What did hit me was the description of how the dual clutch/gearbox works. How does the box know if your going to go up or down the gears if it's preselected?

That's one of the few negative aspects of a double-clutch gearbox, it can be caught off guard if you do something it doesn't expect and it will take a few milliseconds longer to change gear.
Example: If you are in third gear, let go of the throttle and start braking, the gearbox will assume that you are slowing down and pre-selects second gear in anticipation of you changing down a gear.
But if you have just done a acceleration test and want to slow down a bit but keep on cruising, you then select 4th gear which the gearbox doesn't expect. And hectic shuffling of gears will commence...
To overcome this you will need four (4) clutches, or a quad-clutch gearbox if you like (PQK in Porsche speak). where the in-active half of the gearbox could pre-select both the lower and higher gear than the one you're currently in.

I would say Ferrari F1 is probably 2 to 3 times faster but the clutch life is also 2 to 3 times shorter.
no it's not. pdk or dsg offers almost seamless shifts. no engaging and disengaging of clutch. just change over of driveshaft from inner to outer and vice versa.
