Absolutely agree with you guys. The reflectorstripe in itself (the idea) is nice, as it was on the 996 C4S and the cars before that. But this is one of those marketing driven styling elements which I really hate. C'mon porsche, we know that you can design such beautiful things if you want to... why don't you then?!?
This is the kind of design decisions which make me absolutely ashamed of porsche...

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

This red stripe is a differentiating feature that Carrera 4 owners wanted to distinguish their cars from normal Carreras.
It is neither good looking nor ugly, just different. Somebody who wants or needs a C4 wouldn't mind the stripe. Somebody who wouldn't want/need a C4 (i.e. the majority) shouldn't be bothered with this dubious styling element.

The funny thing is that before the red stripe was first shown in spy pictures many were referring to Porsches of old and were missing the red stripe, whereas as soon as it appeared in spy photos the majority don't like the idea or the execution!
    What a strange world!

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

The C4 is probably the most attractive one in the new line up, 997 perfected.

Is the front wheel arch slighly bigger too?

Very true, the red stripe, which I find is too thin for my liking, actually seems to look better with single pipes.

Is this Porsche's way of making the non S versions more sexy ?

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

I suspect we are going to see a whole lot of aftermarket red stripe sticker popping up online.

That is because many were hoping for a red stripe in the fashion of the 996 and earlier models: i.e. a red stripe integrated into the design of the car. The way Porsche has slapped this red stripe on the 997 is just horrendous! It shows that they are after easy money instead of beautiful design.

    997 Carrera 4/4S - Official press release...

Porsche Carrera 4 with Electronically Controlled All-Wheel Drive...

"911 Model Initiative continuing with Four New Models"

Stuttgart. Showing the dynamic attitude typical of the brand, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, are continuing the generation change of the 911 model series. Just a few weeks after the new 911s with classic rear-wheel drive, the all-wheel-drive versions Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S are now entering the market in both Coupé and Cabriolet guise.

A whole range of new technologies surrounding the engine, the transmission and drivetrain ensures an even higher standard of driving pleasure on much lower fuel consumption. Particularly the precision and fast response of the new, electronically controlled all-wheel drive offers an even more intense driving experience, above all in interaction with the likewise new flat-six engines with Direct Fuel Injection and the PDK Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe or double-clutch gearbox available as an option.

The features and characteristics of the new engines speak for themselves: Depending on the model, the new all-wheel-drive Carrera offers up to 8.5 per cent more power, up to 12.9 per cent more fuel economy, and 15.4 per cent lower CO2 emissions. Specifically, output of the 3.6-litre power unit is up by 20 to 345 bhp (254 kW). At the same time a Carrera 4 Coupé with PDK, to take just one example, consumes a mere 10.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, equal to 28.0 mpg imp. The improvements on the 911 Carrera 4S with its 3.8-litre power unit are equally significant, with maximum output up by 30 to 385 bhp (283 kW) on overall fuel consumption down in the case of Carrera 4S Cabriolet with PDK to 10.7 litres/100 km, equal to 26.4 mpg imp.

In the new generation of the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S electronically controlled PTM Porsche Traction Management replaces the former all-wheel drive with its viscous multiple-plate clutch. This superior system developed for the 911 Turbo and modified for the Carrera models combines the driving pleasure so typical of Porsche with an even higher standard of driving stability, traction and agile handling further enhanced by the mechanical rear axle differential fitted as standard.

The new all-wheel-drive sports cars come with sporting manual transmission featuring six gears. As an alternative the new models are available with Porsche's new Doppelkupplungsgetriebe replacing the former Tiptronic S automatic converter transmission and offering an even faster gearshift on less fuel. The Doppelkupplungsgetriebe or double-clutch gearbox comes with seven gears shifting electro-
hydraulically without the slightest interruption of traction and pulling force.

The new generation of the 911 model series stands out clearly through the discreet but striking modification of the front end and new lights technology. The new Carrera models come in all cases with bi-xenon headlights and new LED daytime driving lights.

The newly designed rear light clusters also feature LED technology and for the first time Porsche offers Dynamic Bending Lights as an option. It almost goes without saying that all Carrera 4 models come as before with their muscular rear end 44 millimetres or 1.73" wider than on the two-wheel-drive versions. And a new reflector trim bar between the LED rear lights gives the typical rear end of the car even more dynamic character.

All all-wheel-drive Carrera models will be at the dealership as of 25 October 2008.

It's interesting, Audi have the totally opposite. Oval pipes designate the halo RS models, while dual pipes are for the lower S models.

Last, can you spot the titanium colored slats in the air intakes?

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

I would have preferred a bigger stripe, 964 style.

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

This stripe looks like crap to me. Not valueable enough for a 911! Hopefully there is a way to paint this piece of plastic.

There is no line flowing, neither from the lights nor from the whole shape by itself. Dont know what Porsche is thinking? Tuning a la 1982!

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

Is it just a reflector stuck onto the metal? or is it integrated?

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

Half of us seem to have been writing about how much we want the red stripe back etc etc and now we see it the other half now don't want it!!

    PAG cant win

Seems stuck on to me. I wonder who will the first to fit it to a C2 or C2S?? Engine cover is the same so....

I quite liked the original version with Porsche written into it, nice and low down but on the new cars I'm not sure. I'll watch for one on the autobahn and then see how it looks.

FWIW the taped up C2S 997.2 really didn't seem much quicker than mine when he gave it a footfull a couple of weeks ago

Must have been the weight of all the comfort extras

It does have value, it makes the car look wider and more muscular.

Same here. That photo is stunning. This is going to spark off a new after market hobby of fitting stripes on to the 911.

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

My Mrs just spotted the pic on my pc and her exact words were: "looks cheap!".

I tend to agree. Not good. I do like the other details though. Not that it's a massive change from current model.

    +1

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

ZZ, good to see you. nice photoshop job. I agree thicker looks better.

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

thicker looks fara far better than that gum stripe they placed at the back. When will Porsche learn ? they started with that stupid PDK button, now they've come up with a bubble gum stripe at the back P-cars I know you are reading this ! it's a disgrace

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

Slowly but surely, they are making it look as stunning as the 993.. It's not pure "art", as with the 993.. But it's getting there :-)

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

I can't express how awesome I think this car looks. In person, the wider track and stripe will make the 997 4 looks WIDER than the Nutty Professor's butt.

    Oh, it's so beautiful!

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

I also like the wider stripe much better!

What do you think about the expected switch to the electronic 4WD of the Turbo. Is the car going to be as tricky at the limit?

I can only agree with you, Joost.

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

Are you sure it's slapped/stuck on? We need to get some close up pictures to see if it is integrated into the bodywork.

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

What do you guys think of the black diffusor on the a white C4S?

Re: 997 Carrera 4/4S: first OFFICIAL pictures!!

    Better stripe wuold be better!!
