    Re: 991 GT3 RS

here is a question to RS owners: i could not fail to notice a rather loud noise coming from the rear suspension (mostly right side it seems) when going over bumps in the road at low to medium speeds. sounds like 'claaaank' and yesterday there was one instance which made me think that something serious broke....the strange thing is that it seems really random and very much dependent on the speed (never happened at >80kmh so far).  rear tyre touching the inner wheel lining? shocks? no idea but bothersome.

    any ideas guys? cheers peter

no, i have taken it out.

    Re: 991 GT3 RS

FWIW: I find mine rather silent. No "clank".

Maybe the swaybar linkage is loose. I would take it to Porsche for them to fix.

very poor roads and no suspension noise all day.....seems it needs a certain  speed or bump frequency

    Re: 991 GT3 RS

Im sure I have had something similar in my 991 GT3. Don't think you should worry too much. The GT3 seems to make all sorts of funny thumps and twangs.

Most likely the springs. I have a an aftermarket (high end) set of shocks and springs and it does exactly what you describe, happens at low speeds and completely random and sometimes sounds like something just broke - I'm told it is totally benign.

the noise as such does not bother me, i just don't want to see my rear wheel in the rear view mirror when going over the next bump:::)))

    Re: 991 GT3 RS

The GT models' reduced compliance (rubber bushes, etc.) means that you are less isolated from road shocks.

Exactly. The regular 991 now with turbo is too comfy and not exclusive enough... They need to expand the GT lines, 4 seaters, convertible, with or without wings...

You mean the solution to the too comfy regular models is to make the GT models more comfy Smiley

Why would you want them more comfy? Adding two seats and chop the roof has nothing to do with confortSmiley

You think because your GT4 is manual it is more "manly"? Well think again, my wife loves her manual mini...

    Actually, it does, but indirectly.
The much stiffer GTx spring/damper combinations have never been installed into cabrio 911s for a very good reason. The punishment which the suspension subjects the body to is too great for the less rigid convertible bodies, and would cause them to fail early. For the same reason, Porsche has been unable to offer lowered versions of 911 cabrios in the past, even when the lowered suspensions were available on coupes.

These are excuses... Ferrari does it, McLaren does it, Lotus does it... Porsche has way more money and resources than all combined.

    Interesting. Or, maybe not angry

How do they know it is the GTS and not just a Targa prototype with the new SportDesign bumper?

Also, this sticks out "The Gen1 991 GTS featured a slicker shifting seven-speed than the comparable base cars" - Did it?

In any case, if all true, it appears that the GTS will remain a "fully optioned S with a power kit" rather than a GT3 with rear seats.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Porsche to expend those resources developing the umpteenth 911 variant just to be able to offer a car with such conflicting characteristics that from the outset it would only appeal to a very limited circle of potential buyers.

    Re: 991 GT3 RS

To add further neither Ferrari or Mclaren offer lowered sport suspension for their cars. They use the same suspension for their models which usually use little bit softer dampers for their spider models (650S or 488).

Porsche offers unique SPASM which can be combined with PDCC on Carrera S Coupe models. It is specially tuned suspension that can be used daily and in the race track. Yes, it is little bit too demanding for Cabrio or Targa version, but it is more Porsche decision not to offered it then technical limit (look at 718 Boxster S which can be specd with SPASM).

How good is SPASM/PDCC? So, good that 991.2 CS equiped with it is as fast on thr Ring and Klein Kurs Hockenheim as 991.1 GT3. With street P Zero tires...

Honestly... have you been driven 650/488?  I think you should try again, especially on 650S...  the ride is like RollsRoyce!!!   PDCC is nice on fast corners, but as for ride quality, 650 undoubtedly wins any 911s......  Try to drive one, u will be surprised.  same goes with 488.  easily a daily driver's choice if you take away its look....

    Re: 991 GT3 RS

Driven 650S and 488 GTB. Very impressed with 488 GTB. Much less so with 650S, despite the fact that car is very fast. Will drive 570S next week.

Just... 650S ride is like Rolls Royce?! Really?? Well, ride is certainly very good for a true sportscar. But, like Rolls Royce?  Not even close. Period. You shoild really test drive latest S Class and see what truly  comfortable ride feels like.

Other remark... All Mclaren cars feel somehow soft. Even 488 GTB feels little bit underdamped for me. But, that is personal preferance.

I think the comparison with RR like is meant different. No one on earth would except that a super sportscar drives like RR. McLaren proactive chassis control is far better then PDCC, it has a much wider bandwidth in usage. Also 650 s coupe and spider don´t need different damper settings because they both use a carbon monocoque and their chassis have the same stiffness. A huge benefit compared to 488.

Limited? They sold 1000 R very easily, the market for 4 seater and convertible variants of that car is very big, easily in the thousands at prices close to $200k...

I disagree.  I think the demand for the car at $200k is largely because they built 991 units.  Tell the world you're building thousands of each Coupe, Convertible, and 4-seater and demand would look very different.

Well, 650S is like 5 years old already...

As far as suspension goes between exotics and Porsche, there was recently the TTS vs 488 comparison video and you could tell that the 911 had a much worse ride than the 488 just by observing the camera movement. Can't comment on it vs the 650S, but I've found the 12C comfort suspension to be much more comfortable than any other sports cars I've driven. S-Class? No, probably not, but then again, I lived in the area with some of the worst roads in all of America, so maybe I'm just so used to it and that no ride quality is ever really that bad. Even track mode feels fine to me in the 12C unless I'm literally driving over train tracks.
