    RC:

Drove on the B17 in Bavaria yesterday in my R8.

"Met" a Porsche 991.2 Carrera GTS Coupe in red along the way.

We initially drove through two sharp curves at very high speeds (over 220 kph) but I couldn't get closer (it was basically the same performance). I thought something is wrong with my car but it didn't feel that way. My R8 does 100 to 200 kph in 6.5 seconds, when I'm alone, I was with my wife this time, so maybe a tiny bit worse indecision (she weights 56 kg).

The Porsche suddenly reduced speed on a straight (at around 200 kph, we had traffic), moved to the right and then moved back behind me. I fully accelerated and drove at around 240-260 kph through some curves there but I couldn't shake off the Porsche. These are usually the curves everyone else "gives" up at these speeds, they aren't difficult to drive that fast but they look nasty (and you need to pay attention that you don't have the surprise of much slower traffic after the curve). I drove these curves at least a couple of hundreds of times, so I could do it in my sleep.

Over 260 kph, I had the feeling that I am driving away very very slowly but under that speed, the Porsche was basically sticking to my rear. He couldn't pass (I moved to the right lane) but it was the same speed.

I was kind of pissed to be honest. Usually, I'm the "king" of these curves at those speeds, the road is also a bit uneven in these curves, so drivers often get even more scared.

Well...the car had a S-OL license plate and www.porsche.de/werkswagen on it. A factory car.

When a speed limit came up, I looked inside the other car (to my left) and there were two pretty women inside the car, the older one was driving and she didn't look happy (neither did I, I think...).

Bottom line is: This was no ordinary 991.2 Carrera GTS Coupe, no way. My 991.2 Carrera GTS Cab has outran on the Autobahn three(!) 991.2 GTS so far, only little by little but it did, it's engine is certainly in a very good shape. My 991.2 Carrera GTS Cab stands no chance against my R8, we tried it.

My guess is: This 991.2 Carrera GTS with S-OL license plates had over 500 hp. At least. So the 992 came into my mind. Maybe the next 992 Carrera GTS? Maybe a different prototype? I know that Porsche tests future engines and tech in "older" models but this one was really looking stock. Nothing out of the ordinary on this car, I looked at the rear, the front, nothing special (as far as I could tell).

So if you meet a Carrera GTS with S-OL license plates on the Autobahn, be aware of it. Not slow. Not the car and not the driver. indecision

    and the Turbo?

Turbo/S was planned for 2020 last time I "checked" but now I heard 2021, apparently it comes as some sort of mild hybrid and there are challenges... Rumored power is currently 630 hp (S version). Forget about a precise time table right now.

OK, guys...you won't like it but today I heard the rumor that there won't be any 992 with n/a engine anymore, not even in the GT models, also no limited or special edition with n/a engine. Rumor comes from a pretty accurate source but of course, it is a rumor, so please take it with a grain of salt.

So maybe time to ask Achleitner again...  angry

This sounds very credible to me.

Assuming the the 992 Carrera GTS model is expected to develop around 500PS it will not be feasible for the N/A GT engine to develop significantly more in the 992 GT3 and GT3 RS. The N/A GT engine is supposed to be at its limit of cubic capacity and PS. And we know that there could be no real lightweight GT car to compensate enough for the small power differential.

Anyway the fastest GT car is turbocharged already and very well for this..

It is usually the opposite of what Porsche communicates. If Dr. Wally would say that the 991.2 is the last NA then every Porsche GT enthusiast would go bananas. Hence, keep the crowd calm Smiley Yes, yes, it will stay NA. Forever.

It was the same with the gearboxes. Preuninger was the expert on flip-flopping forth and back. In the 997.2 PDK was for grannies, in the 991.1 manual was pointless, in the 991.2 the circle is complete with both gearboxes on offer...

I talked to Frank - briefly - with about 3-4 hours to go at Le Mans. He came over to the Experience Center for a brief interview and I spoke to him as he was headed back to the paddock.

He’s never going to say “I promise the next GT3 will be _____” of course. I’m paraphrasing, but he recalled our conversation at Long Beach and conveyed that a signature Porsche GT victory in the “toughest GT race ever” would bode well for the future of naturally aspirated GT cars. He is keenly aware of how much attention the RSR’s sound receives from commentators and fans.

The issue at hand seems to be current and future emissions/sound emissions laws and the mild hybridization which will be implemented (I told you guys over a year ago but Achleitner and Dr. Mössle denied that... Smiley) in the 992. Apparently it would be a challenge and/or too expensive to develop n/a engines out of the same base, so the n/a engines would need to be developed separately, which doesn't make sense from a cost and logistics point of view. Also, lowering weight is a challenge (apparently, the new 992 will be slightly heavier than the current 991 Smiley), considering future pedestrian protection and crash regulations, also the cars need more room in the front for new driving assist features and other electronics/sensors.

Bottom line is: According to my source, the new GT models will not only be fast on the track but also very powerful, to be able to cope with the rising competition. Porsche is working on throttle response/minimizing turbo lags to give turbo charged engines the feel of n/a engines. Will be interesting...

Another reason for no n/a engines seems to be the current situation with the delay in certification.

That information is no longer correct since my visit to Weissach.

When I was told 4.0L, I had automatically assumed it was the Motorsport engine as that's the only 4.0L Porsche had as that time.

But it would seem the GT4 will have the existing 3.8L enlarged to 4.0L instead, 420HP. The Motorsport 4.0L will goes to the GT4RS. IF it ever comes to market.

The 420HP 4.0L engine will also be in the next GT4CS, which will come in 3 versions, a base spec track car, a trophy spec for spec racing and a SRO homologated version for IMSA and International racing.
