Singer 911 with Williams F1 engineering collaboration

/* I’d love to hear what Andy Preuninger and Frank-Stefan Walliser would say after driving it. */

The 500hp air-cooled 911 is 600 pounds lighter than when it left Porsche's factory.

    Just beautiful

Re: Singer 911 with Williams F1 engineering collaboration

If Pagani made an air-cooled Porsche it would look like this!

Re: Singer 911 with Williams F1 engineering collaboration

Gorgeous, it oozes craftsmanship and detail.

Says a lot about how uniquely iconic the 911 has become in the sportscar world, no other sporstcar model in history inspires magnificent works like this.

It's also exactly twice as powerful (and only 400cc larger)  Smiley

True, ... with the possible exception of the 1957 Chevy.

Re: Singer 911 with Williams F1 engineering collaboration

Whilst of course this Williams Singer is a wonderful thing and it is truly fantastic that there are people who will spend the money creating such a thing, am I allowed to say something a bit negative ?

I find the engine a bit too overkill for a road going Porsche. I remember a few years back when I had my Mezger motor tuned to around 800hp and I met up with a pal at the airfield who had spent a lot of money having his air cooled twin turbo Mezger built and tuned by Judd on their engine dyno to 700hp. My engine was pretty smooth quite similar to stock whereas his had a horrible idle and continually hunted and was pretty nasty to drive on the road - this is kind of what this Singer seems like to me, it sound like a race engine and no doubt would need race hour rebuilds if used properly it renders the car useable only for limited types of driving, whilst this may have been the creators design brief it doesn't really fit the ethos of Porsche road car engines IMO and if I bought a singer I would want a much smoother factory Motronic lump, 4 litre tuned to 420PS and reving to 7500rpm. yes

I doubt the singer engine will be nasty to drive, these guys are all about the drive feel...

Re: Singer 911 with Williams F1 engineering collaboration

With Singer you get a choice - like between a basis 911 and a RS - but on a whole different level. Plus I believe those who buy this cars for aesthetic reasons will also buy them because they are in love with all details and will appreciate the efforts to build this technique over the daily drivability. It bit of a handful to drive is refreshingly different in these days where you can basically jump in any car for a testdrive and be "familiar" from the start....

I would take it over any hypercar even if it would depreciate...

The factory Motronic 3.6L (with Varioram) made 285hp.  The 3.8RS made 300hp.  Going to be more than difficult to get an NA 4.0L with factory-type Motronic to make 420hp.  More than likely this requires a significantly re-worked motor with individual throttle bodies, lightweight internals, etc.  Getting 105 hp per Litre in NA Air-Cooled motor is way more difficult than the factory 79 hp per Litre.

The big displacement factory motors also had a pretty lazy character - I bet this Singer is fantastic and exciting in a way that Motronic could never dream to be...

Re: Singer 911 with Williams F1 engineering collaboration

If I have the money for this car and engine, it's one of a significant stable of cars. So I have to do a refresh (not rebuild) of the engine at worst every 100 hours which probably equates to 5,000km? Which is probably every 2 years? Not a big deal.

The difference between a 9,500 RPM and a 7,500 RPM redline is massive in terms of enjoyment and feel. I'm buying that car exactly for THAT feeling.

I really don't think the Singers will depreciate. In fact I'd dare say that in 10 years they might be worth a lot more than they are now. What Singer is doing to the 911 is nothing short of historic.

Re: Singer 911 with Williams F1 engineering collaboration

I like what these guys are doing too (and Ruf):
