    This just in: Mercedes-Benz will off full iPhone connectivity next year. http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/233582/
    I wonder whether Porsche will get around to this before 2018...

    Exactly - the revised PCM in the MK2 997 enables this already. Have a look at the Inner Strength brochure for more details on what is standard and what options there are. The revised PCM really is a quantum leap on the PCM in the Mk1 997. PAG were lagging embarrassingly behind but have leaf-frogged the competition with the new PCM equipment.

    So Porsche will allow me to toggle between using the iPhone as a bluetooth phone, and as a mp3 player using either PCM or steering wheel controls?

    BMWs have had that capabilty since the iPhone was introduced.

    So I can toggle between phone and music using the PCM and steering wheel controls? Last time I tried that on a BMW it wouldn't work. It either had to be set as a phone or as an mp3 player. The system couldn't hand the toggling in real time.

    I'm not sure wht you mean by "toggling" back and forth. In my BMW (a 2008), I have my iPhone connected to the iPod adapter in the center console to run music through the car's "aux audio" interface. I also switch on the phone's bluetooth to synch with the car's phone interface.

    Seems like the BMW system sees the iPhone as two devices: a phone (via bluetooth), and an mp3 player (via aux). Is that correct, and is that how the Porsche system works as well?

    Yes for BMW. Hope so for Porsche.

    It really depends on the iPod.

    The car uses bluetooth to interface to the phone, and an iPod adapter to interface with the MP3 player. The car doesnt (shouldn't ) know if those two interfaces connect to the same device... so long as the iPod supports it (which it sounds like) then it should work.

    FWIW, you must have intended to write "it really depends on the iPhone".
