    Warning Message "Service in 28 days"

    So my car is approaching 10k miles and this message popped up "Service in 28 days". What is supposed to be done here? The manual says "Service Indicator. Bring the vehicle in for service no later than after the distance/time shown has elapsed. However, it is the intervals in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet that are decisive".

    Is this for an oil change? I'm confused since my Maintenance booklet says that the first oil change is due at an unusually long 20k miles.

    If this IS for an oil change, I usually do my own oil changes. Does this message eventually go away? Or is there a way for me to turn it off? On my wife's Audi, the manual gave instructions on how to turn it off, but I don't see any such thing in the Boxster manual.

    How old is your car? Servicing is 20,000 miles or two years whichever comes first. It sounds like ascheduled service, doing it yourself will cost you more in loss of residual value for not having stamped official service history than you would save in doing it yourself. If you refer to the service book, there is more than just an oil change, various checks, including the biannual body check have to be carried out. If your car is under 4 years old (assuming you lucky guys have a 4 year warranty unlike us poor sods that just get a miserly two years), you would kiss goodbye to your remaining warranty, also. Check with your dealer before ignoring this service reminder.

    Remember that the brake fluid change needs to be changed every 2 years so these service interval indicators also count down the months till the next one of those becomes due.

    My car is 2 years old and has approx 10k miles. The confusing this is that the service manual states 20k miles, but yet the car is stating differently. I suppose this is why the service manual also states in the last sentence "However, it is the intervals in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet that are decisive".

    Here in the US, we do get the 4 year warranty. By law here in the US, they cannot void the warranty just because someone else performs service on a car. That sucks if the UK has different laws on that!!!

    Like dreamcar said, it's 2 years or 20k miles, whichever comes first. Doesn't matter if you only did 10k miles. The brake fluid still must be changed and the engine oil can lose viscosity over time, although this problem is less accentuated with fully synthetic engine oil (like Mobil 1) AFAIK.

    So your service becomes due depending upon mileage OR time elapsed

    I just had the same thing on mine. It's timed to 2 years here. Just had it done yesterday and had the warranty extended another year. Thankfully nothing was found to be wrong with it apart from a scheduled fix for the windblocker thingy.

    My dealer, from whom I purchased the car from, wants to charge me $76 to reset the light! Their worry is that some people take their cars to their local garage and then take it to the them to reset the light. I agree that this would not be fair. But for us "enthusiasts" who like to bond with the car, it is outrageous. Essentially, they don't want us to work on our own cars!

    I have been told that there's a Durametric tool that can reset these lights and perform other tasks. Does anyone here have any experience with this or some other tool? At this point, I would rather spend the money on this tool than $76 for a 5 min job at the dealer...

    I always assumed those service indicators came on when the dealer's kid's orthodonture bills were due.
