    997 Facelift Manual Box

    I can remember reading some posts that a few members had bought the facelift 997 with the manual transmission. Any major differences in the feel of the clutch and shift? How is the hill hold feature? Tokyo is incredibly hilly and I am sure that would be a welcome feature should I get another 997 with a manual box....Interested in your opinions please!

    Will tell you tomorrow. Mine will come with the short shifter which I already have on my C2.

    Had mine for about six weeks now....

    To be honest i can't feel a great deal of difference from the old car (But i have not driven one of them for a while). IMO it is the best manual gearbox in the world. I love how perfectly it slots the gears....

    The hill assist is ok but, don't like me think that it is the same as in the Cayenne manual.. The Cayenne system will hold the brake until the clutch is engaged, this system will only hold the brake for about 3 seconds (which is long enough for even your gran to do a hill start !)

    I can remember also driving a PDK at a launch event. Although i liked the new gearbox, climbing into a FL manual felt like climbing back into your favorite armchair (Home sweet home)

    I would be the last person to put down the Porsche gearbox, but there are other cars out there with extremely precise and wonderfully short shift actions.

    For all you gearbox lovers, please try a Civic Type-R and a SportKa/StreetKa. Both these cars have one big benefit over Porsche - their shift action is just perfect after a very short time, whereas in the Porsche you really have to heat the whole thing up to get a result.

    FWIW, when the 997 came out the shifter and gearbox were universally acclaimed in all the car mags. If I remember correctly words like "perfection" were often used.

    Sooooo, there's not much room for improvement.

    I don't know about "hill-hold" but: you won't be disappointed with shift and gearbox.

    I drove the M3 DCT yesterday and was very impressed, by all reports the PDK is even better - I guess I will go PDK after all - just wanted to know if there was any big change.

    I agree with you. The 911 gearbox/clutch systems is fine functionally, but other cars including the ones you mentioned and the Golf (European version) whose clutch action and gear change is buttery smooth and very precise in a way that the 911 is not.

    Sorry to contradict you but my Golf (the other car!) is not buttery smooth and never has been on either gearbox (new gearbox due to material problems at 40,000 km). The loan Golfs whilst in for the 1)gearbox rebuild 2)subsequesnt relacement under warranty werent the best either. My C2S when warmed up is far, far smoother as was my previous C2S and the 996 C2 although to be fair the Getrag box had a heavier shift action than the Aisin in the 997S. Best box ever? I my experience a well used Ford Escort mark 2 for the Brits out there

    Its true that the Japs do make nice boxes. I drove the new M3 recently and was not impressed with the feel of the shift at all - is it just me? I think I have been driving Porsches for too long - used to a decent change and now nothing else works : )

    "Nice Gearbox" is all about personal taste. I don't buy that on particular style or design of gearbox is 'nice' fore everyone, or is necessarily some standard to which others should be measured. I know the Honda and Toyota gearboxes I test drove in the mid 90's were way to stiff for me, and I didn't like the clutch engagement point at all (not as bad as a late 80's Ford Escort, but still not as the way I liked the VW Golf gearbox).

    As opposed to the 996, the 997's gearbox is made by is Aisin

    Indeed, the M3 gearchange has always been a little off. A little too soft on the lever and a bit vague for the clutch -presumably because of the hydrualic assist (I believe many people remove the diverter valve)
