    Your view on facelift diffuser?

Here are 2 spyshots with camo, a pic of the current SportDesign package option, and one of the digital renderings that supposedly accurately shows the new facelift revised rear apron with a no longer optional diffuser. What's your initial take on this? Will it will actually offer noticeably improved aerodynamics/performance or is it just for show?

I hope my initial reaction will change with official pictures, but the diffuser, just like the Japanese looking downswing lights, doesn't fit the design of the car as a whole. It's fine that there is a SportDesign option but that's how it should stay. For me, a large part of the appeal of the '05-'08 987S design was the classic, understated lines. While the current car is going to age gracefully, I get the impression the much busier looking facelift will look dated and possibly ridiculous in a few years.

Re: Your view on facelift diffuser?

I don't personally like the sport design option, any more than I liked the option on the 986, clutters the original clean design and the rear diffusers are utterly useless apart from probably dirt collectors.

The first shots I've seen of the front of the car I prefer to the existing design (strange how the 997.2 has adopted the Boxster front end styling to the horror of some 997 owners who don't like there cars looking too much like "The Poor Man's Porsche)"

Don't particularly like the bigger and more clumsy looking door mirrors, either. For me the jury is out on the Tokyo-By-Night LED rear lights.

It's just change for changes sake, IMO.

Re: Your view on facelift diffuser?

    Hey Dr. J,
As far as my limited knowledge of aerodynamics goes, a diffusor only makes a real functional difference if it works together with the whole underbody of the car. Only the, a diffusor is able to create a tunneling effect, causing the airflow under the car to accelerate, and thus create downforce (and less drag?). IMO, a diffusor shape in the rear bumper only does not help anything, and only appeals to the; ricerboys; no functionality, but at least it looks fast...

It looks gimmicky, and is another reason why I'm concerned that Porsche is wandering away from its roots.

Re: Your view on facelift diffuser?

Thanks guys, wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I've been trying to find reasons to like this car, and I would like the 30hp and LSD it would have over my 3.2, but the new aggressive style of the redesigned areas just seems to make it look like it's trying way too hard to be cool and is targeted at kids.

    Agreed.
