Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

The miles he has put on cars like the 918 and the 911R which you can flip for a good profit if you keep the miles low shows depreciation is not a priority for him IMO.

I am finding it interesting how many people have forgotten "normal" pre 2010 depreciation rates, there seem to be a lot of car guys who have been getting used to getting allocations of non depreciating or appreciating cars, I thought Whoopsy has been a car guy for a bit longer and can remember past his recent VIP allocations but the "jaw dropping" comment indicates otherwise. I'm interested would he still have bought his myriad of special cars if there had been the normal 15-30% annual hit ? Smiley

@TB993tt you make a valid point at the start of this post and then go off on the wrong tangent. You are just picking on the wrong guys in @Whoopsy and me earlier in this thread - we are depreciation junkies Smiley.

For most car dealers, used car mark up are between 15%-30%

Do the math and you will know what price they paid for the car from the original owner.

And if you look at the cars from the owner's selling side, not the dealer's asking price side, the depreciation is jaw dropping.

Most cars can expect a 15-30% depreciation the first year. Porsche GT and Ferrari mid engine are the exception.Smiley

    haha.

You forgot I have had and still have some depreciation kings! I had 2 FFs, an Audi S8, a Bangle BMW 745i, Alpina B7, a ML63, a Land Rover LR4, couple X5s, a X6M, a the 997 Turbo and Turbo S, couple of 996 C4S. Still have the Aston, the SVR and the Huracan Spyder, the Cayenne Turbo S. Smiley

Non was even close to the 12C's 30% drop for the 1s year. Not even the 745i and that was the most depreciated cars in those years,  kept the car for 3 years and ended up losing 45%. Not even the 4 seat V12 Ferrari can match the epic depreciation from McLaren.

Rough estimation of depreciation cost from all those would gets me say a Singer now.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

heard from a friend that BMW here in Switzerland has 27000 lease contracts - 30 cars coming back DAILY - remaining value peanuts - a 100k car residual less than 20k with 80k km - I am sure it's valid for many brands - hence buying new is sort of crazy these days.....

This is why I lease... Smiley Buying used would be an alternative but I don't want to buy a used car with 5-10k km, simply because I don't know how it was treated, especially when it comes to high revving or turbo engines.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

RC represents a type of restless mindset who wants to change cars rather frequently and always have the latest. He also wants to be at P1 on the Autobahn and therefore rejects anything with a previous model's performance. Hence he is a "serial lessee".

This is appreciated and there is nothing wrong with it as long as this makes the person happy.

Others have a different attitude, as they like the long term ownership of a car as a beloved possession. They revel in covering high mileages with their companion car and don't care about depreciation since their car will not be for sale anytime soon.

The point is for everyone to enjoy his automotive life in any way that suits him.

Smiley I can speak about the German car market only. Most regular cars, not talking Porsche Carrera GT here or LaFerrari... Smiley, have a very high deprecation right now, especially "bread and butter" luxury cars like the BMW 7 series or the Mercedes S class. Same goes to BMW 3 series, Mercedes C class and similar cars, I could continue with other brands as well. There is a certain volatile vibe in the car markets here in Germany, there is a lot of nervousness, especially with the fallout from the emissions scandal and the fact that EVs seem(!) to be the future, at least this is what politicians and car magazines are telling us. Smiley This is why buying a "regular" car is not only risky, it is dumb. Depreciation is uncontrollable for most cars and you end up with a huge loss if you are unlucky. This can even happen to cars with high demand. Nobody can predict the future. So while I understand why someone wants to buy a Huracan Performante or a GT3 Touring as keepers, I do not understand why someone would buy a new BMW 7 series or even a new Porsche 911 (991.2) right now.  Some of the lease offers out there are sensational and you have no risk whatsoever to get stuck with a car you don't want to drive anymore after two or three years.
