Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever..LOL

Wasn't sure before, but the Bilstein installation means I now plan on keeping my Turbo baby for a long time and therefore $$$ is once again pouring into her. Thought I would post my series of "absolutely last mods" . Anyone please feel welcome to add your mod to this thread (minor type, not exhaust, wheel, power, or suspension related).

First in the series is a special rear view mirror called aspherical. What it looks like is a wide angle view so you could see more, plus the edge bends and becomes even wider. Atomic80 & Larry are the ones who bought it to my attention; I believe it is standard for European car (please correct me as needed).

The verdict: It absolutely, positively works and is a pleasure to use. Not only does it makes the rear view more interesting to watch (you see what I mean when/if you have it), it also makes driving safer IMHO as the stock mirror admittedly gives too small of a view. I know you are supposed to look every time you change lane but there will be times where these come in very handy. For example my neck's range of motion decreases as I get older and I can't turn as much. Kidding...

Now you might want to sit down when I tell you the cost. Remember this is not just any mirror, it's Porsche mirror , and it does have an electrical board in the back to make it dimm-able just like the stock mirror. I got it for US $315 per side, 630 for the pair, from www.sunsetimports.com. Part number is 997 731 035 05 for the left side of the car, 997 731 036 05 for the right side of the car. Installation is free from my Porsche shop, Lucent in Los Angeles and it looks like it *should* be no more than a few minutes if you know what you are doing.

Kidding aside, I *do* think that it makes driving safer, so it would get my highest recommendation.

View from stock US left side mirror:

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

View from right side aspherical mirror (sorry left mirror is already on the car):

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

View of car towards the edge, note the dotted line separating the wide angle area from the super wide angle area.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Yep, I definitely recommend getting these if you can swing it. I first noticed this mirror when I drove the 997TT in Europe a couple years ago. They're standard equipment on Porsches in Germany and I imagine the rest of Europe as well but only on the left side (or right side in the case of the UK). Interestingly enough, back then they provided mirrors with a black trim around the borders like so:

I actually have compared this and the non-black trimmed versions and prefer the former because it reduces glare. The outside edges reflect glare when the inner section is darkened which I found to be slightly annoying but no big deal. According to Can, Porsche no longer sells/offers mirrors with the black trim.

    Good mod, Can!

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Wasn't there some talk in an earlier thread to get the convex passenger side mirror and the aspherical driver side mirror?

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Convex mirror is just the standard passenger side. US versions have "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" written whereas non-US versions do not. I have the latter.

    Duffy,

Excellent question; I knew someone was going to ask. The aspherical mirror *is* a convex mirror; AFAIK the term aspherical refers to the fact that the mirror has different degrees of convexity, mild in the middle and severe at the edge.

You are probably wondering how the 3 different mirrors differ from each other. The term convex is not easy to understand; let me use the word wide-angle in showing the differences. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the normal (narrow) view and 10 being the super wide angle view of a super convex mirror:

Stock US Driver Side (Left) Mirror: 1
Stock US Passenger Side (Right) Mirror: 7
Aspherical Mirror, the inner part: 5
Aspherical Mirror, the outer part: 10

I hope it's clear to you now that the Aspherical Mirror gives a more dramatic improvement on the driver side, and less so on the passenger side.
In fact, the passenger side stock mirror actually gives a slightly WIDER view than the aspherical view, at least for the inner part. The beauty of the aspherical mirror is that outer part where it becomes super wide angle (super convex) and reduces blind spot to practically nothing.
I hope I have not thoroughly confused EVERYBODY here.

The bottom line is for that for the driver side, the aspherical mirror is most definitely recommended. For the passenger side: I'll let you know in a few days as mine is being installed. Perhaps the recommendation won't be as strong, other than the fact that don't we Porsche-nuts like to buy things in pair?

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

So we have five different mirrors?
    1 - Aspherical Drivers
    2 - Regular Drivers
    3 - Aspherical Passenger
    4 - Convex Passenger - no warning
    5 - Convex Passenger - with warning

Stock is 2 & 5. Jason it sounds like you have the 1 & 4 combination and Can you have the 1 & 3 combo. Can, do you have the #3 on your car and if so, what do you think of it compared to stock? I'm getting ready to order and deciding which combination to go with. Do you recommend ordering from Sunset? Who would be a good contact there?

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

I do have 1 and 4 as you noted. I wanted to go with 1 and 3 but at the time they couldn't find the part numbers for #3. There's actually over 10 different versions but I don't need to confuse you any further by naming the rest. As Can pointed out, it's very possible that Porsche has discontinued the versions that I have with the black trim borders. If you'd like, I could get the part numbers for the ones I did get. The one to contact at Sunset Porsche would be Jeff Clark (jeffclark@sunsetimports.com) or 503 641 8600.

Ideally, I'd like to have gotten 1 $ 3 with the black borders but I'm satisfied with having 1 & 4. On my Audi A3 I have aspherical mirrors on both sides but I found that it's unnecessary because it's easier to turn your head right than left.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

So I did make sense as you understood it perfectly. Here is a more complete list:
1A - Aspherical Drivers with Black plastic rim
    1B - Aspherical Drivers
    2 - Regular Drivers
    3 - Aspherical Passenger
4 - Convex Passenger - no warning - with Black plastic rim
    5 - Convex Passenger - with warning

Jason has 1A and 4, neither is available anymore per Sunset when I called them with Jason's part numbers. I didn't feel too bad since I rarely drive this car at night and when I do, the stock rim without the plastic rim doesn't bother me.

1B is most definitely recommended. The question is whether you should replace 5 with 3. I am not sure if it adds that much more vision field; I'll test later and let you know.

If you get 1A you sort of need to replace 5 with 4 so the black rims are on both sides. If you get 1B, there is no need to replace 5 unless you want aspherical. Am I driving you nuts yet?

We need to be careful about chatting with Jason. It could be costly.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Another "mod" for my baby: Valentine V1 wired into fuse box so it turns on and off along with engine start/stop.
The wire runs across the windshield then down to the fuse box. Installation time about 30 minutes, without any cutting into car's wiring system.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

    Arrows showing path of wire.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Wires at fuse box. One goes to bolt on car frame, one goes to the blue fuse, third row from top, 6th position from left. I don't know what this fuse is for but it does turn on and off with engine start/stop.
(Ignore the 2 extra black wires in the picture; this is an older picture from my 997 C2 and those 2 black wires were for an extra outlet for something else.)

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

The stock Turbo emblem in the back of the car has this somewhat cheap looking (to me YMMV) shiny chrome finish that bothers me, so I just got this Satin Silver Turbo emblem from Eric. I was shocked at the price, a paltry US $50. Really was thinking 150 or so, this being not just any plastic, but *Porsche* plastic . One nice thing is that it matches the Silver finish of my wheels as well.

This is actually OEM part -- not repainted -- and I don't know how Eric got a hold of them, but I believe he has only a few left. If you are interested: www.bumperplugs.com

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Can, I wired my v1 similar, but mine doesn't have to cross the A pillar. The wire is long enough to run all the way down the inner side of the A pillar towards the windshield then on down into the fuse box.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

    Can,

Funn you should go with the painted emblem. I went initially with black (but it'd disappear on my Cobalt), then painted and then now I'm back to chrome. They match my tips at least.

It's a sickness, I tell you, modifying the Turbo. Check out the list of mods I've made since I bought it:

Porsche OEM 993 black lug nuts with locking nut

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Jason - over here in the UK, OPCs are refusing supplying extended warranties (after the standard 2 years) if you have one single non-Porsche-approved change on your car! They would have a field-day with your car

I too am cooling my mods now for a while as I need to save up for that recession that's on it's way

Alex... is there actually any of the original car left And does an umbrella really count as a mod I've modded my Aston with a set of American Hard Gums Looking forward to seeing it in all it's glory on Sun!

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

    That's Jason's list not mine!

All I have had done is what's listed in my signature. Nothing beyond that. I am an amateur compared to the likes of Jason, Shavster, and GT to name but a few...

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Jason i think you forgot one mod: Exclusive aluminium fuel filler cap

I actually have that! I just forgot to list it!

Oops...just went through the list. There's a couple other things I forgot to add such as painted front/rear lips and GT2 side skirts. I know there's a couple other things. Like others have said before, it's a sickness I tell you!

Alex, that's interesting that the OPC is that rigid with you folks over there. I was able to buy an extended warranty for mine. Up to 7 years or 130,000 miles (whichever comes first). I still can't believe that you folks only get 2 years warranty over there. How many miles?

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

I wouldn't worry about an extended warranty on a gt1 based car, they are bullet proof. Any anomaly would have showed up in the first couple of months. Mine has been flawless.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Chris, thanks. I cross the wire to the outside so I could run it under the black rubber strip. You do not cross at all? Or you cross over at the dashboard level? Or is there another path down to the fuse box? See picture. TIA.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

I didn't cross over at all, I ran it all the way along the A pillar towards the windshield, then back laterally along the windshield toward you, then under the rubber. It never really crosses at all, you never see it, I'll put up a pic.
If you follow your blue arrow all the way to the rubber, deep in the crevice behind the vent is where it dives down into the rubber proper.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever.

Chris, thanks. I think I see the little slit that you use to run the wire. Part of the slit looks wide enough, but the part close to the windshield looks so narrow I probably didn't think the wire would fit. Will give it a try & thanks again.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever..LOL

Recommended to me by a forum member who should know what he's doing & not exactly a mod, but pretty enough Smiley that I will post here: The Longacre Digital Tire Gauge. Kidding aside, due to the inherent goodness and precision of the 911 chassis, I certainly could feel variation of 1-2 psi in the car's tires and just want to make sure I have an accurate reading so I could reproduce reliably what pressure I like best.

(I adjust until the TPMS's Deviation Reading is zero, then use the Longacre to match the TPMS's absolute values at this deviation zero point. I hope I make sense here. It comes out to about 31/37 when the ambient temperature is low, and 33/39 when temp is high. Charles's Law if you remember your high-school physics LOL.)

If you are looking for a tire gauge of reference quality, I would highly recommend it. A little costly but... nothing but the best for my Turbo baby.

Re: Inventory of my last mods.Or latest, whatever..LOL

Update of the toy list - from an older post. More toy for my treasured Turbo baby!

My only disappointment with the fabulous PCCB brake is that its high/early "bite" position make it very difficult to heel toe. I heel toe with the sides of my foot and this method requires that the heights of the gas and brake pedal to be close to each other. In my first 997 with its standard brake, there was no problem. With the Turbo's PCCB, the brake pedal is too high in relation to the gas pedal when it bites, for me that is, and makes the process nearly impossible.
(BTW, there have been discussions of this issue in the past on rennlist GT forum and it appears that the only exception is at the track, where the PCCB brake once warmed up would bite deeper and allows easy heel-toe.)

Rennline is a US company that makes these cool aluminum after-market pedal plates/covers. They sell them in set of 4, for a very reasonable US $ 225. What I am interested in, however, is the OPTION that they offer in addition to this set: the throttle lifter that AFAIK is designed to help with the very problem I have with heel-toeing with PCCB brake. The lifter has adjustable screw that allows you to RAISE the height of the throttle pedal plate. I saw this in Atomic80's & "Over the hill" (Larry)'s cars a few months ago and finally decided to give it a try when someone again recommends it on rennlist's GT3 forum. Also, pay attention to the throttle extension, that red part; it's the key to this mod, besides the lifter. ****** http://www.rennline.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PA71 *****
Enclosed is a picture of the set in aluminum finish. I prefer something more inconspicuous so I got the black model instead.

Anyway this is the final report: I love it! This thing completely takes care of the problem and makes freeway exits Smiley vastly more fun than they have any right to be -- kidding. By positioning my foot in between the gas and brake, I could modulate either with extreme ease when slowing down/downshifting and continue to position my foot there while in the curve. (This is made possible by the throttle extension, the red part.) There is no problem with foot "tangling" from the wider width of the pedals.
