Best route back to the UK in a new 996?

Title says it all. I have decided to do a factory pickup on my new Turbo S. Are there some special ways to return home?

Pop by Paris and have a meal at l'Ambroisie
Then another great meal at Guy Savoy; you need to pack some quality food before going back to the UK
Seriously, just buy a Michelin road map, all the Green roads on the map, they're the Scenic and twisty ones

Are you going alone or with wife/girl friend and/or even kids?

I would definetely take the route through Paris (but be careful to choose a good hotel with a guarded parking lot).

Do you want to take a fast route or a scenic route? If the former, you shouldn't even need to make an overnight stay en route.

C'mon fritz, don't be cruel. Let this guy enjoy a little bit of the german Autobahn. And let his wife enjoy this trip too (I recommend a romantic shopping spree in Paris and a one day stay at Eurodisney).

That's the point. The "direct" route Stuttgart-Paris-coast, for instance, would not give him much seat time on a German Autobahn, and also wouldn't be particularly fast in terms of total journey time. Fastest route, including A-roads, would be straight north past Koblenz/Bonn, then joining A4 heading west to Aachen.

What's P's advised break-in top speed for 996TTS? Could make autobahn boring if 996TTS has a strict break-in period; also, what's official break-in advice re: PCCB for twisties work?.....but does new owner plan to abide by any break-in advice?

Re: Best route back to the UK in a new 996?

Drive fast in Germany, then eat and drink well in France , on your way to Paris, have a drive around the Champagne region.

Driver's manual (RoW) advice for first 1000 km/600 mls can be summarised as follows:

    - make longer trips, if possible

    - avoid short trips with frequent cold starts

    - avoid participation in motor sport or driver ed events

    - avoid high revs, especially when the engine is cold.

No specific rev or speed limit is given, but even a moderate max. engine speed of 4500 rpm would correspond to about 130 mph / 210 km/h in 6th.

One piece of advice often heard, but not given in the handbook, is to allow the engine speed to vary when cruising, instead of keeping it constantly at some arbitrary rev limit.

    Europe is your oyster !!!

Why would you want to take the car straight back to the restrictive U.K.? Head south. Have some fun! Spain, Italy, Greece - all great! Two of us have survived for weeks on the luggage capacity of the 996.

Stick to the back roads. This will help with the break-in. Not hard to do when coming from Stuttgart.

Buy a map book. Other useful sites for travel planning:

    http://www.viamichelin.com

    http://www.maporama.com/

The first is well known and covers Europe. The second I just discovered and covers a lot more than Europe. A pretty good resource for all of us! I especially like that they provide lat-long coordinates.

Anyway, whatever you do, have fun with your new toy!!

Re: Europe is your oyster !!!

Need to revisit this thread. Car is now likely to be ready early (ie next week). Kids on holidays and so it is now a foursome going to pick it up. More detailed suggestions welcome.

We would like to avoid Paris and the nightmare that is anywhere near Brussels in Belgium. Thinking south of Luxembourg then through northern france, south belgium (Dinant etc). Probably make two stops to break the journey for the kids.

Thoughts? Suggestions of nice towns to stay for the night?
