    Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

Greetings, all. It's with excitement and a vague sense of disloyalty that I introduce myself - my name is Jonathan and I'm leaving the world of BMW for the land of the 911. My current steed is a special order velvet blue E46 M3 (see attached); prior to that, I owned a 1999 M Coupe and a 1988 E30 M3. I loved them one and all (especially the E30). And now that the M3 is a bit long in the tooth, and I am blessed with a nominally sufficient income and a surprisingly supportive spouse, I'm making the plunge into the world of Porsche.

My father is a racing enthusiast in his mid 70s, so I grew up listening to tales of Jim Clark, Stirling Moss, Phil Hill, Briggs Cunningham, etc. I can remember driving around Cape Cod in the early 80s in his Saab 99 EMS begging him to buy a new 911. What I didn't completely realize was that my father wanted a 911 as much as I did, but simply couldn't afford to buy one. Or, more likely, he could "afford" to buy one, but didn't because things like my education and the well being of the family were more important. So purchasing a 911 is important to me on a variety of levels, and I plan on bringing dad with me to pick up the car.

Enough melodrama! Right now, I am working with a Porsche rep to locate a 2008 911 S with sport chrono but not otherwise loaded with a bunch of options. I'm deeply excited about finding the right car and taking delivery, but I'm savoring the hunt and all of the associated research. I look forward to participating in the forum and will post pics this May when I find the right car. Also, my family and I are moving from Alexandria, VA to Marblehead, MA this June, and I'd love to meet other enthusiasts up in that area.

    Cheers, Jon

    Welcome!

Wait for the facelift or buy slightly used and save some $.

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

Greetings! I made the same jump myself last February, moving from an '02 M Roadster to a 911 S Cab.

The Sport Chrono generates a lot of heated debate on the forums -- Assuming you're shopping for a manual transmission car my advice would be to skip it. It doesn't actually do anything but cost money look ugly on the dash.

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

Wait for the facelift (MY2009) if you are going new. Otherwise, wait for the facelifted cars to arrive so that you may benefit from the depreciation of the current 911S.

Sport Chrono does a lot more than offer stop clock atop the dash. Search the topic for more info, but I will tell you from experience that a car without sport chrono will suffer a worse depreciation than one with it. (Porsche's website gives a detailed explanation of what this option provides.)

I couldn't agree more. There is no performance advantage to sport chrono at all. All you really get is a very sensitive throttle map that turns the gas pedal into an on/off switch and impairs more subtle throttle work. Plus the wart is seriously ugly and destroys the lines of a dash that otherwise really has its routes in 40 years of Porsche heritage.

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

Welcome to this big and great family

I would say the same as everyone, wait for the facelift (only a few months to get introduced in USA), or if you dont mind those changes, get a low mile 997S mk1 when the facelift is in the market, prices will go down, and even more in second hand cars...

We where going to get delivered another 997S mk1 (last of production of the mk1), discount was really good, but decided to wait for the facelift....pdk will be awesome!.

    anyway;

    Welcome !

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

As a man with experience of an E46 M3 you will know what the sport chrono does already on the 911 - exactly the same as the sport button on the M3 does. i.e. very little in fact other than give you a leaded boot right foot making delicate throttle control more difficult.

I too moved from two previous M3's to 911 and this was a big factor in me deciding that sport chrono was one of the few options I didnt want.

Anyway enough said on sport chrono. Hope you find the car you want, and welcome to the club (soon).

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

    Wellcome to the rennteam community!
A good advice is to wait for the facelift. Even if you decide to sell in a few years the 911 you will get more money for a facelift than a MK1 model. In any case if you are getting a manual car forget about the sport chrono. i THINK IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE ONLY ON THE TURBO OR TIPTRONIC CARS.!

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

    Welcome John

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

I agree with the crowd that opines you should wait for the face lift. Welcome to the forum.

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

    Wellcome on renn-board....!!!

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

Jon, welcome on board and to the exciting world of 911!

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

    Welcome to Rennteam

If you're planning on buying new, even with a healthy discount, I too would advise you to wait for MkII. You'll like the changes especially 385bhp and 420Nm torque for the 997 C2S MkII with DFI. There are some very useful (and very belated) improvements to the in-car technology too (iPod, bluetooth, touchscreen PCM etc). The cosmetic changes are really minimal: rear LEDs. As soon as the MkII cars are available I anticipate depreciation for MkI models to become worse.

If you're buying used, it really depends on how sweet the deal is and how long you plan to keep the car.

It seems like you have wanted a 911 for a long time. That might mean it's better for you to spec it just how you like with extensive personalisation.

Alternatively, it could be that your long-held urge will be readily satisfied with a stock model. Either way, it's all good. The more you drive this car, the more you'll realise just how much engineering and accumulated know-how have gone into making it.

    All the best,
    Easy

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

I was also a BMW'er and it was very very very hard for me to buy the 997 C2S over the e92 M3. However, I have had 0 regrets since day one. The car is SUCH a pleasure to drive, you NEVER get bored of it and it is simply PERFECT in every aspect for me. I cannot imagine that I would want anything different or anything to be changed from what its got now (except more power, but you can never have enough of that and thats where the 997TT comes in!).

Im using it as a daily car, done 10,000 km's on it in 3 months and I am still very excited every time I walk to it, get into its cockpit and start the engine.
Im sure you and your dad will enjoy the car a lot.

I like the Chrono package a lot personally. I think it looks great especially when its glowing at night, and I personally like the throttle sensitivity and the gear mapping for my tip (im not a pro, I just like to drive my car!).

Whatever your choice of MY 997 is, you will not regret it!

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

Just to add my own voice, do you want a "light" car for the track or just because you want to save some money?
If you want it for the road, I would suggest you look long and hard at the new version as the SatNav + phone installation in the existing 997 are abysmal, whereas the update looks far far better (we all hope).
If you want to track it, remember that the new Carreras will be as quick as the old Carrera Ss (only 10bhp down, but surely better cornering, grip,...). You could order a base Carrera with a sports chassis (is it finally coming out in the USA?) and 19inch wheels + Sports Chrono Pack, Short Shift, some good seats, and PSE!

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

Thanks everyone! Sorry for not replying sooner, but things have been manic at work. I especially appreciate the comments on the sport chrono; it's true that I hardly ever use the sport button on the M3, especially in the city. I guess I couldn't get over the image of J. Clarkson poking the sport button on Top Gear and then thrashing the yellow Carrera S around their airfield track. On the timing issue, I need to do this before my wife changes her mind!!

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

PSE IS A MUST HAVE....(EVEN IF MINE BROKE UP..! ) BUT NOW ITS FIXED!

Re: Introduction (making switch to stuttgart)

Interesting comments. Long time Porsche driver here,--never have driven a BMW yet!

    Dan
