PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

Here's what they look like (BMW might be aftermarket?).

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

not sure if i like the new push type paddle, have to try it first before i can say anyting about it... problem might still be on shifting while turning the wheel...

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

Yeah those are "Royal F1" paddles on the Bimmer above.

Here's THE stock SMG paddles on E46 M3:

I can now understand P-cars problem, if they raise the paddles higher than what they are then it will obscure the visibility of the instruments. I thinkthis wil be rectified on the 991/998

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

Bottom line, everyone is disappointed about the look of the buttons. They look, well, kinda ghey. But I'm willing to at least reserve judgement until I try it. Even so, that steering wheel looks like ass.

exactly !!, after driving it, then we can say if its good or if its cr!p....anyway, and now I'm saying this seriously, from the three steering wheels, imo, the best is the porsche one....I completely love it !!!!

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

New steering wheel design is stupid. One must place ones palms across that metal section when gripping it. Who volunteers to do that after it has sat in summer sun in an open cabriolet ? Plus, how sporty is it in hand -over hand -turning when you feel leather, metal, leather, metal, leather at the rim ?Visual gimmicky .

    Simplicity

The Ferrari's wheel looks great, feels great, and is the model of usability wit the paddles fixed to the steering column. Add in the "manettino" and you have a very functional setup.

I think Porsche settled for second best, just to be different.

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

You're right. Normally, aren't we supposed to place the hands on the 2:00 o'clock and 10:00 o'clock positions?

Now, to shift without moving the hands, while using our thumb & forefinger, the hands have to be at the 3:30 and 8:30 positions.

Or maybe we're supposed to use our palms for shifting up?

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

If you keep your hands planted like driving on a track, a little thumb/PALM squeeze action is all that's needed for the P wheel?

The others require a reduction of grip on wheel?

Is that the logic, do you think?

You _know_ how many P-car owners are tracking every weekend. Nevertheless the Pcar is supposed to be for the track first and foremost, right?

3:30 and 8:30 - on digital or analogue watch ??

Your thumbs are supposed to rest on top of the spokes, not your pinky fingers . The traditionally taught " 10 and 2 o'clock "position applied when sports steering wheels had their upper spokes there as was the case through the late 1980s . But for the past 15-20 years , OEM and aftermarket wheels have their spokes at 9 and 3 since instrument clusters have expanded and this was done to show more of the gauges.
Recall how many of us in the 1980s used to rotate the 911's speedometer counter-clockwise so we could see the upper scale better but still the smaller gauges on the wider spaced instrument cluster were never really fully readable without moving your head left /right/up/down.

Pre 996 911s , with their individually modular gauges that can be simply pulled out from the front ,let you do a lot of custom things to get around the steering wheel rim/spoke sight line problems such as this set up that moves the fuel, oil temp and oil pressure gauges and new redline shift light to the center !

    Hand Position

There's another reason for using "9 and 3" position. In the event that the airbag goes off you do less damage to your wrists in this position than you do at "10 and 2".

In a steering wheel air bag deployment, it's well known that if your hands are not fully apart at 9 and 3 , they could be thrown back at you and you could bash your face with the backs of your hands esp if you are one of those drivers with left hand at 11-12 o clock and right hand fiddling continuously with coffee mug, gear shift , cell phone ,etc. !

    Re: Hand Position

The proper hand position is 9-3, none other. From that perspective and thumb/index paddle tapping, the design is probably perfectly ergonomic.

Whoever mentioned that in a cabrio under the sun the "metal" parts would be hot... I do not think that's metal; I think it's cheap plastic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There's also a reason, which I forgot , for those little bumps/nubs which might be factored in... .

Oh yummy ...the luxury feel of PLASTIC grips while driving the latest Porsches, just like this car enthusiast . BTW, somebody needs to show him proper hand positioning !

    Re: Hand Position

I think all he needs is a mobile phone and/or coffee/milk bottle.

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

I guess we won't truly know until we all drive the car, but I suspect that the buttons are ergonomically positioned for quick gear changes. Otherwise, Mr. Rohrl would have something to say about it. I'm not really liking that steering wheels have gotten very "busy" lately with all these buttons on them. Call me traditional, but I think a steering wheel should be for turning the car. Not for fiddling with stereos, cell phones, etc.

By the way, has anyone noticed that the bottom of the Porsche steering wheel looks slightly flattened a la Audi R8?

Wha da h*ll kind of driving is _THIS?_

    Re: Hand Position

BTW, just so everybody knows: the shifting (+ and -) can also be controlled by pushing or pulling the shifter/lever. So the "buttons vs. paddles" debate might become a bit less urgent.

I've now just started using the 3 and 9 o' clock positions as of today.

This is for in preparation for the new PDK steering wheel.

    LOL.

In preparation, I'm having vast sections of my brain erased ( )to make room and for the new PCM manual.

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

Will the cupholders remain unaltered? Quality cupholders FTW !

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

It's a small nit, but the PDK paddles are a different color than the 3 spoke steering wheel. The paddles are silver and the steering wheel is more of a bronze color. I'll reserve judgement until I see the car in person, but it looks odd in the photos. I like the silver accents in the interior, but the new black instrument panel looks a bit out of place. Again, I'll reserve judgement until I see the car - these are just my initial thoughts.

Re: PDK Paddle Comp: What do you think?

    The most important question is:
Should these paddles - buttons be called puttles or baddles ?

A few of us had already reluctantly got used to puddles.
