Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

I am currently in the market for a used Boxster S as the title states. My thoughts are to get something relatively new before the facelift comes out (to benefit from decreased prices). I know the Boxster took on the Cayman's engine later in its more recent production, but wondered if there was an appreciatable diffenerence between the 2005 models and the current ones?

Should I street clear or the earliest models or any troublesome options in particular? In a best case scenerio it would be CPOd I assume.

Thanks for any input that you may have.

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

I had a 2005 987S 3.2 and have now got the 3.4. I have had no problems whatsoever with either car, if anything the earlier car seemed to have slightly better build quality as the 3.4 has a slight wind noise from the passenger door seal at speed which I didn't have with the first car and the finish of the cupholders was definitely better (aluminium effect on the 3.2, just cheap black plastic on the 3.4). Not that I ever use them.

Boot (trunk) space is better on the new car it is surprising how much resiting the oil filler has made to useable space. The engine is better on the 3.4, not only more powerful but freer breathing and revving - the variocam plus makes a big difference.

In summary both superb cars you'd be well happy with either.

Why did I change? SWMBO could not get on at all with the sports seats in the first car. An expensive mistake!

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

Had a 2005 for just over 3 years... No problems whatsoever with it... Perfect car with very very good build quality.
Sold it a few months back as it just wasnt being used... Would def take another one although think I would be looking for the 3.4

Only thing I would say is that it would probably be wiser to wait until the facelift comes out or at least is officially announced as I think this will have an impact on residuals of the earlier cars...

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

    Thanks for the input.

It would probably be best to get the 3.4 after the facelift makes its official debut.

I guess my last question has to do with reliability and cost of ownership after the warranty has expired. Is it too early to tell how the car will behave in the long term? Or do indications point to the same type of reliability as the 3.2?

    Thanks again.

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

Try to get an 06 model year over an 05 one - there were some improvements to the intermediate shaft bearing area that reuce chances of it failing. Also MY06 cars got the latest RMS seal.

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

Agree with percymon about the intermediate shaft and RMS issues, though i've no issues with either on my 2004 987S.The knack seems to be that these cars suffer less if driven regularly (at least once a week for a good run) rather than occasional summer use or short town trips. If you are buying an older 986 or 987 , its probably wise to budget for a warranty at 800 / year to cover such unforseen eventualities.

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

It is worth noting that there have been redesigns and "improvements" of the RMS/intermediate shaft design EVERY year. They have never really fixed the problem.

I was not aware of this, as I thought there was an intermediate shaft design change that remedied this problem sometime in 2005.

There was a significant update to the IMS for the 2006 model year. I monitor multiple Boxster boards and since this change I have seen no reports of any IMS failures.

There was also a mid-year change for the RMS. Since that change I have not heard of anyone having an RMS issue. That includes several friends who had a RMS leak from an older design that then received the newer seal. So while not definitive, it appears very promising.

having had an IMS failure with my 2004 996 C4s - i would definitly second this comment.

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

I've got an 06 987S with 54,000 km driven daily with absolutely no problems at all since day one. Perfect reliability. Have you found a used car Skeptical to suit your requirements?

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

Downtown have a really nice 2006 Blue on black with low mileage. Ask for Hans down there as he knows a lot about the stuff.

i initially was looking at the 2006 but got seduced by the 3.4 Cayman engine and inproved shift of the 07 and later. the additional equipment on the RS 60 was too good a deal to pass up as i would have picked up many of the options anyway.

Is anyone aware of an RMS/Intermediate Shaft failure on an '06 or newer Boxster/ BoxsterS? As I thought that the redesign in '05 remedied these problems.

I've heard of no failures since the redesign of the IMS for the '06 model year. They "beefed" it up and so far that seems to have resolved the issue.

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

They've "resolved" the issue every time the seal is updated. Like I said before, this problem is integral to the engine design itself, not the individual parts.

Re: Looking at purchasing a used 2005+ Boxster S

I imagine only time will tell as to whether it has been resolved on '06 to '08 models, but from what I have been reading is that the latest modifications are very promising in resolving the issue(s). Also, to put this into perspective, IMS failures are quite rare on pre-'06 cars. Of course, if it happens to you, rarity is of little comfort and we find many horrific accounts of it on the internet. Lastly, the newly designed 987.2 / 997.2 engines, will apparently do away with the IMS and supposedly eliminates RMS leaks, but is not a guarantee for new gremlins to emerge with the newly designed engines. If you plan on keeping your Porsche, or any car for that matter, beyond the factory warranty, perhaps it would be wise to invest in an extended warranty that covers engine replacement.
