Want to tune my 997 tt. 9ff nor not ?

    Hello all,

I want to tune my 997.1 turbo. I am based in Germany. I was thinking of 9ff, since they provide rather nice packages, 700-1000 + HP. However, I hear above average complaints of their quality and craftmanship, especially reliabilty. So I am a bit unsure whether to do it there or not.

Anyone can share some insight please ? Many thanks in advance.

In what region do you live? From my experience, it is best to get a tuner close to you, just in case. Smiley

Near Frankfurt, relatively close would be Ruf, but never want to go to that bad place again. Had a very bad experience.

But my query is more about 9ff ? Any good or better not ?

Could you share what happened at Ruf to make you say this, it would help with advice I could give you about 9ff

Re: Want to tune my 997 tt. 9ff nor not ?

Dont really know what one would have to do with the other ?!?! Anyhow, I had my car tuned at Ruf many years ago, and when I was supposed to pick it up they informed me the car wasnt ready, but only a week after. So I went the week after to pick it up and enquired about the delay. They said that a large toolbox had fallen on the rear of my car and they had to repaint it. The paint job was the worst ever, totally crap. Only much later and by chance, it was discovered by another car dealership that the car was actually crashed and Ruf never mentioned a word about it. I had bought the car brand spanking new and never ever let anyone drive it.  Very very annoying matter. On top of that, the performance from the tuning was mediocre at best. Also had several issues with the car after the tuning, nothing major but still annoying,

So, pls give me the advice about 9ff :-)

Re: Want to tune my 997 tt. 9ff nor not ?

Sorry for the late reply, I dealt with 9ff a couple years ago but rather business related than as a customer so things might have changed since then. Jan Fatthauer is a cool guy, pretty laid back. I´d say that his company is basically a one-man show and follows a hands-on approach. Therefore most developments are pretty individual and different to companies like Techart where I believe that one single tuning configuration is being developed, tested and offered as a single product. 9ff, and I believe RS-Tuning as well, serve individual requests much more.

Therefore, if you are only looking for a tuning in the region of 700 hp, most other companies can offer the same. If you are seriously aiming for four-digit hp numbers there won't be many other companies around offering a similar product.

That said, which car do you base the tuning on? For a long time, these numbers were only achieved with the old Mezger engine as a base, I have no knowledge how good and reliable the modifications are on the newer engine generations although I figured that 9ff offers these as well by now.

Re: Want to tune my 997 tt. 9ff nor not ?

He was thinking of a 997.1 Turbo - which got my attention. Mezger all the way.

Silly me... completely overlooked that. Nonetheless, my opinion remains the same.

For a high-power weekend fun toy, I would go with 9ff. For a long-distance Autobahn car I would contemplate a bit as the question would be how reliable the engine would be in the long term. 900 - 1000 hp is twice the original output and you either have to extensively modify or something has to give at some point... not something I would want on a car unless it is a weekend toy I can spare.

Re: Want to tune my 997 tt. 9ff nor not ?

Yes, 997.1 turbo. The best :-)

Ferdie, who would you recommend if not 9ff ? Looking for around 800 hp plus.

RS Tuning...good quality, good prices but you need to like their attitude. Smiley Smiley

Also, do not laugh: Techart. They sell solid stuff but they won't get you to extreme power levels.

A little advice: Keep your 997.1 under 600 hp. The engine may take more with certain mods but not the rest of the car. Smiley

From my understanding, that hp level already demands extensive modifications. Apart from RS-Tuning, Ruf and 9ff I actually doń´t know many alternatives. I experienced 9ff´s 750 and 850 hp versions and they were very impressive but the ride was too short to give any qualified statement about things like torque curve, throttle response etc.

Maybe inquire which modifications they include in these power upgrades, I am fairly certain it wońt be simple nor cheap as it demands modifications on the engine internals and I guess we speak about a mid five-digit pricetag in that case.

Sorry that I cannot give you more advice on that, please let us know when you found out more about it. Smiley

Re: Want to tune my 997 tt. 9ff nor not ?

I would be more concerned about the rest of the car as RC points out. The drivetrain and other components are not up to 800 hp abuse.  Even if you do nothing to it you need to be aware that the coolant fittings will fail - 100% - so if you have any other work done which requires engine removal address this while it’s out. Aftermarket makes some good billet replacements for the plastic parts which fail. They fail on the GT3 Mezger was well. It is a function of water cooling an air cooled motor.

If you stick under 625 hp or so your drivetrain will thank you.
