    When to get new tires...

    What criteria do you guys use when determining when it's time to get new tires...specifically the rears?

    Porsche recommend 3mm minimum to reduce the risk of handling and braking, plus aquaplaning in wet weather. UK law is 1.6mm minimum across the centre 75% of the tyre width. I generally change somewhere in between, but nearer the 1.6mm. I just drive accordingly when i know the tyres have little life left.

    tires also get brittle even if the car is not driven. i'd say change at 15000km or 1,5 years.

    Only if they are not maintained properly. Something as simple as parking the car on wooden planks versus concrete can extend life and prevent flatspotting severity, rotating periodically also helps.

    What's the longest mileage and the shortest mileage people get?

    I have Michelin Pilot Sport, BTW.

    3mm makes sense if you drive in wet weather - though you still can have fun with them at a trackday (dry weather)

    I use up rear tyres in 9,000-10,000 km. Front tyres last much longer, nearly twice asd much. I don't drive around town so all mileage is during trips, so no slow traffic etc. Pirelli are used up little below 9,000 and Michelin a bit above 10,000.
    Even eaten up rear tyres (around 2mm) give excellent roadholding in dry conditions! However, I noticed that anything below 5mm (new=8mm) is dangerous in standing water and needs care especially on highways.Actually to drive with peace of mind on wet roads with standing water you need brand new tyres.

    I had under 8,000 miles on my 2006 C4 and the rear tires were shot; fronts weren't in great shape either. OEM Bridgestone Potenzas replaced a week ago with Yokohama Advan Sports.

    Check the wear bar indicators regularly and get a tread depth card from your local Discount Tire store...measure inside, middle and outside treads...
    Rears appear to wear 2x fast as fronts.

    Longest mileage: 15,000 miles from 1 set of michelin ps2s on my Boxster S.

    Shortest mileage? 30 laps in my GT3?

    Surprisingly, my front tires (PS 2) wear as quickly as the rear ones. Must be related to the fact that I do 90% of slow speed city driving.

    Accurate, at least if you drive hard through turns. Mine came with the Continentals standard, but I liked them for their handling in the rain. In any case, I had to replace my rear tires with about 10,000 miles (16,000 km), and the front tires had plenty of tread left (which is why I stuck to replacement Conti's for the rear). Given that I have planned two track days this year, I expect to have to replace all four late this year or early next year, at which time I'll evaluate all replacements that are available. By the way, I am especially hard on the rear tires as I tend to use a lot of throttle in turns, which puts more stress on the tread of the rear tires.

    I have Pirelli's and do about 70-75% highway driving. The car passed inspection with about 13000 miles and currentl just shy of 15000. I will be replacing them in the next few weeks.
