Anyone have experience with APR chips?

Hi folks, so I am here sulking with the fact that I just sold my M3 yesterday. As I told my wife, it was the longest relationship I've ever had - having owned it for almost 9.5 years. Of course, she responds with "Well, if you're lucky, you can have a longer relationship with me."

So anyway, I am surfing the net and went to the APR website. My wife's A4 has the APR chip and the difference is quite dramatic. I have even proven it by doing my Gtech pro runs.

According to the website, they can have a 987 using 93 octane gas producing 321hp/289lb-ft. With 91 octane for you poor California folks, 315hp/282lb-ft. But they are selling this at a whopping $999.

So, does anyone here actually have any experience with these chips for Porsche's? Or any other tuner's chips for that matter? I am having a hard time believing that these chips can take a 280hp/236lb-ft stock to those levels. Effectively a 41hp/46lb-ft INCREASE! For turbo cars, it's easier to believe. But for normally aspirated cars?

Re: Anyone have experience with APR chips?

You wife's A4 probably has a turbo charger, making it very simple to increase horsepower dramatically with a chip.

It is very hard to reliably increase hp/torques on the boxster engine without going to a supercharger and/or seriously hurting long term engine durability.

Re: Anyone have experience with APR chips?

So no one else has had experience with these chips???

I really would not recommend chipping the Boxster engine. If it isn't quick enough for you then I'm afraid you bought the wrong car in the first place. Buying a different car would probably be cheaper than replacing a blown Boxster engine

Yeah, but I'm one of those who think that blowing an engine would be an "opportunity" to get a new one installed! I just don't like the idea that I have an existing engine that is effectively "detuned" by Porsche coming out of the factory to justify their marketing purposes...

Re: Anyone have experience with APR chips?

Why not just swap in a 3.8 and avoid the whole blowing up in the first place. ($$$)

or simply buy a Carrera S where the 3.8 engine and all the performance you can ever use (in the real world) comes as standard. Probably be cheaper than trying to fit a 3.8 engine in a Boxster, too.

Re: Anyone have experience with APR chips?

I don't have experience with APR, but I do have experience from other tuning companies, and I think the figures you post are over-the-top. I would not expect more than 10-15HP from re-programming the ECU on a normally aspirated engine.

Anyway, if you want to get bitten by the tuning bug, then I would recommend the below formula to increase the power and to reduce the weight:
    1. Change the standard flywheel to a lightweight aluminum flywheel.
    2. Re-program the ECU.
    3. Change the air filter to a "sport" air filter

It does make a huge difference performance wise... and the fun factor is up a few points thanks to a much more responsive engine.

Re: Anyone have experience with APR chips?

Changing the flywheel alters how the car drives and it makes it feel "unnatural". "Re-programming the ECU" = isn't that the same thing as doing the chip? Ok, APR is probably not "swapping chips", but they are essentially changing the ECU. Lastly, a sport filter isn't going to make much of a difference. I have had tremendous experience in forced induction and other "performance mods". People who say they can "feel" a difference by say, putting in a K&N filter or similar, are just trying to justify their experience. If you put it on a dyno, however, it does make a difference. Albeit a small one, but not enough for you to feel it.

I posted on the APR chips in the event that someone actually has had first hand experience with them. It doesn't seem like the case. And I don't want to be anyone's guineau pig. Their HP claims are outrageous for the Porsches. But for my wife's Audi, they were spot on by my measurements - pretty impressive performance gains for my wife's Audi A4 1.8T actually...

Re: Anyone have experience with APR chips?

Interesting, I don't find my Boxster "unnatural" after changing the flywheel... quite the opposite. It feels much more responsive and agile... which something I find "natural" for a sports car

I agree that the air filter won't do much by itself, but in combination with a new ECU (or chip) it makes sense.
