    997 facelift CO2 figures are different in the UK

    Just noticed that on the UK webspecial, and in the first drives I have read so far in UK mags, they operate with a CO2 value of 225 g/km for the 997.2 Carrera, which just happens to be the magical limit for the London congestion charge.

    Have they de-tuned the UK engines, do you have magical fuel in the UK,
    or is Porsche just fighting the power - Public Enemy style

    Our new mayor campaigned on the removal of the Pounds25 CC for higher polluting vehicles. So it shouldn't make a difference. Plus the CC website seems to inidicate that the CO2 charge will not go ahead.

    FWIW, Funny that the TT is advertised as an "air cleaner" for smoggy cities like LA. The engine exhaust air is actually CLEANER than the air the engine takes in! No kidding.

    The 225 g/km threshold is not just significant for the higher Pounds25 London congestion charge (which the new mayor Boris Johnson has promised not to introduce) but it is also the threshold for the highest road tax band. So a new 997 Mk2 will avoid the highest road tax payment of Pounds400 next year AND also the 'showroom tax' that the Labour Government wants to apply to all new cars in the highest road tax band.

    Double whammy avoided. But it hands a moral victory to the environmental campaigners and the former mayor Ken Livingston who argued that introducing these penalties on the most polluting vehicles will force manufacturers to make their vehicles less polluting (otherwise they will lose customers who don't want to be hit by these environmental taxes/charges). IMHO it rathers undermines the 'fairness' arguments that PCGB has made in its application for judicial review by the High Court. If it was so 'unfair' why did PAG try to cut pollution emissions? Why not just rely on the judge? There's another side to that coin though - cutting emissions makes PAG look like it's 'doing its best'. I think this latter argument will help more than the previous one will hinder it. Overall, it will help IMO.

    But if the UK engines ARE de-tuned in some way, that's yet another reason to buy the car from somewhere else in the EU. Since it can be taxed etc in the UK using the UK g/km figures despite producing the power etc of the EU version.

    But I think this may have been achieved without cutting power/acceleration. It could be a more efficient catalytic converter or some clever tinkering with the ECU.

    No typo AFAIK. It is 225 g/km for the 997 C2 Mk2. It's even stated in the covering letter I got from the OPC when they sent me the Inner Strength brochure.

    Well, it is a TYPO. Big one IMHO since it is on Porsche UK web site and in printed brochure as well...

    A bona fide mistake it seems. But easy you can sue them for that if you think that there are valid grounds

    The "unfairness" of the CC charge is that 224g/km is Pounds8, while 226g/km would have been Pounds25 with no exemptions. Costs that had nothing to do with congestion or a "fair" measure to society of the costs of carbon. If UK Plc's can buy carbon emission credits for Euro 25 for a tonne of CO2, then it seems odd that Joe Public is charged such a price for a fe grams.

    On enviromental victories this has more to do with EU legislation than anything else.
