    Re: Paint protection film

I just went though the process of selling my GT3.1 RS myself . It was an interesting learning experience , but not very pleasant .

I had big fears about the stone chips on my car , I have quite a few . To my surprise that was never a problem with any of the potential buyers . As soon as I mentioned stone chips they always said : Of course, this is normal for a 2nd hand car .

What mattered more to them was having a front lift  and  wanting new tires and brakes .

I was going to do the film on my incoming .2 RS , but after that I will most probably not bother

Frankly, in Europe, with the decent skills of painters, I would not think too much about it.

I did it here because, the sand blasting is regular and the environment is quiet aggressive...and the paint job is a disaster at best Smiley

it does cost a lot of money to cover the car which in balance you can repaint multiple times the front bumper and the bonnet and still save money at the end...

as you said, it also depends on the second hand market...

    Re: Paint protection film

I noticed that replacing the film on the front of my 997.1 GT3 was more expensive then painting the bumper.

Still I went with PPF on the whole car on my 991.1 GT3 RS.
I don't think it is economical. I did for peace of mind.

    Re: Paint protection film

For me, the benefit of a PPF - next to protecting the car of course - is also that you demonstrate to the potential buyers of the car that you are someone who cares about his cars and it therefore increases the chance of selling it.

Potentially it also slightly increases the selling price by a coupe of hundred Euros.

The problem for me with PPF is that you need to reinstall it every 4-5 years, otherwise there will be no possibility to take it off without the damage for the paint.

I know couple of people which had PPF on their cars. After removing them 5 years later they needed a re-paint. So - PPF, might work for some areas (maybe if you go fast on the highways frequently). But - for the normal car connoisseur I would not recommend

Yes,, I know. If you look at a few on a Porsche floor it’s blatant that they haven’t taken care. That’s why mention PH neutral, to be doubly safe..

Thats I am telling. If I will ever use PPF I will put it only on front bumper, hood and mirrors. That's areas that mostly suffer from stones.

    And the rocker panels :-)

I took mine off the car after 6 years as it started to yellow and on a white car made it look as though the front end was a completely different colour. After taking it off, my car looked showroom new again, with totally unblemished front paintwork.

To me the question to use it again or not, depends on how you intend to use the car and where you will keep it. If it's parked in central London on the street then yes to help with parking nudges. If it's a track car yes. If you drive very close to the car in front on motorways etc then yes. If it is a weekend toy or garage queen, then i wouldn't bother.

Also if the car has carbon parts, then worth considering covering them (Provided film not cut on car. See my previous post in this thread)

Also watch having it fitted at some of the OPC's, they often outsource to fitters that do cut it on the car ! Ask them before agreeing to the work, same applies to any fitter.

For the UK guys I always used these chaps, as their quality and service is the best  http://www.paintshield.co.uk

They even offered to fly out to Germany and do my GT3 before my factory collection.

The guy who covers my cars changed from Xpel to Suntek, because he was having difficulty with the quality consistency of the Xpel film (had to discard a large amount).

Xpel for the heavy exposure areas, and Suntek for roof etc. Xpel gives better protection and Suntek better preservation of underlying paint colour.

Thanks . Got a quote , cheaper then I enticipated. If I take it is because of heavy exposure ... so Xpel would do

    Re: Paint protection film

I believe Suntek (OEM Kodak) is a bit thinner, and installers like it because it conforms to complex shapes more easily.  It also has less visual 'orange peel.'

XPel seems a bit thicker, and perhaps more durable.

I have each on different cars, no big preference either way.

On Porsche's I recommend getting the full hood, rocks can still hit up near the hood's trailing edge.  Mid-engined Porsches will need film around the side air intakes, the front tires kick up rocks and the side vents suck them towards the body.

A quality film job is 80% your installer's expertise, so if you trust yours, go with his recommendation, I say.

    Re: Paint protection film

Yesterday the clip holding my taillight in broke and the light assembly popped out.  (Has this happened to anyone else?)  It fell out such that it was swinging around against the bumper low enough to set off the parking sensors.  Not a scratch on the rear bumper.  I'm a believer in a wrap.

    Re: Paint protection film

Pretty unusual . Lucky you had done the back bumper . I will finally go for the PPF but only the the front , mirror and around the back wheel arches

    Re: Paint protection film

Got my car back after I had Expel PPF installed .

Must say, I am not too happy with it . Can't avoid feeling like I am driving with a car that has all the factory protection on ...  In my mind I see a sofa with it's plastic cover, an iPhone with the protective plastic on the screen when new , a  printer with the plastic on the small screen .... all things I love to take off and find the proper finish underneath .

Luckily, at least,  the PPF is not light blue !

You can actually find a few uneven marks on the plastic , you see many places where the film stops, a few gaps in the film here and there . I complained about that . They said it is impossible to be 100% . The film is '' too small '' and they have to extend it ... and on the Porsche front spoiler it is very difficult to be exact . I have a one cm gap at one place . According to them ,  still in tolerance .

Don't know how long I will keep the rubber on .

I thought that while vynil wraps are meant to be pulled and extended (with a heat gun), paint protection film shouldn't... I'm no expert though.

    Re: Paint protection film

    Hi Bud,

Uneven marks??,,, do you mean air bubbles, if so,,, they should go with time. Can take the film 8 weeks to fully settle. On the front of mine,, near the black plastic air intake blades I do have 2 tiny creases but you really have to look for them to find them.

In the UK , Reep ( and probably the rest of them ) have the .2 template to cover all of its new facelift features, so this is meant to return the best results to avoid separate cuts here and there. My GT3 is white so I do have some dirt collection on the edges, which was expected.

Would I have the PPF again,, probably, yes, but only just over a NO..

Hope it grows on you. You will definitely notice a difference condition wise on your front nose later on, it’ll be in better condition kiss..

    Re: Paint protection film

Having said all that it will help prevent smaller rock chips if they bother you.  Me I’d rather have chips so I’ll be posting in a couple months my removal of the ppf on the front of my car.  It is usually suggested to replace it after 4-5 years so it is meant to come off.  In my very limited experience, using a steamer makes it very very easy to remove.
