Oil Levels in Gen 1 997 versus Gen 2?

Question for Rennteamers. The factory manual for my 997S states that I should have 9 qts. (or 8.5 litres) of oil (including a filter change) for an oil change, but in the past, when I got an oil change, the oil level was always above the factory set "top limit".

I get tech updates from the Porsche Club of America site, and the senior tech expert for 997's said that even 10 quarts of oil if okay for a 997AS.

Therefore, unless Porsche advises otherwise, I will attempt to fill with 10 quarts of the specific Mobil 1 grade specified (that's what they filled it a few weeks ago when I took it in for an oil change.

For the Gen 1 997, oil levels are measured with the engine off. I understand the Gen 2 997 does this with the engine idling. Does anyone know what the oil capacity is for the 997 Gen 2? Is it 10 qts., or 9 qts ?

If the manual says 9 quarts why would you put 10 in? Better to fill slightly low and top off if necessary. It's better than overfilling.

Agreed. I have been draining the oil but was curious as to why the dealer would add the extra quart during the oil change and why the Porsche Club of America tech expert would say that it was okay to have as much as 10 quarts of oil in the engine (he said that the 9 qt. "limit" was only because they were worried that the oil might come out of the filler tube and get into the air intake). As the new Gen 2 has the oil levels measured while the engine is idling, and not off, I was curious as to whether it now has 10 qts. of oil. Maybe 10 qts. gives better cooling and it may be that Porsche changed the specs for the earlier Gen 1 as a result, although we are still left with the "overfill" indication on the electronic dipstick.

Of course the dealer may be charging for 10 qts, but may not be putting in 10 full qts?

Really surprised about the 10 qt thing being "ok". On my '06, I drain the oil and add about 7.5 qts, then check the level. I start the car, shut it down, wait and re-check the level. I find that having about 1 full "bar" from the top "clear" after this procedure works out to be about right as when I check the level the next day, after it sits overnight, all of the appropriate bars are filled indicating the correct oil level. As noted, better to underfill a bit, then ad doil to bring it up to the appropriate level, rather than overfilling and then draining some off. Just my .02 and I would certainly defer to the PCA "tech expert", though I'm still puzzled about the 10 qts thing.

Here's an interesting post from another forum

In any calibrated electronic gauge the readout accuracy is always half the increment interval. If the gauge is graduated to read out in whole integer increments the readout accuracy is +- 0.5. If it is showing exactly 1 on the display that reading is said to have an accuracy of 1 +- 0.5.

In the case of our electronic oil gauge, the increment interval is 0.4 liter, as this is what each segment on the display represents, and therefore the reading accuracy is +- 0.2.

If the actual oil level is exactly between two segments, say exactly between 0.4 and 0.8, that would make the oil level 0.6. And with a gauge accuracy of +- 0.2 it would flicker between 0.4 and 0.8, as in your case.

Agreed about the gauge accuracy. Each bar on the gauge is about 400 ml, so if it shows full, it could be less than 200 ml above the full mark or less than 200 ml below the full mark (my guess is that the sensor results are rounded up or down, as appropriate).

The dealer didn't charge me for 10 quarts previously, only 9. I'm thinking I will do my own oil and filter changes as soon as the warranty expires, although the PCA tech expert claims that if you keep your own records, and purchase receipts for the oil and replacement filters and the metal o-ring sealer on the drain plug that you would be okay regarding following procedures to maintain your warranty.
