James Bond's crashed DBS sells for Pounds200k

    Bond sells ruined DBS

The Aston Martin DBS that crashed and sank to the bottom of Lake Garda during filming for the new Bond film Quantum of Solace has been bought by a collector for Pounds200,000.

The DBS was destroyed in early April, when the driver - an Aston Martin engineer - lost control of the car during a torrential race storm. The Aston smashed through the barriers and sank to the bottom of Lake Garda, with the driver unconscious inside. He regained consciousness when the car hit the bottom of the lake, and swam 150 feet to the surface with only minor injuries.

The car was, unsurprisingly, a complete write-off, but that didn't dissuade the unnamed enthusiast from paying some Pounds64,000 over the list price of a brand new, working DBS for a piece of battered Bond memorabilia. Maybe he's hoping it'll buff out.

This news has us even more confused about the whole credit crunch, though.

On the one hand, we're being told that we can't have a Hyundai Genesis Coupe because it's too pricey, but on the other we're told that the Ferrari California is sold out until 2010, almost all the Aston One-77s have already been bought and that a smashed-up, rusty lump of soggy DBS is worth Pounds200k. What's going on?

Wonder what he'd pay for a ruined One-77?

HaHa! Saw on TV where an original Star Trek 6 foot model of the Starship Enterprise used on the TV show went for us$500,000 at auction.

    People are crazy!

Is this possible--wouldn't you get the bends at 150 feet without some pretty specialized scuba gear?

Re: James Bond's crashed DBS sells for Pounds200k

No, you would get the bends if you were breathing from a scuba tank at this depth and the oxygen in your blood adjusted to the increased amount of pressure (amount of oxygen increases but is compressed and therefore takes up the same amount of space). If you were to rapidly ascend to the surface, the oxygen in your blood would expand to a possibly deadly level. If you slowly ascend to the surface it allows the oxygen in your blood to adjust safely. If he had taken a breath at this depth and held it all the way to the surface, his lungs may have ruptured as that air expanded. Instead you must exhale as you ascend to avoid this danger. For the test driver, the oxygen in his blood was compressed as he descended the 150 feet and then expanded to the same safe pressure that it had been at the surface. The amount of oxygen in his blood would have remained the same and therefore there was no danger, as long as he didnt hold his breath (if he even had a breath, car may have been completely filled with water by the time he came to).

normal people dont even go down 150ft with a professional scuba diving equipment. only experienced people do...
and he just woke up in the car and easiliy swam to the surface??
sounds less realistic than a ferry tale IMO...

Re: James Bond's crashed DBS sells for Pounds200k

The story is quite ubelievable but who am I to say it isn't true. To think that the stunt driver was knocked unconcious from the crash, remained so while the car filled with water as it sank 150ft to the bottom of the lake, then miraculously regained consciousness, escaped the car (including perhaps a racing harness/roll cage), and swam 150ft to the suface is remarkable.
By the way 150ft is not extremely deep for scuba diving, many tourist outfits will take you to that depth after about 15-20 dives (if you're certified). It obviously depends on the location.

that's why he is a stunt man

If you have lungs full of air from the surface, IOW, your last breath was above water, you can ascent 150 feet without injury.

There are free divers who follow a line down and back up 300 or 400 maybe 500 feet on a single breath of air.

If you have lungs full of air from breathing scuba at 150 feet, and must ascend rapidly, you _must_ exhale as you go up or you'll probably die by the expanding air bursting your lungs. You would also probably get the bends since your blood has not had time to eliminate pressurized gasses that have accumulated over time at depth.

Though risky, Go up slowly from 150 and you'll be fine if you follow the decompression guidelines.

Maximum safe operational depth for normal recreational scuba is 100-130 feet.

Re: James Bond's crashed DBS sells for Pounds200k

ok thanks for that but as you say "go up slowly" and if u took your last breath of air etc... the guy crashed the car into the lake and woke up when touching the ground...
wanna tell me he stil managed to go up slowly AND remembered to take a deep breath before hitting the wall and then going into the water?
i mean i dont wanna say thats not possible but i guess its not possible... or is it? dunno know...

Re: James Bond's crashed DBS sells for Pounds200k

_IF_ your last breath of air was taken _before_ you went into the water go up FAST! No need for exhaling nor a slow ascent.

If the guy was knocked unconscious he would drown. When you get knocked out, but are still breathing, you will exhale and breath in whatever's there: air or water.

Re: James Bond's crashed DBS sells for Pounds200k

    Journey into the theoretical.
At 150 feed or about 5 atmospheres of pressure, the original air in the car should be about 1/5th the original volume. This would be assuming that when water had finished pushing in around every door and window gasket to eqalize pressure, it then leveled out and left the gaskets capable of keeping the air in the car. (No air would escape while the water entering with much greater force) So perhaps? the driver had air from neck level to the roof of the car and interior to exterior pressure had been equalized. He could then take a breath, open the door, exit and head to the surface while exhaling. Exposure to breathing at depth too minimal for the bends.
Don't want to try this myself, but it seems potentially plausible.!?
If anyone thinks he opened the door and escaped prior to reaching the bottom, I disagree. While the vehicle was sinking, the exterior pressure far exceeded the interior pressure making the opening of the door quite impossible.
Only other theory I can think of would have the driver escaping the vehicle as soon as it hit the water meaning he was driving an Aston in the rain with the window open or had time to open the window before impact. Seems far less likely than where I started trying to match the reported facts.
    Theories, I love that game.
