Yes he had other issues. Big issues. Give him a ride next time.

+1 but give him a ride to the shrink instead

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

is this aftermarket and if yes does it affect Mclaren warrenty, or are they fine with it. Have you heart anything of the Mso exhaust for the 720s. I think they come upt with something.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

I too was interested in a MSO option but got the following on July 13 from Niklas (who I believe is the son of Mike Flewitt the MD) Senior Client Services Exec.

I have just now followed up with MSO and the person responsible for Aftersales parts – they are looking into the possibility at the moment, but as of yet, there is nothing confirmed. I cannot speak on if one is to be released for the future, but we are definitely looking into the possibility.

So I decided to not wait and did my research on the available options and settled on the above. I was told that as long as the cats are left in place then there are zero warranty issues, the exhaust post cats doesn't do anything for performance (altho' hopefully it may improve throttle response slightly) but hopefully should give the car a better voice. Our Euro/Austrailian (and possibly other markets) engines have exhausts with valves (both sport and normal non sport systems) and the ECU seems to keep the valves shut most of the time, the only time they open seems to be at high revs and wide throttle openings where maximum flow is needed to produce the 7XXhp. The American market cars have no valves.

There is some 720 exhaust chat on the thread below with pics where you can see the difference in valved and non valved systems.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

Thanks for the information. What does it mean performance wise, american market have no valves vs eu cars having valves. Is there some disadvantige of our Eu cars with valves vs the non valves, or is it just the sound of the exhaust affected. One would think non valves exhaust have some more unrestricted airflow / and less backpressure

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

I think it will have no effect on performance the valves are open when the throttle is wide and boost is up so when you nail it you are getting the same exhaust as the US cars. If you listen to the vid below of US models normal v sport exhaust you can hear than even the normal is a lot noiser than our valved units, this kind of confused me when I picked my car up (with normal exhaust) as it was much quieter than this vid it took a while for me to fathom out the valve addition policy for our country's/EU noise regs.

isn't a certain backpressure good for torque ?

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    BjoernB:

I did ponder the whole exhaust thing as it seems a bit weird to sell the same exhaust but just with valves to quieten it down for certain markets. If you look at the pics of the standard non sport system below you can see non valved US spec first then valved Euro spec they are exactly the same except for the valves.

From the pics it is obvious that when valves are open a high degree of gases can escape "straight out" without having to go through the muffler.

The theory is that some backpressure should be good for the engine when running off boost so theoretically the vlaved exhaust "should" have more off boost/low boost torque until the backpressure reaches a critical point where presumably the engineers have programmed the flaps to open and the free flow provides the best/highest power curve.

In reality I bet there is no difference Smiley

Is that nor more the case on normal aspirated engine rather than on turbo engine, where you want to move the turbo as free as possible (quick spool up, quick response)

I thought that for example the akra exaust on the 991.1 Gt3 Rs had less power than the original one as of lake to a certain backpressure

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

@tb993tt the picture you posted shows the normal exaust Eu and Us version or the sport exaust

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

So the pic above is the normal exhaust in non valved (US version) first pic and valved (Eu Version) second pic.

The Sports exhaust is below in US version non valved first pic and Euro version second pic with valves (they look slightly different in the pics below but I think one is upside down to the other)

Interesting screenshot from the McLaren "720 engine" video, this is the sport exhaust on the engine dyno, is that with or without the valves ?

McLaren does a great job when it comes to straight line performance, I never understood why the others (Porsche, Lambo, Ferrari) can't get even close. OK, the GT2 RS is a different beast but for a price.

They are certainly not the fastest thing out there that's for sure!

My Aston is quite.......slow. But when I am in it, don't quite care, the V12 exhaust note is glorious and that's all it counts.

Most people in the UK are treating the GT2RS as a collector car noone is putting any miles on them the C16 allocation was quite small and seems quite separate from other markets I guess this is what Porsche wanted for the UK and they've got it....... they have managed to dispose of many lifelong Porsche fans on the way but hey the new wave are buying and selling lots of stuff at the dealers and of course will carry on doing so right through the next interest rate rises and/or recession Smiley

Living in Cyprus now with the RHD, I've been looking for a good sports car to purchase from the UK, and I've always been a 911 guy, but I can't swallow paying any of these prices for a 911.  I'll have to look for an alternative...
