Controversy Discussion - Cannonball Run - please take part

In the past, we had several attemtpts of Cannonball Run drivers passing through Germany, disrespecting all traffic laws.
I own a 996 Turbo and I'm sure I'm not somebody who drives slow.
But reading http://www.cannonballruneurope.co.uk/ and viewing the forum, I have my doubts that these people should actually have a driver's license.
Don't get me wrong: I'm not somebody who fully respects speed limits but I think that a "healthy" and "responsible" driving behaviour is still important to avoid killing yourself or innocent people.
I also wonder why people don't speed at home and come over to Germany to threat people over here.
Here's a little comment made by one of these Cannonball guys, I'm not sure if this is british humor (which I always appreciated) or just bad taste:

    In reply to:
hav they forgot who won the war, krouts every good sunbed needs them

What do you think of the Cannonball Run? Isn't the track the place to play car wars or do you think that there is no problem by doing that on public streets?
Would love to hear your opinion.

Here's a little poll for you guys:

Cannonball Run - should it be held on public streets without proper organization and official approval?
    Yes, who cares?
No, only with proper organization and official approval
    No, who needs that anyway?
No, racing should be done on the track
No, Cannonball is just for people who are rich, bored and bald.

Now let's start a passionate discussion but please, no flames and no personal attacks. Thank you.

Re: Controversy Discussion - Cannonball Run - please take pa

I am not informed as to what is happening in Europe, but it doesn't sound good. The original Cannonball Run in the USA was organized by Brock Yates of Car & Driver magazine years ago as a coast to coast loosely organized event. It was resonably safe, no one was killed that I recall, but it was heavily attacked by the police as many traffic laws were defied. Yates stopped the public road event when he felt it was getting too large and attracting to much attention and it is now run as a series of track events. He has a book out on the subject that I have seen but not read.

Re: Controversy Discussion - Cannonball Run - please take pa

Is this event different from Gumball event in the U.S.?
    Gumball 3000

Re: Controversy Discussion - Cannonball Run - please take pa

The Gumball is the successor event to the public road Cannonball; Yates has disavowed it and spoken against it. They are not permitted to use the Cannonball name.

Re: Controversy Discussion - Cannonball Run - please take part

RC, I'm with you. Although I'm no big fan of speed-limits and stuff (hey, these horses have to run sometimes!), I consider the Canonball and Gumball 'races' as totally stupid and irresponsible. I don't really care about breaking speed-limits, but those guys show no repect at all for other people. One of the best example can be seen here. Having big money (or pretending to) doesn't give one the right to do whatever he wants to. This is all about attitude...

And such events could do some damage to all sports-cars owners. Talk about bad image!

    Greetings,
    --Pierre

PS: but I confess that driving 'wide-open' on open roads must be fun!...

    Pierre...

This is exactly how I feel. I'm no friend of speed limits either and I don't want to preach to respect traffic laws. But if a Cannonball event becomes an event of solely braking the laws (and enjoying getting away with it) and not an event of having fun, driving beautiful cars and meeting interesting people, it is a farce.

    I agree with you Christian

That kind of races should not be allowed, way too dangerous!
You never know how other people are going to react when you put pressure on them by flashing them or sticking to them.
This is just about showing off anyway, these people probably don t even know what heel to toe means, they just know how to accelerate full blast in a straight line.
I believe in the sort of event that combines track and touristic rallying, like the rallye de Paris, the open road assessment is over regularity, and then you can unleash the horses on the track in a safe environment.
    Fanch.
PS> I am in Norway for a couple of days and this is actually much colder than the UK. I strongly recommend against the cabriolet
PPS> About speed limits, I break them I admit but honestly I really try to stick to the 50 kmh limit in town because ANYTHING can happen!!!
Unleash the horses on an open motorway, nodoby ahead of you or on an nice twisty road but only if you have long distance visibility. Well, that s what I try to do anyway.
    Happy and safe driving.
Remeber, it all comes down to respect to others, drivers and pedestrians

François, I fully agree with you, and I do the same. Do whatever you want when you have visibility, as long as you don't put other people in danger. When driving through a town, extra-carefulness is of course needed. Hitting a child would be a nightmare, no matter whose fault it is.

I think this is the perfect summary. Nothing to add to this.

I'm glad most of us have the same view on that topic. Makes me feel even better to be part of this community.

    55 saves lives!

Once upon a time, the Cannonball had a useful purpose as a protest against the rediculous USA national 55 MPH speed limit put in place by Nixon.

But that purpose has long since gone.

Re: Controversy Discussion - Cannonball Run - please take part

I strongly believe that our speed limits are anachronistic to say the least, and that proper driver training and more frequent and stringent tests would allow to drive in far safer circumstances without many of these stupid limitations.
I tend to drive pretty often at speeds well above the limits, and love to drive the car and not just be transported by it most of the times, therefore you might say that I have a very dynamic driving approach, even on the streets.
But I tend to use my head and choose the right moments: when I am in a traffic situation that will not put me or other people in danger, If there is too much traffic or poor visibility, I'm going to adjust the driving and speed consequently.
This means that if traffic is very low and visibility perfect, I might even do a little Cannonball of my own !
But doing it the way these people do it is far too dangerous: for starters they have to go very fast all of the time, even if traffic is high and visibility poor; plus the element of racing the others tends to make you push it too much so a crash is possible almost at every corner.

Actually if given another type of organization and adopting a totally different, more intelligent and responsible, approach an event like Cannonball could be extremely fun and interesting.

huh... What about a Rennteam.comball event accross Europe next spring/summer? Something fun and responsible? Looks like we would have quite a few interesting cars and people to join, don't ya think?
Should we start working on the idea?

Re: Controversy Discussion - Cannonball Run - please take part

    You caught my drift Pierre...
That's just what I had in mind!

    Rennteam Comball?

Oh boy, you caught me with my pants down.

I had such a thing in mind since we opened this forum and I think CR would love it too. IF we do it, we should choose a period of warm and dry weather to enjoy our babies. Around June is fine, maybe around May or July too.
We'll try to look into it, especially regarding the factory/Weissach visit. If we get enough people together, maybe we could arrange something through Porsche Travel (so nobody thinks we want to make money on this), some kind of exclusive special event...should be possible but I'm not sure how much Porsche would charge for that. And I'd love to see Ferrari, Lamborghini and whatsoever sportscar drivers too at such an event, would be great.
Maybe CR could mobilize the german Ferrari Club and I'm sure there are at least Luigi and a few other Ferrari drivers who would enjoy to join us.

But I stop dreaming now. I promise that we'll think about it and try to find a way to organize such an event. However don't be too disappointed if it doesn't work out.

    Re: Rennteam Comball?

Excellent! If I can be of any help, just let me know.
