon Murray Group, said:“An unflinching dedication to lightweighting, highly-advanced active aerodynamics and world-leading standards of advanced engineering will ensure the T.50 rewrites the supercar rulebook. Our experienced team is applying the same uncompromising approach to design and engineering that shaped every facet of the F1, and they are able to deliver substantial improvements over that car in every meaningful way.”

The engineering planning, plus all interior and exterior styling of the new vehicle has been carried out by Gordon Murray Design. It will be manufactured in the UK by Gordon Murray Automotive – a new company first announced in late 2017 at the One Formula exhibition. The event celebrated 50 years of Murray’s career in motorsport and automotive design and engineering, plus it previewed plans to build a limited-run supercar – the T.50. Every race or road car penned by Murray so far has featured a ‘T’ designation; and the T.50 will be the 50th in a highly illustrious line.

The T.50 breaks from performance-car convention, just as the F1 did in 1992. It weighs significantly less than any other current supercar. It has the most advanced aerodynamics of any road car, and it relies on design and engineering excellence to deliver the purest, most driver-focused performance and dynamics of any road car since the F1.

It will be powered by a compact and light, naturally-aspirated, all-new V12 engine. The unit will be capable of an extraordinary 12,100rpm – unparalleled in a V12 road car – and 650hp to deliver unmatched power-to-weight. However, Murray says: “I have absolutely no interest in chasing records for top speed or acceleration. Our focus is instead on delivering the purest, most rewarding driving experience of any supercar ever built – but, rest assured, it will be quick.”

The T.50 adopts the same, iconic three-seat format that Murray pioneered for the F1, with the driver benefitting from a central ‘jet-fighter-style’ driving position. The new car builds on the F1’s highly-advanced aerodynamics, taking Murray’s ground-effect innovations to an all-new level with intelligent management of underbody airflow coupled with a 400mm fan at the rear. The fan actively controls underbody airflow – a feature Murray famously premiered on the Brabham BT46B Formula One ‘Fan Car’. This approach allows the upper surfaces of the car to retain purity and beauty, eschewing the exaggerated scoops and spoilers familiar in the segment and equipping the T.50 with the most advanced aerodynamics of any road car

All engineering, design and styling of the T.50 is by Gordon Murray Design and the car will be manufactured by Gordon Murray Automotive at a new, purpose-built facility in Surrey, UK. Furthermore, all major components will be bespoke and UK-sourced, including the powertrain, body and chassis. This will be a true British supercar.

The T.50, by Gordon Murray Automotive will be priced in excess of £2 million before taxes.

    T.50 IN DETAIL

Setting new standards in lightweighting, the T.50 supercar weighs significantly less than any existing supercar

“Automotive enthusiasts and road-test editors have discussed the concept of ‘peak supercar’ for some time,” says Murray. “The reality of chasing top speeds only adds weight, notably through ever-more powerful engines, which increase the requirement for larger, heavier ancillaries. We are taking a very different approach.”

Ingrained in the approach of the Gordon Murray Automotive product development strategy is a fastidious commitment to minimise weight – inevery component. “This is the key to achieving enhanced performance and dynamics, and refocusing the supercar on the driver and the thrill of driving. We’re not interested in simply chasing numbers, and never will be,” asserts Murray.

Gordon Murray Automotive will produce the world’s lightest, most driver-focused supercar through sophisticated use of advanced carbon fibre engineering and this fanatical dedication to purging the vehicle of every unproductive gram.

The T.50 supercar will weigh just 980kg – around a third lighter than the average supercar – making it, by far, the lightest supercar ever.

With a clear driver-focus, the external proportions are highly compact (smaller than the footprint of a Porsche 911 at just 4,380mm long and 1,850mm wide) to optimise handling, while the interior is nonetheless spacious and comfortable for three, with ample dedicated space for luggage.

The most advanced aerodynamics of any road car

In rewriting the supercar rulebook, Gordon Murray Automotive set out to equip the T.50 supercar with the most advanced aerodynamics of any road car. The new model will feature intelligent under-body active aerodynamics, which employs continuous, dynamic and interactive underbody ground-effect systems to optimise the driving experience.

Uniquely, the supercar will feature a 400mm ground-effect fan, similar to that on Murray’s famous Brabham BT46B Formula One ‘Fan Car’. The Gordon Murray Automotive team has established a new technical partnership with a Formula One team, which will make its rolling-road wind tunnel available to develop the aerodynamics of the T.50.

With all of the car’s intelligent aerodynamic sophistication housed beneath the car, the upper surfaces are free from unsightly wings, outlets, vents and bulges, safeguarding the purity and beauty of the exterior design. The sense of drama, even when stationary, is amplified by the striking dihedral doors that hark back to the F1 – where they first appeared on a supercar.

An engineering work of art with bespoke powertrain and running gear

Through exquisite engineering, every part of the T.50 is refined to create the purest, most focused supercar ever made – “We expect this to be the last, and the greatest, ‘analogue’ supercar ever built,” says Murray.

The T.50 features a bespoke, mid-mounted, all-new V12 engine that has been designed, developed and built exclusively for Gordon Murray Automotive by Cosworth Powertrain.

The V12 3.9-litre ‘Cosworth Gordon Murray Automotive’ engine will rev to an unparalleled 12,100rpm and develops 650hp and 450Nm torque. Paired with the car’s extraordinary lightness (980kg), it achieves a power-to-weight of 663hp/ton exceeding that of any other naturally-aspirated sports car designed for the road.

The V12 Cosworth GMA engine delivers more power from four litres than the F1 produced with 6.1 litres in 1992, an achievement aided by the inclusion of roof-fed ram-air induction, which increases horsepower to around 700hp.

Cosworth Managing Director, Powertrain, Bruce Wood, said: “We are tremendously excited to be part of the T.50 supercar project, and to have the opportunity to work alongside Gordon Murray Automotive. It is a real privilege to play such a key role in the T.50 with an all-new V12 3.9-litre engine, designed, developed, manufactured and assembled by Cosworth’s industry-leading powertrain division.

“Developing an engine that delivers superlative performance, while meeting stringent emissions targets, is a challenge that demonstrates Cosworth’s unique capabilities. To be so intrinsically aligned with a supercar that puts engine performance, response and light weighting at the very heart of the driving experience is the ultimate accolade and underscores Cosworth’s reputation and capabilities as a leading OEM tier one powertrain partner.”

The Gordon Murray Automotive team was focused on producing the purest driving experience so rejected the use of turbos or electrified powertrain assistance, instead applying attention to engine response.

Murray adds: “By working with the team at Cosworth Powertrain we have created the greatest naturally-aspirated engine ever designed for the road. It is the highest revving, highest power density, lightest and fastest-responding naturally-aspirated V12 ever made for a road car.”

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a bespoke, lightweight six-speed transmission designed in conjunction with British transmission technology specialists Xtrac. In the furtherance of maximum driver reward and low weight, Murray has specified the T.50 with a newly-designed and developed ‘H-pattern’ six-speed gearbox – deliberately eschewing the twin-clutch solution favoured by many supercar makers. The brakes, also developed specially for the T.50, shed speed through a combination of lightweight monobloc alloy calipers and new technology carbon-ceramic discs.

Applying the same driver-focused engineering principles that shaped the F1

The T.50 supercar is the spiritual successor to the ground-breaking F1, and is being developed with the same unwavering focus on engineering purity and quality.

“Just as with the F1, we have no specific targets for acceleration, top speed or lap times,” explains Murray. “The F1 was fast because it was light and relatively small. The T.50 will deliver performance and dynamic characteristics simply out of reach for other supercars not least because of its low weight. Once again, I have focused on the complete driving experience, not horsepower or top speed.”

The central driving position provides a perfect ‘jet-fighter-style’ visibility, while analogue instruments and driver-centric controls are positioned to provide an even more intuitive and immersive driving experience than the acclaimed F1.

Armed with the same mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive set-up, the new T.50 supercar has perfect weight distribution and will boast incomparable vehicle dynamics and driver feel. Despite the car’s performance capabilities, it is far from a stripped-back racer. The T.50 is an ‘everyday supercar’ capable of GT-style cruising in spacious comfort with room for driver, two passengers and luggage.

“I designed the F1 as a sort of super GT car – absolutely road-focused with no plan to go racing, which is why the car set new standards for packaging and luggage space. The T.50 design has the same focus and betters the F1 in every area – ingress and egress; luggage capacity; serviceability; maintenance and suspension set-up. Also, driver-selectable engine maps ensure a driving mode to suit every situation,” concludes Murray.

Professor Gordon Murray, CBE – biography

Gordon Murray was born in Durban, South Africa in 1946 and gained a Mechanical Engineering Diploma from Natal Technical College. He designed, built and raced his own sports car (the IGM Ford) in the National Class in South Africa during 1967 and 1968.

In 1969 Gordon moved to the UK and joined the Brabham Formula One Team as Technical Director, winning two world championships (1981 and 1983) during his 17 years with the team. Gordon joined McLaren Racing as Technical Director in 1988 and three consecutive championship wins (1988, 1989 and 1990) followed. In 1990, Gordon moved away from Formula One – after 50 Grand Prix wins – to concentrate on establishing a new company for the group, McLaren Cars Limited.

The company’s first project, the F1 road car, is still regarded as one of the world’s best-engineered cars. A racing version won two world sports car championships and the Le Mans 24-hour race on its first attempt in 1995. McLaren Cars then completed several other successful projects culminating in the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren programme.

Gordon left McLaren in 2005 to set up a new company Gordon Murray Design Ltd (in 2007), of which he is Chairman and Technical Director. The innovative British company operates from Surrey, UK and aims to be the world leader in automotive design. It reverses the current industry trend for sub-contracting by having a complete in-house capability for design, prototyping and development.

In 2017, Gordon Murray Design celebrated the company’s 10-year anniversary along with that of the iStream® manufacturing process. At a special event, named ‘One Formula’ Gordon Murray also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the McLaren F1 road car entering production, and his 50th year of car design and engineering.

In May 2019, Professor Murray was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William. The ceremony, held at Buckingham Palace, recognised the contributions made by Murray to the motorsport and automotive sectors over the past 50 years.

Porsche Motorsport Press Release: Redesigned 911 RSR expected to defend world championship...  1554541446878image.gif

    1562425993834image.jpeg

Porsche remains committed to naturally aspirated engine in motorsport Smiley

Stuttgart. Porsche puts its faith in the brand-new 911 RSR (2019 model year) to defend the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) title. The race car complying with the FIA GTE regulations is a completely new development. The vehicle from Weissach has undergone improvements in all areas and will replace the successful 911 RSR with which Porsche won the manufacturers’ and drivers’ world championship in the FIA WEC as well as the Le Mans endurance classic (France) and the IMSA races at Sebring and Road Atlanta (Petit Le Mans) amongst other events in 2019.

In developing the new Porsche 911 RSR, substantial insights were garnered and adopted from the extremely successful race outings of its predecessor. “Since 2017 the 911 RSR has yielded us more than 20 class wins in the world championship as well as at long-distance series in North America and Europe. Our job in the development was to make a very good car even better. The engineers at Weissach have perfectly implemented this in every aspect,” says Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport.

“We never rest on our laurels,” explains Pascal Zurlinden, Director GT Factory Motorsport. “We’ve extensively analysed all factory and customer campaigns with the Porsche 911 RSR. Our engineers noticed room for improvement in a number of areas. We have made significant progress in the development of our car for the next three-year homologation period, especially in the complex areas of driveability, efficiency, durability and serviceability. Ninety-five percent of the car is new. The only components that we’ve kept unchanged from the predecessor are the headlights, brake system, clutch, driver’s seat and parts of the suspension. Tests so far have run excellently. We’re already looking forward to the first races of the 2019/2020 FIA WEC season.”

New flat engine with larger displacement

In terms of the drivetrain, Porsche remains faithful to its chosen path. The latest nine-eleven is also powered by a six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. The highly efficient boxer unit positioned in front of the rear axle has a capacity of 4,194 cc and – depending on the size of the restrictor – produces around 515 hp. The new power unit is the largest ever boxer engine to be mounted in a Porsche 911 ex-works, and offers even better driveability over a wider rev-band compared to the predecessor’s proven four-litre aggregate. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a weight-optimised, more rigid sequential six-speed constant-mesh gearbox. The new powertrain in the Porsche 911 RSR ensures faster gear-shift times and increased efficiency. The two exhaust pipes now exit on each side in front of the rear wheels. The new exhaust gas ducting saves weight and is aerodynamically advantageous.

With the repositioning of the tailpipes, space has been made for an optimised diffuser. The distinctive component at the rear of the Porsche 911 RSR now generates even more downforce. Thanks to the optimisation of airflow at the front and the sides of the Weissach racer, aerodynamic efficiency and stability have increased significantly, thereby further improving the use and durability of the tyres during racing.

Focus on the work of drivers and mechanics

Driveability and serviceability are critical factors in long-distance racing. For this reason, Porsche placed particular emphasis on these aspects when developing the new 911 RSR. The cockpit has been reworked with the focus on better usability. In this regard, extensive feedback from the Porsche drivers proved invaluable. Like with the predecessor, the body made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic can be swapped out quickly and thus ensures efficient pit processes in long-distance racing.

To give drivers added protection, the active and passive safety elements in the Porsche 911 RSR have been overhauled. The proven collision warning system allows drivers an even better overview to detect approaching prototype vehicles early enough. The optimised roll cage, the FIA side impact panel in the door and cage as well as additional impact protection for the legs improve the passive safety in the event of an accident. Other features include the removable roof hatch and the rigidly-mounted racing seat featuring a six-point safety harness for the driver.

First race outing in September 2019

“We’ve been working on the concept of the new Porsche 911 RSR since 2017. The first designs were created using CAD software. In August 2018, the best racing nine-eleven to date completed its first kilometres on the factory’s own test track in Weissach,” says Pascal Zurlinden, describing the important milestones in the car’s development. Over the following months, the factory team conducted numerous tests. Seasoned Porsche works drivers took turns at the wheel of the new 911 RSR. Parallel to this, the aerodynamics were fine-tuned in the Porsche wind tunnel. “Another milestone was our long-run in March 2019 at Le Castellet, where we included the works teams from both the WEC and IMSA. We covered more than 6,000 kilometres over 30 hours without any technical hiccups. The drivers and engineers were very satisfied. The car received its racing homologation on 1st July,” added Zurlinden.

    World premiere at Goodwood

The most spectacular 911 of all time makes its world premiere on 6 July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (Great Britain). The Porsche 911 RSR will also celebrate its race debut on the British Isles – at the season-opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Silverstone on 1 September. Prior to this, the vehicle of the current manufacturers’ world champions will face rival manufacturers contesting the FIA WEC GTE-Pro class for the first time at a two-day prologue in Barcelona (Spain) on 23/24 July. The Porsche GT Team will field two works cars at eight rounds of the 2019/2020 season with drivers Michael Christensen (Denmark) and Kévin Estre (France) as well as Gianmaria Bruni (Italy) and Richard Lietz (Austria). In the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the switch to the latest model will take place in the 2020 season. In North America, an additional two factory-run Porsche 911 RSR will fight for the GTLM category title against competing manufacturers. For customer teams, the vehicle will be available from the 2020/2021 FIA WEC season.

For the first time, the factory race cars from Weissach will be decked out in two different designs: The typical Porsche white will continue to be the dominating colour on the No. 91 car. Added accents include a centrally-placed red stripe extending from the front hood over the roof to the rear apron, as well as red side sills. Grey highlights on the side complement the clear and dynamic design. On the No. 92 car, the white and grey colours are reversed. The rear wing and the wing mirrors are black instead of white so that fans can differentiate between the two.

    • Impressively maintained and presented; displaying less than 21,500 km (13,352 miles)
    • History’s most celebrated modern supercar

The McLaren F1 is that rare supercar that knows no critic. From its aesthetic appeal to its technical merit and competition record, the F1 is nothing short of perfect. So seldom achieved, perfection in design almost always commences with a singular vision, and the F1’s vision belonged to Gordon Murray, the former Brabham Formula 1 designer poached by McLaren in 1987. Murray received a rare dictum from McLaren boss Ron Dennis that would have prompted great envy from any other automotive designer: to build the perfect production sports car, without limitations.

    THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION

With input from Dennis and TAG principal (and McLaren co-owner) Mansour Ojjeh, Murray created one of automotive history’s most successful designs, a perfect harmony of form and function. In true racing fashion that has since become an industry standard, a carbon-fiber-and-aluminum honeycomb cell was the basis of a lightweight monocoque chassis that was mounted with breathtaking carbon-fiber coachwork, in this case penned by Peter Stevens. The F1 famously featured a three-seat configuration with center driver’s position, vertical dihedral scissor doors, a roof-placed engine intake, and distinctive diagonal side-vent diffusers.

Considerable discussion with the manufacturer’s F1 racing partner and engine supplier, Honda, eventually fizzled when McLaren remained steadfast in the pursuit of a naturally aspirated motor of larger displacement. BMW was eventually contracted to design and build a bespoke V-12, which was tuned to develop 627 hp and 479 foot-pounds of torque. Rather than being a continuation of BMW’s concurrent 8 Series–based 12-cylinder motors, this V-12 was a purpose-built engine that shared more in common with the inline-six the company had raced so successfully over the years.

McLaren built just 64 production examples of the F1 road car through 1997, and they have enjoyed favored ownership among the world’s most accomplished and discriminating collectors. Despite the presence of so much advanced technology in the F1, their owners generally agree that the design’s emphasis on pure road connectivity makes it particularly rewarding to drive, as the car lacks anti-lock brakes or modern traction control systems.

While it was designed as a street machine, the F1 was nonetheless built with specifications worthy of racing, prompting several early buyers to approach McLaren about factory support for privateer outings. After initially attempting to dissuade the owners from competition, Dennis soon decided to join the fray properly, and an F1 GTR version was developed with enhanced racing specifications.

Dennis’s goal was to win the BPR Championship and take victory in the ultimate barometer of sports car success, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The F1 GTR achieved this rather effortlessly, winning the BPR Championship three consecutive years from 1995 to 1997, and winning the 1995 Le Mans outright, along with 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-place finishes. Results at the Circuit du Sarthe over the following years proved nearly as successful, with the GTR finishing as high as 4th in 1996, 2nd in 1997, and 4th in 1998, a testament to its longevity in the face of more freshly developed competition.

Following the F1’s victory at Le Mans in 1995, the manufacturer launched a short batch of commemorative road-capable cars that were dubbed the F1 LM. Among other improvements, these cars were equipped with full-specification, unrestricted GTR racing engines good for 680 hp, and a High-Downforce Kit (HDK) of aerodynamic effects consisting of a revised nose with front fender vents and a huge rear wing.

    McLAREN SPECIAL OPERATIONS

In addition to its supreme design and domination in competition, the F1 is notable for its customer service program. Supervised by a dedicated division that has since been re-titled under the aegis of McLaren Special Operations (MSO), this program involves to this day a fastidious schedule of 18-month maintenance visits for as-needed service, all tracked by a meticulous multi-point evaluation. For owners dedicated to completely commit, the expensive program ensures that each and every F1 will always be optimally maintained and thoroughly documented, providing an almost unmatched level of factory service for a production model.

With a total output of 106 examples, including 64 production road cars, 28 F1 GTR race cars, five F1 LM examples, and two F1 GTs (as well as seven prototype and development cars), the McLaren F1 boasts a degree of rarity that is commensurate with its other sterling qualities. It also claims the distinction of being the world’s fastest naturally aspirated production model after setting a record at the Ehra-Lessien Proving Grounds in Germany in 1998 at 240.14 mph.

CHASSIS NUMBER 018: LE MANS SPECIFICATION

Following completion of the full production run in 1997, McLaren upgraded two “standard” F1 road cars to LM specifications, including upgrading the engine to unrestricted 680 hp GTR specification. Serial no. 073 (which RM Sotheby’s also had the honor of offering for sale) and the featured car, serial no. 018, were additionally equipped with the Extra-High Downforce Kit that included (and exceeded) the coachwork effects of the LM examples, including the front air vents and rear wing. Notably, these two cars retain their more comfortably outfitted interiors over the more spartan LM trim.

This F1 was built in 1994, and it was originally finished in Midnight Blue Pearl over a black interior and dispatched to its first owner, an enthusiast residing in Japan. In 1999 the F1 was sold to a collector in Germany, and he returned the car to the factory in Surrey in 2000 to commission a series of upgrades to LM specifications.

This work was conducted in two rounds, the first during 2000 and the second a year later, and also included the installation of the HDK, a transmission cooler, two additional radiators, and a modified exhaust system. The air-conditioning was upgraded, a radio was added to the CD player, the headlamps were changed to gas-discharge units, and the steering wheel was exchanged for a 14-inch unit. The exterior was refinished in the current livery of platinum silver metallic, and the interior was re-trimmed with cream leather highlighted by beige and brown Alcantara, cream Wilton carpets, and a beige Alcantara headliner. The dampers and springs were also upgraded to race-spec units and adjusted to their softest setting for comfortable road use. Finally, the standard 17-inch wheels were replaced by special 18-inch GTR wheels mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

As McLaren exists first and foremost as a racing team with the purpose of being on the cutting edge, it should therefore be understood that these upgrades are not a deviation from the car’s original specification, but rather an extension of McLaren’s design ethos—which is to say, to be the best of best.

    THE OPPORTUNITY FOR PERFECTION

In 2004 the F1 was acquired by a well-regarded marque collector based in Singapore, and he only minimally drove the car over the following three years. The McLaren was carefully garaged while enjoying the company of the owner’s other F1. “You could not ask for a more dedicated owner,” wrote F1 service program manager Harold Dermott in a letter to the consignor.

In October 2007 the LM-specification McLaren was acquired from the Singapore collector by the consignor, a marque enthusiast and knowledgeable racing connoisseur based in New Zealand. As part of the purchase, the car was shipped to Woking, Surrey, to be evaluated and serviced by MSO as needed per the department’s strenuous checklist. Mr. Dermott remarked during the transaction, “F1/018 is one of my favorite F1s and one of the most heavily developed cars that we have ever built” —no small endorsement of 018’s quality.

A thorough file of documentation during the consignor’s ownership demonstrates how he was very active in gently testing the F1 upon deliveries back from MSO, carefully weighing in on subjects like the tire and brake system setups, exhaust flow, and engine response. During his ownership the car was driven on three McLaren F1 Owners Club tours organized by the 1996 BPR champion and Le Mans veteran Ray Bellm, including the 20th Anniversary Tour on Lake Garda, Italy, in 2012, the 2014 Tuscany F1 Tour, as well as the 25th Anniversary Tour in Bordeaux in 2017. On each occasion, the car was submitted to MSO before and after the events for full preparation and servicing, as well as delivery to and from the rally locations, in another display of the McLaren’s outstanding customer service and attention.

F1/018 currently remains in outstanding condition, with a thorough record of regular service by MSO, including several replacements of the fuel cell on its 18-month schedule. Modestly driven but thoroughly enjoyed, the F1 displays less than 21,500 km (13,352 miles).

Incredibly rare, 018 is one of only two production road car examples to be equipped by the factory with the incredibly powerful F1 LM racing engine, which is effectively a derestricted 1995 GTR racing motor. Furthermore, with the factory-conducted body modifications, “the car is estimated to have more downforce than the Le Mans–winning 1995 GTR race car,” as the 2006 summary of 018 by MSO concludes.

Offering all the performance of the outrageously powerful and hyper-rare F1 LM at a fraction of the investment, F1/018 is an extremely desirable example. It is quite simply la crème de la crème, the best imaginable iteration of an already-perfect machine. The awe-inspiring McLaren would make a crowning addition to any collection, offering a distinctive and top-shelf example of the celebrated F1 so legendary among all motoring enthusiasts, from gawking fans to the most distinguished of collectors.
