    Phelps eyeing classic AM

"I've been looking at some Aston Martins and some Maseratis. It would be pretty sweet to get an old-school Aston Martin, some of the old-school (James) Bond ones. That would be sick."-Michael Phelps, in an interview with The Associated Press on his plans to buy a new car.

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

Kid's shooting too low. He can start looking at Veyron's with the kind of endorsement money he's going to be rolling in in about a month.

Michael "Moneyfish" Phelps is what they're going to start calling him.

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

Over here they are saying that Phelps is a relative unknown in his homeland. Is this true? We are a nation that love our sports man and women, and swimmers are real superstars here. If he was an Aussie, he would be absolutely massive here! Like Ian Thorpe was.

Never heard of him before the olympics. Then again, I've never followed sports. That said, he is now a household name everywhere so it's moot what he was before Beijing 2008.

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

So it's true then. THe guy won like 5 or 6 gold medal in the last Olmpic, 7 in the World Championship, and is undoubtedly the best swimmer the world has ever seen! I read somewhere that Golden Girls rerun rated higher than his Gold medal performances over there. Haha.

Nah, he wasn't an unknown - but he wasn't in the top-20 athletes in terms of notority and brand recognition.

America is a different market. No one here really cares about swimming. You'll almost NEVER see a swim meet on ESPN or Sports highlights show unless someone drowned.

It also hurt him before because American is a much bigger market with a deft of talented world class altheletes, where "masculine" sports and their heros rule the day.

Swimming is one of those "ehhh, so what" sports that gets pushed to the back of the pile like Cycling.

But Phelps, because he really did something special - he'll move up the list to the Top-10 for a short period.

Phelps became very well known in Athens in 2004. Everyone who follows swimming was following him this year. I would say Phelps is the largest Olympic star in the US today and he was big before. The guy shattered 20+ year records!

    Hee hee... good one!

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

He has to jump on everything he can right now. They're estimating that his endorsements could run as hight as $50 - 70 million this year. He's already making $3 - 5 million on endorsements before the Olympics.

Yes, he went 8 for 8 this year breaking 7 world records.

He was known before, but NO WHERE near how well he's known now. I definitely remmeber him in the last Olympics.

Hrm, 50-70 million just by endorsing things.....brb going to go get in my pool. 2012 HERE I COME!

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

I am going to bring my 7 month old baby down to the pools this weekend too! Btw guys, Phelps has been a household name in Australia since Athens. But as I said, swimming is a big sport here.

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

^^^Just to put things in perspective, Danica Patrick, a female driver in our Open Wheel Indy Car series - who's won a grand total of ONE (1) race in her 3-4 year career now was a bigger household name, celebrity, and endorser than Michael Phelps.

Oh how a little thing like winning 8 Gold Medals changes things

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

That's because Danica keeps appearing on Letterman and she drives for him lol.

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

    Michael who?!?

But that's my point ... she's done nothing thus far. Every other race for her is a DNF of some fashion and yet she was rolling in the endorsement checks.

It reminded me of that Russian female tennis player who rarely won a match, but yet she was one of the highest paid atheletic endorsers in the world and had tons of notoriety.

It was anna kournikova, but she was not even as pretty as today's Maria Sharapova, who is unlike Kournikova, is actually one of the best in the sports. Been world number one a couple of times already.

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

Anna was too busy dating Hockey stars and musicians! Btw, are you guys big on track and field? That Usain Bolt is out of this world! What a character too.

Yep, 9.69. Sub 9.70 is unheard of before. and they say Bolt could break his own record in not so distant future. Even if he doesn't, this record will last for a really long time.

He can break his own record easily, in his 100metre final he eased up in the last 10 thumping
    his chest before the line.
He held the 100metre record before Beijing.
It was the 200metre record he was going for, breaking Michael Johnsons 12 year record.

He is the first sprinter ever to take gold in the 100 and 200 metre sprints in WR time.
At only 22 (birthday yesterday) he has a big future.

Wikipedia puts his birth date at 21 August 1986 like Vinnie says.

Why else would the crowd have sung 'Happy Birthday' to him after the 200...??

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

His official site says June 30th.

I hate to argue about something so trivial, but I think it's pretty funny considering the contraversay about Chinese athletes' ages

    Re: Phelps eyeing classic AM

Swimming isn't easy but the decathalon champ deserves more press imo.
