    Right hand front tyre

    Hi
I have just had my 2003 Cayenne S put through it's first registration check as it is 12 months old tomorrow.
To my amazement the right hand fron tyre was worn through to the canvas on the inside edge.(not visible from the outside)
The dealer says that this is a manufacturing suspension alignment problem from the factory that Porsche know about and they have replaced the tyre free of charge.
What concerns me is that I should have been notified of this problem as it is of a very serious nature.
I could have had a blow out within the next few Kilometers with serious consequences.

If you have an early Cayenne S please make sure you check this out.
I'm not sure if it applies to LHD vehicles but I shought I should let you know anyway.

    Cheers

    M

    Re: Right hand front tyre

It is an issue everywhere. There is a service bulletin, #4495, Front Axle Alignment Specifications, that makes note of a "settling" nature of the front suspension and how it should be realigned after 200 km, or 120 miles.

There is not a recall so no notifications are being sent. Most dealers are handling it the way yours did by replacing the front tires at their expense. Not all though. There are a few dealers that have made the customer pay for tires and alignment!

    Re: Right hand front tyre

    Thanks for the news.
I am still annoyed at this as I came home from my country property on Sunday through the mountains in the wet and was racing with a guy in an M3 (whom I beat). If that tyre had let go we could have been seriously damaged. I wonder how many cars or people have been damaged because of this?

    Re: Right hand front tyre

So you now have three tyres with a certain mileage and a brand new one?
Wow, what a great solution dealers are applying: they should have changed at least two tyres, don't you agree?

    Re: Right hand front tyre

I have already replaced the left front due to a punture on a large rock.
That was when I realised that the gel supplied for puncture repair is useless.
I now have a space saver...but had to disconnect and remove the sub woofer from the rear tool compartment. I can hardly tell the difference in the sound quality.
As a matter of interest....the space saver fits perfectly over the top of the spare battery. Very neat.

Thank you for posting this. I thought that was the case. I had picked up that it was any two of the following:
      - Subwoofer (large to go over the battery, small to fit under the space saver spare)
      - Space saver spare
      - Second battery
    Then I saw two things:

      - a post from someone who had traded their '03 on a later year because they wanted the space saver spare and their dealer told them it couldn't be done with the second battery

      - KBB.com Cayenne optional equipment which notes the second battery with the space saver spare was N/A
You can't beat hearing from someone that actually did it. Thanks again.

If I'd live in Australia, Russia, large desert areas, etc. I would definetely opt for the rear hatch spare wheel carrier (sorry, don't know the english word for it) because you get an additional FULL spare. I know it doesn't look too good but I think safety is more important.
The emergency tire kit is only good for little damage like bolts, nails, etc. which happens often on the street. It is useless when the tire is punctured by very sharp rocks, metal, etc.

    Re: Right hand front tyre

The spare wheel holder option is now available in Australia, but it is very costly and I think.........very annoying to use as it must be moved before you can open the rear window or door.
I think I will buy a spare wheel and take it with me in the cargo area when I go on long trips on gravel roads.
