PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

My dealer tells me that PDK won't be available for the 2009 Turbo. He believes that the technology cannot handle the Turbo engine's torque for the long haul and that there is no real improvement in performance compared to the tiptronic.

    What have you guys heard?

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

There were some rumors that it might be made available in a few months but no one really knows.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

Heck..., I don't want it now if the "paddles" look like buttons.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

certainly there will be improved performance when pdk is introduced to the turbo. i guess it will come with the intro of the facelift for the tubo, gt2 and gt3.

My guess is as 2010 MY but available perhaps as early as Spring 2009.

    You mean PDK.2

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

PDK is not ready for prime time (Turbo torque). Still in testing and more will be announced soon.

Don't expect it on first release '09 Turbos.

i expect it on FL 2010 turbo.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

When you think about it; that says a lot for the Tiptronic. You know..., it can handle all that HP/Tq and not lose very much power in the process.

the tip in the turbo is a good match due to it's torque numbers. i also find the shift times quite fast. especially in 1-2 and 2-3 shifts it almost feels like a dsg transmission.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

Honestly, the pdk will add very little over the tip s currently in use.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

Porsche is really making a mistake using the PDK to replace the tip. It should have been used to replace the ancient 6-speed manual.

It gives the user the option to use it as a straight manual but without the clutch pedal and a full-auto mode. It really takes nothing away from the 6-speed manual experience other than a redline clutch dump.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

Are you kidding me Nick. Porsche would be making a mistake if they replaced the 6speed manual with the PDK. There will always be traditionalists like myself that prefers a manual transmission with a traditional clutch.

Sorry for the off-topic ADD diversion but...,

It will be fun when everything is electric.

0-60 in ~2 seconds and no manual vs. automatic debate anymore.

I'll gladly trade a ~2 sec 0-60 time for "more driver involvement" with a manual; will even give up PSE sounds for an insanely high-strung electric whine.

Funny you should say that because right now I have 3 different vehicles with 3 different types of transmissions. 6 speed manual, 5 speed automatic and 6 speed DSG. I like having the variety.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

dsg is far superior to tiptronic.
automatics are a thing of the past....manuals too btw.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

DSG is da bomb, I am off in hk right now and I am toying with a TT with DSG. Fantastic to drive but still not as smooth as a pure automatic.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

DSG seems like the perfect replacement for the Automatic, but I still prefer the clutch and 6 speed combo!!!

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

I don't actually care that much about timing stats. Just wondering - but pPerhaps the reason why people with Tip/F1/DSG/SMG are so fixated about times is because that's the only 'thrill' left i.e. just seeing how fast you can go or how quickly you can accelerate.

With a manual gearbox, you can largely relax about all that and just enjoy the experience of interacting with the car, choosing gears, heel-toeing, modulating the clutch and accelerator pedals.

It's part of the joy of it. I wouldn't want to delegate (i.e. give away) that pleasure to an electronic mechanism that won't enjoy doing it (unlike me) even though it can actually do it more efficiently than me.

    Just my 2 pence.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

6 speed all the way! PDK is just a glorified automatic in my book. Yet another crutch for people who can't drive a stick.

Nicely put. If milliseconds gained by quicker shifting times are important enough to sacrifice driver involvement, then I don't see why one wouldn't just get their thrills by riding the TGV train all day, instead of risking expensive fines by doing it in a car .

    I'm w/ you Jason!!

4 different vehicles, 4 different transmissions.

    F1- (F430)
    6-speed (Turbo Cab)
    Auto (Durango Hemi)
    + Harley's.

Love having the difference. If PDK was available when I purcahsed my Turbo Cab I would have still bought it w/ a 6-speed.

Second that, unfortunatley at least here in the US less and less young people are learning to drive stick and if they do they rarely get good at it and eventually hate it and never teach it to their own kids. It is a vicious circle in favour of all non manual transmissions .

    Useless.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

If Porsche are struggling handling 620-680Nm torque through PDK - then does that mean that when it does come out, there is no way you can fit even a Stage II powerkit (typically ecu + exhaust) with over 800Nm?

No more modding - especially if the GT1 derived engine gets dropped

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

    I LOOOOOOOVE my SMG-equipped M3.

The sukker is fast. Shift anytime and, like a manual, get full kicking power going straight to the road.

And Gents..., wait for it..., PERFECT frickin' _lightning_ fast REV-MATCHED shifts UP _AND_ DOWN everytime.

Don't criticise PDK until you try it because today it might even give you an instant b*ner just like back in High School.

Re: PDK not available for the 2009 Turbo?

i was a happy 6spd purist ...until getting a ride in a friends 599 f1...holy s_ _ t that car shifted so hard and quick that i wouldnt have believed it possible...i wish someone could explain why porsche does not have a similar offering, not buttons on the moving steering wheel but paddles that worked perfectly on a car with serious hp....oh and what about the veryon ?....technology dosent seem to be the problem.
