OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 718 T (Boxster & Cayman)

With the 718 T, Porsche has transferred the puristic design of the 1968 911 T to its range of two-seater sports cars. The new model in the Boxster and Cayman ranges combines the 220 kW (300 PS) turbo four-cylinder flat engine with a particularly emotional Porsche driving experience. The high-performance character of the T models is emphasised by an extensive equipment package, which includes 20-inch alloy wheels, the PASM sports chassis lowered by 20 millimetres – which is being offered in combination with the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine for the first time in this range – the shortened gearshift, on which the gears are emblazoned in red, and the Sport Chrono package. These features can only be enjoyed in combination with the basic engine in the 718 T. Porsche is offering both the Boxster and Cayman variants with six-speed gearbox and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), including mechanical rear axle differential locking. Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK) is also available as an option.

Traditionally, “T” stands for “Touring” in Porsche models, and is synonymous with driving pleasure in its purest form. The 718 T will be most at home on winding country roads, offering the joy of dynamic driving as its ultimate goal. The two-seater accommodates this philosophy through a pared down range of features. These include black door pulls in the door panels and sports seats with electric two-way adjustment, black Sport-Tex centre sections and the “718” logo embroidered on the headrests.

The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) module has also been replaced by a large storage compartment, though buyers who do not wish to forego the entertainment system may order it at no extra charge. Put together, these measures balance out the additional weight created by the installation of the gasoline particulate filter (GPF).

In the interior, the character of the 718 T is highlighted through a number of emphatically sporty touches: luxurious padding and leather covering means the convenient, 360-millimetre GT sports steering wheel with Mode switch offers a particularly secure grip. Other “Boxster T” or “Cayman T” logos adorn the black instrument dials. The decorative trims of the instrument panel and central console gleam in a glossy black finish. “Boxster T” or “Cayman T” logos also appear on the door entry strips.

The exterior of the Porsche 718 T is characterised by its powerful appearance. With 20-inch alloy wheels painted in high-gloss titanium grey, combined with the PASM sports chassis with 20-millimetre lowered body, it simply looks outstanding on the road. Agate grey mirror shells and “718 Boxster T” or “718 Cayman T” logos on the sides declare the model variant, which can also be identified from the rear, by the centrally positioned sports exhaust with black, chrome-plated twin tailpipes. In terms of exterior colours, buyers can choose from black, Indian Red, Racing Yellow and white as well as Carrara White, Deep Black and GT Silver metallic colours. Porsche is also offering Lava Orange and Miami Blue as special colours. Adjusted for equipment, 718 T buyers can enjoy a price advantage of 5 – 10% compared to a similarly equipped basic model.

The 220 kW (300 PS) turbocharged flat engine accelerates the Porsche 718 T powerfully and boasts up to 7,500 revolutions. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine reaches its maximum torque of 380 Nm at 2,150/min and has an unladen weight of 1,350 (PDK: 1,380) kilograms. Thanks to a weight-to-power ratio of 4.5 (4.6) kg/PS, it can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 5.1 (4.7) seconds. The vehicle’s top speed is 275 km/h.

The Sport Chrono package, included as standard for the 718 T, offers Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual driving modes, which can be selected using the Mode switch on the steering wheel. Sport and Sport Plus activate sportier characteristics in both the engine management system and the accelerator, with the automatic dual-clutch function supporting you as you move down the gears in the manual transmission. Sport Plus further hones the handling of the 718 T by ensuring sportier configuration of the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Active Drivetrain Mounts (PADM) adaptive body positioning and the optional Porsche dual-clutch transmission. In combination with PDK, the Launch Control function and the Sport Response button in the centre of the Mode switch are also available for use.

One special feature of this model is its dynamic gearbox mount – the PADM system, which minimises vibrations in the engine/gearbox area and reduces movements that could affect driving dynamics as a result of the total mass of the drivetrain. This combines the advantages of hard and soft gearbox mounts: driving behaviour becomes noticeably more precise and stable during changes in load and on fast curves. Driving comfort is unaffected on uneven roads.

The Porsche 718 Cayman T costs from 63,047 euros in Germany and the 718 Boxster T from 65,070 euros, including value added tax and country-specific equipment. The new models are available to order now in EU28 and other markets applying the same standards.

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 718 T (Boxster & Cayman)

If the 991 is an indication this is probably the last hurrah of the 718. Has anyone seen mules of the successor?

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 718 T (Boxster & Cayman)

It's not the last hurrah. We have yet to see the GT4 and Spyder models. It looks like Porsche are now slotting the T model in as another way of boosting sales midway through a model cycle. The base and S models carry the torch for the first couple of years with the T and GTS effectively supplanting them for the final two years is how it looks like the plan is evolving. It makes a degree of sense as early adopters need something different to tempt them out of their cars after a couple of years.

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 718 T (Boxster & Cayman)

The T and the GTS are simply targeted option packages. In the case of the T, this includes some options that would not be otherwise available on the base model. Yes, they do provide "new news" halfway through the model cycle, but I think they appeal to different buyers compared to the base and S model (more so the based than the S.)

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 718 T (Boxster & Cayman)

I really prefer the exterior styling of the 718 over the 981; even the Porsche script in the back. The interior vents is a step back imo. In any case, I am not parting with my 6-cylinder GTS for any 4-cyl model. I am first in line at my dealer for the next GT4 though, so tough decision coming up in the new year...

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 718 T (Boxster & Cayman)

Will be interesting to see if US press release makes no mention of gpf and there is actually a weight loss...

This car Looks sooooo amazing - I do really like the design. However, as one of the journalists had it the other day "...the people having enjoyed the beetle engine sound in the past, will not care..."...it is really sad...but, there seem to be a lot of people around buying a 718....

Believe it or not but I haven't seen a 718 on public roads over here in Germany for ages. Smiley I've seen more Teslas than 718. Smiley

I'm driving a 718 Cayman GTS today, fantastic chassis, a joy, but the engine is lifeless, more than plenty of low end grunt and performance for a Cayman, but if you would tell me it is from a VW Golf I would believe it, no exhaust sound, bad engine sound, and no exitement on top end. Driving dinamics are excellent though,  and if you cant tell the difference between a 6cil and a 4cil and a turbo and an atmospheric, then it is a fantastic package, but if you own its 6cil NA predecessor then hold on to it.

well, in the Frankfurt area one sees them more often - still, having had a 4 cyl. Porsche in the past, it is really a shame what impact a decision on engine sound can have...

well said, exactly my thoughts on a 718 S loaner I had recently...it is an rediculous idea for a sport car but I would rather drive a 718 muted to zero in contrast to this very angry beetle...uuuppps, welcome to the new electric drivetrain world...

Don’t entirely agree with the comparison with a Golf engine Carlos - if our Golf GTI ran as roughly as the 718 engine I’d be taking it back to the dealer and saying there was something seriously wrong with it Smiley

The frustration is 718 is an improvement in every other way over the 981, but that awful engine completely ruins it. Smiley

Still want to reply that Audi made an aurally dynamic motor for the TT RS, while Porsche failed that task even with a clean sheet engine design.

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 718 T (Boxster & Cayman)

TT RS is an in-line 5 cylinder though which is mechanically much more interesting and sounds great

It is a very cool motor.  It deserves its own special platform (instead of VW Golf one).  I wish Audi would have built the Retro Quattro concept car...

What you failed to mention is one needs to be 1.5 meters or less to fit in that car.

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 718 T (Boxster & Cayman)

Oh no, the seats and pedalbox are tailered made to fit the owner. Never heard a complain about lenght, it’s width that’s more of a challenge for some drivers. Or driving in someone else’s car yes

I (1,74m) own the coupe version, even with a full face helmet on no problem with height. kiss

If I was in the market for an “affordable” sports car I would walk away from Porsche and their awful engines (with much regret) and buy a BMW M2 Compeition. Much cheaper and a hugely better drivetrain.
