    OFFICIAL: 992 Carrera Cabriolet

Six weeks after the Coupe’s launch, attention turns to the 911 Cabriolet. The open-top 911 continues in a decades-long tradition, established when Porsche unveiled the prototype of the first 911 Cabriolet at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September 1981: customers and fans alike were instantly captivated. The first open-top 911 variant rolled off the production line in 1982, and it has been a constant feature in the model range ever since. The open version of the 911, which marks the start in 2019 of an unprecedented product fireworks display, has all the innovations of the coupe. One of the Cabriolet-specific advanced features is the new hydraulic system which get the roof opened and closed more quickly.

The new model echoes the modern lines of the Coupe, though it remains unmistakably a Porsche 911 in Cabriolet form. The fully-automatic soft top has an integrated glass rear window, while the soft top structure contains magnesium surface elements known as bows, which reliably prevent ballooning of the roof at high speeds. The soft top can be opened or closed at speeds up to 50 km/h. New roof hydraulics reduce opening time to around twelve seconds, while an electrically extendable wind deflector ensures that necks are shielded from wind impact.

The 911 Cabriolet is initially available as a Carrera S* with rear-wheel drive and Carrera 4S* with all-wheel drive. Both rely on a 2,981 cm³ charged six-cylinder boxer engine with 331 kW (450 PS) at 6,500 rpm and 530 Nm torque between 2,300 and 5,000 rpm. The drive efficiency has been increased and emissions reduced by way of an improved injection process; other optimisation measures have also been implemented, such as a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system. The power is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Carrera S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (with optional Sport Chrono Package: 3.7 seconds) and can reach speeds up to 306 km/h. The Carrera 4S attains a top speed of 304 km/h and achieves 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (with optional Sport Chrono Package: 3.6 seconds).

The new engine mounting position makes the Cabriolet even more torsionally rigid than its predecessor. For the first time, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sport chassis is available for the 911 Cabriolet. The springs used for this are harder and shorter, the front and rear anti-roll-bars are more rigid, and the chassis overall has been lowered by ten millimetres. These adjustments give the 911 a more neutral feel on the road, with better weight distribution.

An exterior design that draws on earlier generations of the 911
The new 911 Cabriolet looks wider, more self-assured and altogether more muscular than its predecessor. Wider wings arch over the large 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear. The rear-wheel-drive models now match the bodywork width of the existing all-wheel models. The rear axle is 44 mm larger. The front end – generally 45 mm wider – revives a traditional feature from earlier 911 generations: a forward-extended bonnet with a distinctive recess in front of the windscreen. Both elements lengthen the front of the vehicle and give it a dynamic look.

The rear of all models is dominated by the significantly wider, variable-position spoiler and the continuous, seamless and elegant light bar. With the exception of the front and rear sections, the entire outer skin is now made from aluminium.

    Redesigned interior with clear lines
The interior is distinctive, with the clear, straight lines and recessed instruments defining the dashboard. As it does in the original 911, the new dashboard covers the entire width between two horizontal wing levels. Alongside the centrally positioned rev counter, two thin, frameless freeform displays deliver information to the driver. Now 10.9 inches in size, the centre screen of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) can be operated quickly and without causing distraction.

Sophisticated assistance systems enhance safety and comfort
In a world first, Porsche has developed Wet Mode, which is included as standard. This function detects water on the road, preconditions the control systems accordingly and warns the driver, who can then set the car up to focus on safety, by simply pushing a button or using the mode switch on the steering wheel (Sport Chrono Package). The camera-based warning and brake assist system, also fitted as standard, detects the risk of collision with vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, and initiates a warning or emergency braking procedure if necessary. A park assistant system including reversing camera completes the standard configuration of the Cabriolet. Options for the 911 include Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera, as well as adaptive cruise control with automatic distance control, stop-and-go function and reversible occupant protection.

The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet starts from 134,405 euros in Germany and the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet from 142,259 euros, including VAT and country-specific equipment. The new models can be ordered now.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 992 Carrera Cabriolet

There is only so much that can be done to the established proportions of the 911 considering that aerodynamics still influence even the compromised design of a cabriolet.  That will dictate a higher rear deck with a windscreen set to deflect air flow over and around the open cabin.  Probably best to acquire a coupe and be done with it.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 992 Carrera Cabriolet

I'm sure the size of the hump is similar to the 991, the problem is that is visually more exaggerated in the 992 due to the rear's design with the big wide engine lid grill, and the narrow rear lights, an recessed light bar that sort of highlights the hump on top.

I can only imagine how the cab is going to look on the highway with the 992's infamous ugly rear spoiler up in combination with the hump angry

The car may look very different in the sheet metal than in flat 2-D photographs.  One will wait to pass judgment until having seen the cabriolet in person.

It will look better in the dark with the light off or around a corner or at a great distance.  Coupe looks better and better.

any pics with the top up?  Scary they are not showing that if they are willing to show the top down like that.  Maybe I missed them.

When people start using that recourse it is already a bad sign. If anything the hump is even going to be more noticeable in real life than the carefully selected angles by profesional photographers in the official pictures above.

None of this banter matters because the cabriolet will sell and Porsche will sell myriad more SUVs than sports cars.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 992 Carrera Cabriolet

I don't know what they were thinking about while releasing a Cab....the misalignment in the rear are a big design f*ck up imho. 992 Coupe has very accurate rear, meanwhile 992 Cab...enlightened Shame....

My point is, if you say that this misalignment is only on pre-production cars and production cars won't look messed up, so why would they show this rear mess for public by releasing the pictures of the pre-production cars into press?

Sorry but this isn't an excuse for a brand like Porsche....Ssangyong perhaps or Lada, but not Porsche. It's a luxury GERMAN brand after all. The details are very important.

I cannot imagine Rolex release a new model of their watch with unfinished look, put it into their promotion catalogue and a salesman are telling to the buyers like: "Oh...don't worry about that, your watch will look Ok, it's the pre-production model pictured in the catalogue..."

Btw, the pictures I've used for example, are far from being a pre-production car. So I wouldn't be so sure if it's gets fixed.

They obviously did it on purpose so we would not stand back and look at the big ugly picture. Regardless - from close up or from afar it is not pleasing or attractive. Still not pics wit the top up. Oh what horror are they hiding?

There is only one with the top up in their press release and it's taken from a very specific angle...

They should change the vents design/position on the cab, it doesn't work well with the new slim rear lights, it looks too "massive" on the cabriolet, especially with the "hump". Smiley

Changing the vents is a massive engineering undertaking and the costs involved would significantly increase the price of the cabriolet.  The new WLTP adds another dimension of costs.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 992 Carrera Cabriolet

Actually, I for one am worried; worried that they are cutting corners in places that will be less visible, under pressure to increase profits for the group.

I was at the dealer last week and sat in a 718 GTS; I notices that the plastic panel behind the light switch and ignition key receptacle is now made of a cheaper shinier plastic that does not match any other material in the rest of the interior. About as bad as the side vent material in the new BMW X3; and that stuff is ugly!

    Re: OFFICIAL: 992 Carrera Cabriolet

Volkswagen Group is under tremendous pressure in a post-dieselgate world to reform the business model.  Cost cutting, unfortunately, is part of that strategy; however, other automakers have the same macro issues.  The new management team will learn what their client base considers important.

Lamborghini went the other way: They added RWS and a few other goodies to the Huracan (Evo) and raised the price tag by a whopping 17k EUR (Germany). Smiley Smiley This is a massive price hike for a facelift. Smiley

The RWS and other stuff doesn't cost 17k euro to produce...................

Lambo is just jacking up the margin.
