    Urgent Help....Opinions on 993 Tiptronic.

    Hey guys.

    Need your help and fast.

    I'm looking for opinions on 993 tiptronic (for those who have it and for those who have driven).

    I have a chance now to buy a ocean blue 993 carrera s with 80k on the clock, very well equipped and appears to be in exelent condition.

    The car is in Portugal but it has a Spanish license plate.Good price, 54.000 euros (60.000 with Taxes).

    The only thing bugging me it's the tiptronic.

    Never driven one and in my life had few chances of driving any car with automatic transmission (a Mercedes S320 and a Discovery TD5).

    What's your opinion?

    The owner said he prefers a tiptronic transmission on a 993 (altough he prefers the manual on a 996).By the way, the onwner is 5 stars.

    The car is meant to be driven mostly on weekends and go outs at night.

    I would apreciate your opinions.

    Apparently the car looks 10/10 condition, looks perfect!!!!

    Love the looks, but something brought my attention!!!

    Those front seats (driver&co-driver's seat), I suspect those seats have been replaced, and installed new ones....I mean how a car with those miles (which it isnt that high though), but in a general term, those seats, and even more with that soft-look leather option, are very easily to leave them with good signs of use, they look too new....Anyway, i might be completely worng, and the original owner has been treating that car like a baby !!!...

    Also is that car from Madrid???, if it is, from what specific porsche dealer???.....

    I would say, have a look first and take the car to a reliable mechanic, to see if those are real miles.....there are a lot of porsche's here in Spain, with the tachometer, mmm what's the word???? , oohhh yess !!! , modified?????

    BUT, I must say that looking to those pics, that 993S, looks phenomenal, the only downside probably is the tiptronic, but if you dont mind and you love the 993, I'd say that's a very competitive example to satisfy your dream !!!

    Now, talking form another point of view......With that price, you are in the 9964S area, dont you prefer a newer car, better handling and performance???, Also for that price you can have examples of the first 987S's, Also I would say, if you wait some more months, you could get 997mk1 carrera (non S), and with similar miles like this 993S

    Of course, that 993 will depreciate less, but I would rather go to a newer model for the same amount of money !!

    Just my 0.02 cents !!!, although that 993S looks FANTASTICO !!!!

    As you might know, the 993 Carrera S is by many considered the ultimate 911 of all times. It has the timeless shape ot the 993, the widebody of the S version and the last version of the air-cooled engine. I must say it looks like a stunner.
    However, the gearbox is something you have to decide on by yourself. Myself, I would never buy an automatic gearbox for a sportscar, but that is just my own preoccupation.
    What would you buy this car for? As an investment? Then you should investigate which cars hold their value better, auto or manual.
    Driving in stop and go traffic? -> Auto.
    Driving pleasure in the weekends? -> choose whatever you like most.

    Just go with your heart, but don't ignore the rationale... you can't go wrong! ;-)

    The car was bought in Madrid from an official dealer acording to the owner so i suppose the miles the car are original.

    I agree, the seats look 2 new.By the way, i dont think they are soft look.The appear to be in the lower part but arent in the upper part.

    As for another model.The 987 (or a 986) is out of question.

    As far as 996 c4s, is the one from the 996 series that i really like.But for me the 993 is the ultimate.

    Interesting enough, when i started here on the board, me (alongside JP66) if i'm not wrong, we're planing on buying a 996 4s or a 997s when it would come out (that was in 2003 if i'm not wrong).

    I've been in love with the 993's since i first saw it for the 1st time in late 2003 (there arent many 911's here in Azores, specially from the old guard)

    It was a turbo and it was in Lisbon.I just went crazy and parked next to it was a 996 4s and 996 mk1 carrera 4.

    When i looked at this car i could care less about the other 2.

    Beliveve me, i was stunned.I stared at the car for about 15 minutes and if a cop didnt show up asking me what the hell i was doing i would stare it all day long.

    Last year i had the chance to drive a 97 targa (with 240k on the clock!!!!!!!!!!!) and i loved it.The sound of the doors, the sound of the engine, the looks and i tought it was very confortable.

    It was manual and i realy liked the gearbox.No problem whatsoever.

    The car i'm going to buy is not going to be an investiment.It's a car never to be sold (unless something really bad happens).

    This Carrera S besides looking great also has a good price.

    I have to drive this sob.

    Even if the car is a real beauty I would wait for a manual. If you have driven a manual 993 before and liked it you will probably regret taking the tiptronic. Furthermore, the tiptronic 993 weighs 25kg more. Personally, I would never choose an automatic transmission with a torque converter in a 911 or any other sports car. A lousy torque converter destroys the whole experience of driving such a car. DSG/PDK is another story, but would still lack driver involvement.
    Testdrive it and you will see.

    Wow, nice example. Don't settle for the tip. A properly setup 993 with RS clutch and LWF is a world apart. I have a 97 C2 NB...love it. Here's a shot from a recent Porsche run.

    All Tip cars pre-997 is un-drivable, the programming is just plain stupid. Even the 997 ones aren't perfect, but at least they are acceptable.

    For S's cars, imo I think the 996 C4Ss are the perfect ones, even better than the 997 4S's I think. But I might be bias as I had 2 of those before.

    I agree on the tiptronic. The 993 engine is not known for abundance of torque, the widebody outfit and tiptronic transmission would just contradict the sportscar concept. Furthermore, the automatic in the 964 and 993 has only four gears. The manual gearbox does fit the car much better which reflects in resale value.

    There is a black targa in my neighbourhood with a similar interior. The car looks gorgeous as it is, however try out that transmission if you intend to keep the car for a long time. No reasons for compromises then...

    That 993 looks beautiful, but like most have said, wait till you find a comparable manual. Or maybe you can find a nice 993/996 C4S.
    Either way, get a manual. You can't go wrong with a 993. Aside from a 996 C4S, I don't like the looks of any other 996's. The 993's are all nice.

    I own a 993S and it is one of my all time favorite cars.
    It is a manual with 65.000kms , it has very nice options like 92l tank , sportseats , LSD , etc.
    I paid the car much less than the tiptronic you can buy.
    And tiptronic is at least 5 to 10.000 euro less valuable than a similar manual.
    I would NEVER EVER buy a 993 tip. It is a big mistake.
    Not even for 40K euro. 55K Euro is not a good price at all.
    For this you get a very decent manual with less km's.

    Vesuvio edition bought 2years ago from first owner in Germany. It is very easy for members of the EC to buy a car in Germany , no extra taxes or anything.
