    Retrofit Multi-function steering Wheel

    Hi

    Just about to pick up my new toy, 2006my C2 Cab. One thing missing that I ideally would have liked is the multifunction steering wheel. Is this something that can be retrofitted, and if so, how scary/costly is it to do?

    Also anyone one in Englandshire got a good contact for supply/fit of a Dension Gateway 500 and bluetooth module, I'm based in Cambridge

    I had the same problem when I picked up the cayenne, forgot to ordr MF s/wheel. At the end of the day I paid the dealer Pounds2,038 for it to be retrofitted, parts & labour. So yes it can be done but I ended up aying sixfold

    Ouch. Guess I'll be staying with the reaching down for the controls method then.....

    I like reiterating this formula for estimating the cost of Porsche retrofits:

    Imagine a cost you would pay but would be verrrry p*ssed to have to pay.

    Take that number and multiply by three.

    Result is estimated cost of actual retrofit.




    Oddly, a only few retrofits are reasonable; if I remember correctly PSE is an example.

    From what I understand the retro fit is not too difficult - the cost is in getting the replacement steering wheel and in some cases a new airbag. There have been some folks who have done this either on this board or one of the others (maybe 6speed) - try a seach and see if anything pops up.

    The multi function wheel is only be fitted to the 997/987 series 1 (manual or tip) with the triangular airbag steering wheel and PCM . The new gen 2 cars have either the same item as the series 1 (if its a manual car ) or a new design specific if you have PDK. There is no option or possibility to fit the multi function controls to a sport (round airbag) steering wheel on a manual car. If you already have the standard (trinagular airbag) wheel then you have two choices.
    1. Buy just the parts (new switch faceplates, control module and a loom) install the parts and get your local Porsche agent to activate.
    2. Buy a complete new wheel with all the looms and buttons installed, fit in place of your existing wheel and refit the original airbag.Then get your local agent to activate the controls.

    If you have a round airbag wheel currently , then you need a new multi function steering wheel and airbag.

    Fitting takes about 30-40 mins with about half an hour tech time to activate.

    You can pick up new/ used multi function wheels on e bay for about 300 usd.

    Well, getting your wheels painted by a local high-end wheel paint shop will be significantly cheaper than factory painted... so there's that in the other direction. Only on those things the dealer has tight control of the required parts... is there a risk of much higher retrofit costs.

    Doing the install yourself helps.

    Thanks for all that, sounds like I may well give it a whirl. There is a new wheel on ebay at the moment, but without the airbag.

    I'll keep you posted with the progress
