    996TT Tiptronic impressions?

Ordered 996TTS w/Tip, as car will be a daily commuter in urban setting, but will use car frequently for fun wkend drives. Anyone w/views on how effective Tip is in 996TT X-50 in city driving and in twisties? Seems to me that buttons on steering wheel aren't particularly ergonomic (I'm addicted to paddle shifters)....does one become more accustomed to the buttons over time? Does Tip consistently find correct gear in auto mode in spirited driving in twisties....or is manual shifting the way to go? Thx.

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

manual shifting manual shifting manual shifting is the way to go

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

Several (experienced) TT track drivers claim that the Tip does a betetr job on a fast track than the manual.

In urban use - stop and go traffic - why do you care for utmost shifting performance? The tip shifting is adaptive - it will be more sedate or more aggressive as you drive.

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

I hardly ever use the tip buttons on the steering wheel. Out on the track the tt with tip is pretty good. Apart from some lag in shifting and the added weight of the transmission, it's a great set-up. It shines in city/day to day driving though. A stick shift is much more entertaining but I hardly ever regret not getting one.

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

I would strongly recommend stick shift for overall driving pleasure and greater response in all settings - the pluses outweigh the downside of manual changes in city driving. Paddle shift is much easier to make changes wwith than using the steering wheel mounted tiptronic switches which I think will disappoint you.

The Tip in auto mode works well in track situations, insofar as being in the gear you want it in, if you drive it correctly. I've had my 01 996 TT Tip for 3 years and have run many, many PCA "Driver's Education" events at the track. When I first tried it in auto mode I was sort of disappointed, and decided the heck with it and used it in manual mode. Fast forward a couple of years, and one day I went out for a run session during a track event, and left in in auto mode by "accident". And it worked fantastically to the point that now, on the track, it is what I use.

What changed--my driving style for the main thing. Over time as my comfort and confidence level increased, I began braking less, carrying more speed and accelerating immediately after turn in. When doing that in the auto mode the Tip is always in the gear you need it to be, and actually is better than the manual mode because there is a shift delay in the manual mode.

"Spirited" driving on the street, you'll probably want to use manual mode, is my guess. In auto mode unless you're really driving hard into, through and out of the twisties, as soon as your speed levels off, the auto mode will "relax" and put you in 5th.

As far as the placement of the shift buttons, honestly, you shouldn't be shifting at the same time as dialing in so much steering that you have to move your hands from a "9 o'clock" and "3 o'clock" position. So I really do like the Tip buttons where they are as opposed to some paddle shifters.

    VK,

i loved my TT tips, i had 2 before a stick. TT sticks have a long throw so they are not optimum unless you do a short shift kit which is not as good as factory gt2/3 anyway.

i found tips great in the mountains as i upset the car less on each shift, and of course fun off the line... i never used auto, but agree that the manual shifts are kinda slow, espec. compared to a CS

PAG claims that TipS shifts are made in under 0.2s. I doubt anyone can make a manual shift w/ a 6 speed manual faster - even though they think they do it, and equipment wear notwithstanding.

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

My Opinion about the tip transmission is,, i was very much satisfied with it, after a year and a half, i felt i needed a manual. The whole story is a bout the lag. When you want to launch the car from Zero ,it is doesnt at all only after 3k RPM.
Which is a bit late when you are racing somebody.

Having that much of a power without taking off like a bullet, as if of no use.
My personal opinion, i would buy a manual transmission if i were to chose to buy the Turbo S. I think it is a great car and only deserves to be driven only in manual..

Infact I am seriuosly thinking of trading my car in for a brand new gt3.

    Have fun and good luck

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

Very helpful and much appreciated insights, guys. In an ideal world, I would opt for manual as I like choosing gears, but given SF is a city of steep hills a manual would drive me nuts for daily commuting. Sounds like Tip is very competitive w/manual in curves; I doubt I'm as adept at shifting traditional manual as many on this board, so I may actually be significantly faster in a Tip than in a manual. In any case, looking forward to car in Oct.....and 997TTS when it comes out (hopefully w/F1 transmission)

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

I have never driven a porsche automatic, but I did drive a renault laguna lately with an automatic gearbox you could shift "manually"... I know that it can't be compared, but I have a question about driving automatics in manual mode.
When I shifted, it felt like it took the car seconds... (maybe only a second, but it seemed to take hours) before the car shifted. so: press the stick, wait a second, and... vrooommm... the gear changes. Is this normal? I mean, when you want to shift, you want to shift now, and not a second later... is this the same in porsche's tiptronics, or does it shift the moment you push the stick? Thanks in advance,
    -Joost-

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

Therre definitely is a delay - how much is psychologiacal and how much mechanical is debateable. It also depends , as mentioned by others, how you are driving at the time i.e aggressive or sedate. Add the inevitable elemtent of turbo lag, and you get for most enthusiasts an inferior experience to having a manual. BTW I am not trashing anyone who goes for the tiptronic - each to his own.

.2 secs is 33% slower than the Stradale at .15 sec

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

of course if you are always in rush hour traffic, and you are an old man, then by all means, get the tiptronic.

otherwise, the TT is a racecar for the road. 6speed manual, and no friends laughing behind your back.

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

You do what works for you, either way a Porsche is a Porsche, a REAL sports car.

m3 smg2 is at 0.08 sec.. thats like 100% faster..

    Re: 996TT Tiptronic impressions?

While I agree that TT MUST come with manual to drive better and enjoi more, TT is by no means racecar. Its a supercar, but I would take rearwheel Porsche 911 over 911TT for racing on track anyday. Of course you suppose to understand/feel the difference only if you studied the racing driving...
