KMM:They shouldn't have set such high expectations with the show car. This thing could be some Japanese sports car, or a Corvette, or whatever...
Replace the kidney grille with Mercedes' Panamera style grille and it could be another Mercedes. There's a lot of SL in that design, including the rear section. The interior, outside of the digital instrument panel, seems more reflective of Toyota, as many expected, than BMW. Plus it looks dated compared with the current interior trends of Audi and Porsche, for example. One is not even sure of the market anymore since sports cars are not selling strongly compared with incredible growth in SUVs and crossovers.

Some reviews I've read call it "beautiful" and "a stunner". Probably it looks better in real life, although I don't find the new car ugly.
I am indifferent to the Z4 because In would never consider it. But people who look for this type of car will find it more than adequate in looks and performance.
I expect it to be a better value than a Boxster and the choice of 6-cylinder engines might be a decider.

SciFrog:BMW designers lost the plot somewhere around 2000...
Yes, that's about right. I thought my E34 530i was perfect and would have kept it had the interior not come totally unglued in the Florida heat, and the V8's nikasil liners resist sulfur better.
"Don't worry about avoiding temptation, as you grow older it will avoid you" Churchill
Probably the normal models without the ///M-look, as shown on the intro models, will be more attractive and more proportional without the excessive orifices, appendices etc of the Z4M.
However, I think younger buyers around the world are probably attracted by this "Orientalised" and definitely much more than people who grew up with the 80s-90s German cars.
The re-introduction of soft top is welcome.

It actually looks quite good live but it doesn't have a "proper" engine. A small n/a V8 in this thing would be amazing...

A small straight six like back in the days would also be nice. But these times are over, we will see neither unfortunately.
We're at the point where you can be the fastest or just sound like you're the fastest.
The secret of life is to admire without desiring.
NBR Supertest time for the new BMW Z4 M40i 7:55.
IMO this very good for what is basically an unpretentious recreational open top car fitted with a stronger engine.
It will definitely be very good value compared to the very expensive €70.000 Boxster S especially given the latter's 4 cylinder engine.
Porsche cars except the 911s (especially the GTs) are not as desirable anymore given their heritage. Blame the VW Group accountants for this who view PAG as a cash cow to offset their many losing projects.
