On my third consecutive black 911. On my 8th Porsche over 40 continuous years - all 911 except for my first 914. Born a few miles from Frankfurt end of September 1963 just like the 911. Never owned a new one but been in line for a GT3 since they offered them with the 996. Estimate 800k plus just 911 miles. Over the years I have cut many corners and passed on many other spending choices to afford my hobby. Some choices harder than others and most not good ones.

I love my current car but that is always the case. Thank you Porsche for an excellent life!  There is no substitute.

Maybe time to try something else (it sounds like you are stuck in a rut), a McLaren 570S for example would really open your eyes Smiley

The latest 991.2 Turbo S is way too stodgy, that SA test someone kindly posted talks about the GTS being faster in some corners and points to the weight, I found this car too clinical and the heavy feeling meant it was hard and unsatisfying to make it move around  just made it boring. The SA test also suggests a lighter 2WD version may be more interesting, I concur.

Good suggestion. I always look to sow the seeds of self doubt. I may be in a rut. The Mac would be the logical choice. No doubt it would open my eyes. Perhaps when my little one is done with her PhD. Until then saving for college and retirement is a big consideration.  But excellent observation!  Thanks for caring.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

Emotion-wise, I am leaning towards the Huracan Performante or the 600LT. Price-wise, I am leaning towards the R8 facelift (Performance), maybe as a Spyder. We'll see... Maybe I am getting a 992.1 Turbo S Cab instead, if my wife really wants one (then I would have to compromise).

My car budget is more severely restricted. Software developers can’t exactly print money - it is a cut throat highly competitive dog eat dog industry. Especially for old white guys like me. But I get the appeal of the R8 a lot. I think they are a bit more expensive here. I would prefer the Mac.

I had a similar 911 profile to you and would never have considered myself in a rut but thanks to Porsche UK and their GT Porsche allocation policy they knocked me out of the rut to try something else and I am so glad they did Smiley

Fully understand and respect the financial side, the kids and important life decisions have to come first, hopefully the 570s will continue to heavily depreciate.

McLaren depreciation is of epic proportions. Despite being the class leader, the 720S is suffering from this more than the 570.

I think your expectations are wrong if you expected McLarens to have the depreciation profile of GT Porsche or certain other specialist limited niche models whereas they in fact have the depreciation curve of a marque like Bentley.

20%+ pa used to be normal depreciation, my 997GT2 was £138K new and two years later was worth about £70K, this used to be normal and will be again for all cars.

There seem to have been people buying £250K+ 720s who really couldn't afford them but were relying on low depreciation so Mclaren have made more than the market can take so unfortunately they are going to fall to levels which people can afford. I saw that someone had just taken delivery of chassis 3000 and production will probably finish next year when the spider version comes out.

Nothing wrong with a used cheap 720s. That’s good news for me. They are mechanical things only. Nothing magic about putting the first miles on vs the last. If anyone ever is ready to unload theirs cheap to some sleazy dealer let me have it for that price instead. That’s all I ask. I’ve got a good home for it.

To be clear, I went in with my eyes open. However, even I have been shocked by just how bad it is. Now let’s see what happens to the Senna.

What are routine servicing costs like for the Macs?

    Comparable to Porsche?

    And does it vary region?

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

I recall the early MP4’s had electrical issues.

Are there any recurring headaches with the later series of cars?

Volumes in Australia are pretty low. Hence the pre-owned prices are more cushioned than the UK.  We can bring in cars from the UK greater than 5 years of age with reasonable tax concessions. Might be an idea...

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

Not sure the 720S depreciates more than a 911 TT or TTS... The GTx cars are a bit unique.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

The Munich dealer has two used 720S available for immediate delivery. One costs 259k EUR, the other one (only 800 km) 289k. I do not know the initial MSRP of each car but I am pretty sure that the used car prices aren't final, there is still some "air" left. I assume 250k and 280k should be possible, so while depreciation is happening, it is not extremely high (yet). For someone who wants a 720S now, this is actually quite an opportunity.

For most car dealers, used car mark up are between 15%-30%

Do the math and you will know what price they paid for the car from the original owner.

And if you look at the cars from the owner's selling side, not the dealer's asking price side, the depreciation is jaw dropping.

I am finding it interesting how many people have forgotten "normal" pre 2010 depreciation rates, there seem to be a lot of car guys who have been getting used to getting allocations of non depreciating or appreciating cars, I thought Whoopsy has been a car guy for a bit longer and can remember past his recent VIP allocations but the "jaw dropping" comment indicates otherwise. I'm interested would he still have bought his myriad of special cars if there had been the normal 15-30% annual hit ? Smiley

As far as I know Nick, I think he really gets the car he wants (and likes). Not sure he is really considering depreciation. Smiley
