source by auto motor & sport:

    450 HP
    DFI
    7 gear PDK or manual

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

Sorry mate. Old and updated info.

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

    I hope you/autosport are correct, 450hp & pdk.

The OPCs here in Germany are still telling us that pdk will not be available at launch for the GT3s or Turbo, maybe later when its a bit stronger and can handle the additional power. This would also fit in with the German text on autosport, depends how you read it.

They could be testing pdk at the ring but that doesnt mean it will be available at launch.

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

they cannot introduce the FL GT3 and TT WITHOUT the PDK... they simply won't be able to have a good launch and sell their cars, especially that when they see that the bulk of FL 997s are being ordered with PDK... if the FL GT3 and TT are out without the PDK, people will simply wait for that extra 3-6 months to get the PDK, especially when they see the performance differential (997 C2S does 0-60 in 4.3 with PDK and SportChrono versus 4.7 in manual)... the FL GT3 with PDK 0-60 time may drop to 3.8 and the TT to 3.4!!!

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

Apparently, due to very reliable sources straight from Porsche in Stuttgart, I have heard that the FL Turbo will get the PDK but not the GT3.
Which from my POV makes perfect sense...

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

old pics....if no pdk than the will be history very soon.

    I agree, GT3 is a pure drivers' car - doesn't need PDK.

    Why?

    Track cars use sequential gearboxes
    PDK is a sequential gearbox
GT3 as a track car can have PDK...

To me, pure driver's car need PDK, just like nowadays racing car.

even when the PDK is the future??

even if PDK noticeable faster in the track?

i dont know you guys, but i want PERFORMANCE, i love the 6speed, but with this big difference i will take the future.

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

Yes PDK is a sequential gear box but it cannot really be compared to a racing sequential gear box where one still has to use the clutch pedal for take off and downshifting.. PDK is as smooth as an auto box, just shifts quicker. A racing sequential gear box makes your neck crack each time u dont use it at the exact rpm...
a racing gear box doesnt have a D mode where one can just cruise off. Just cant be compared with each other.
From my point of view a sporty stick shift like in the GT3 is closer to a racing sequential gear box than PDK, which to me is much closer to a perfectly working automatic gear box than it is to a sporty one. 0-60 times dont count when it comes to track performance...

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

For me, PDK is a great gearbox and the version for GT3/Turbo will be even greater. Which means, that this will be a perfect solution for many people. So give it a chance, and wait a litlle bit... The perfect solution will be a choice between PDK for "more modern" and inovative customers and stick for the hardcore enthusiasts.

I suppose with modern electronics the PDK can be fine tuned in such a way as to cater for GT3 needs.
See the diffrence between normal PDK and Sport Plus and you can see what could be achieved further.

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

yeah but there is only a difference between normal PDK and sport plus in the automatic mode... which kinda makes my point...
Dont get me wrong, i would welcome a double clutch sequential gear box too. It would just have to be sportier than a DSG or PDK. Even the older SMG and the latest Ferrari F1 gear boxes (Scuderia) are a lot sportier than the latest generation double clutches IMO...

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

Talking to the sales guy in my OPC about GT3 MKII I was told that it won't have the PDK option and will only come as manual.
He went on to say that PDK will be available for FL GT2 but not for the TT which really doesn't make any sense at all as GT2 is basically the more powerful version of TT but only rear wheel drive. So if GT2 can cope with PDK why not offering it on TT?!!

Hopefully PDK and Manual will both be the future, otherwise I will buy an old car (again).

As for track performance, I have seen no tests that show PDK being faster on the track (only on the dragstrip). Please provide evidence that PDK is faster on a circuit.

What does "sportier" even mean in this context? Any double-clutch system like PDK is going to be more effective at transition and at shifting without a loss or gap in power delivery than a single-clutch system like Ferrari's F1 gearbox or other marque SMG (like BMW).

You have to bear in mind that with dual clutches the PDK is not going to behave like a single clutch system, and if you're knocking off "sportiness" points because of the absence of a jarring interruption of power delivery like we've all grown to expect from single-clutch gearboxes then I think you're missing the point.

I suspect the evidence will be forthcoming. It makes perfect sense that PDK will be faster than a manual and while I agree that I'd love to see the numbers, I'd be very surprised - no shocked - to see slower times with PDK. Its also a feature that is likely to be a greater advantage to more novice drivers. They will probably see the most influence on smoothness and lap times.

Are there N'ring times for 997.2 with and without PDK anyone?

I didn't want to mention it without proof, but the only (informal) results I saw indicated the manual being slightly faster. As we all know, it's difficult to have a perfect test on the Ring where all variables (other than gearbox) are equal.

The possible explanations for this are that the PDK is heavier and it has more internal friction (hence the slightly lower top speed with PDK).

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

    pdk > manual

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

wow - if you're right Grant then it seems to me the PDK will need further improvements to lessen the friction and/or weight.

I'd love to have a PDK on the track. There are times - with a stick now - that I don't shift into a preferrable gear because I'd only be using that gear for a relatively short while and have to go back again. So I compromise and either hover near rev limit, or accept lower torque (depending on whats next in the course). I imagine with PDK there will be less reason (without a steering or power interruption) to compromise.

Of course I say all this realizing my novice status. Am I thinking too much here?

Re: 911 GT3 MKII [Photo Update by ams]

since i am not a serious racing driver, having to experience and experiment with differen shifting point adds more fun and learning curve into driving on track...

having PDK will be great and very useful when pursuing best lab times, but using a stick will be 'old school' and keeping my left leg useful during a drive...
