    Re: Clutch life expectancy

How do you test out to see what condition the clutch is in and how long you have til you need to replace it?

I think that's a great question since I don't have an answer to it. Nobody else seems to either!

Perhaps the only way (especially with a self adjusting clutch like on the 997S and the 997.2 cars) is to actually open 'er up.

    Re: Clutch life expectancy

those were excatly my thoughts, with our self adjusting clutch.

    Re: Clutch life expectancy

That's why I never answered..... There is no external test, beyond taking the car out and beating on it severely, and seeing whether you get any slippage... If it grabs a 1st-gear 3600rpm launch, and it holds 6th-gear firm under full-throttle.... Then it's fine... How LONG will it be fine??? No telling, beyond looking at your odometer, reflecting upon your driving skills, and forecasting from there...

Or, drop the tranny and look at the clutch... Which, by that point, you may as well drop in a new performance clutch while you're there.....

    Re: Clutch life expectancy

The conventional test is when stopped shift into a high gear 4th/5th, accelerate to 2/3kRPM and slowly release the clutch and check slippage. A good clutch should stall the engine. Make sure there is plenty of runoff free space in front of the car...

What exactly do you mean by that Boss?

    Re: Clutch life expectancy

Full-throttle in 6th gear, a weak clutch will start to slip, RPM's will build disproportionately to speed..

Yeah, but doing that in 6th gear, while rolling, is a sure way to fry for good a weak clutch that otherwise would still last a few more miles.

Sorry - I still don't completely understand. While at a stop, you hold at full throttle, and let the clutch out . . . is that what you mean? Or do you upshift from 5th to 6th while moving at full throttle?

If I wanted to test my clutch I would find an empty parking lot and i would engage 4th or 5th gear, and while breaking and accelerating to 3-4kRPM I would see if the clutch would slip or stall. If the clutch slipps I would stop to avoid further damage unless you decide to replace it right away.
