    Re: Porsche 968 CS

I bought one new in '94. Still have it. Terrific car.

    Re: Porsche 968 CS

Those are very nice cars! The handling is superb. One thing to watch for is that the timing belts and rollers have been replaced/tightened on schedule. Check that steering rack is not leaking also. Good luck!

    Re: Porsche 968 CS

Thx Grant, friend of mine told me same about timing belts and rollers. I'm lucky that he is director of Porsche here in Zagreb so I can count on every help I'll maybe needed (hope not)
I didn't know detail about steering rack but it's good informations

    Re: Porsche 968 CS

I had a 89 944S2 for 12 years. The mechanicals were very similar to the 968. I had to replace a power steering hose a couple of times. The car was prone to leak power steering fluid from that area for some reason.

Just before I sold it I also had an issue with the cam chain tensioner. The tensioner broke off as I was trying to start it one morning. That repair ran me about $4500. It's not an uncommon failure but I don't think there is anything to be done to prevent it. When it's repaired the tensioner mounting point typically gets reinforced so if the car you buy has already had this failure it might be a good thing. I am also assuming the 968 has the same master/slave cam drive that the 944S2 did.

I replaced the clutch once at 65k miles and also replaced the A/C compressor a couple of times. Nothing else major. It had 135k miles when I sold it. I loved that car and hated to see it go. Very easy to control with neutral and predictable handling. If the 968 looks clean with good records, I say go for it.

The 968 CS is a great piece of car, go for it if the price is right. I never considered the 924 and the 944 to be "real" Porsche cars (I know, they have a lot of "friends" worldwide) but the 968 is definetely one.
And it doesn't have much to do with the 944, thanks god.

Nothing to do with the 944? The 968 was originally to be called the 944S3 but Porsche thought it needed a new name to revive sales. One of Harm Lagaay's first jobs when returning to Porsche was to style a new front end for the 944, again to try and revive sales. The interior continued basically unchanged. The 3.0 twin cam 4 continued with some significant improvements, notably the variable valve timing. A six speed transaxle was also added I believe. Really more a continuation and improvement of the existing design.

So the Cayenne is 'more' porsche than the 944?
And the 944S2 is less porsche than 968? how come?

    Re: Porsche 968 CS

    GM Austin is right.
and the 968 has a vario cam too (which the 944 S2 has not) which also should be looked after.
if the variocam is out of order, the chain will eat the teeth of the camshaft.

if i read your post earlier, i could have helped you in person - i was in croatia in august...

What do the 944 and Cayenne have in common???
If you think you can "tease" me and pay me back my comment towards the 944, I have to disappoint you. I know that the Cayenne is in it's basis a rebadged VW Touareg with a lot of Porsche improvements but what would have been the alternative to buy? If there wouldn't have been a Cayenne available, I think I would have bought the VW Touareg V12 instead.
