    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

340hp + PDK and the Cayman will be one hell of a car doing 0-100km/h in around 4.7 seconds. I hope this is true because the Cayman is on its knees begging for more power.

    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

I will really like one, but I think then the restyled 911 will have at least 360hp in base version...so

    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

I'll be waiting to see what Caymans Porsche produce in the future. I was thinking of selling my Cayman S and buying a 997, but then went to a Porsche Club Track Day 2 weeks ago - I had such a blast - my Cayman was absolutely amazing on the track, great under heavy breaking, so stable through the corners. Passed so many 911s...
If the new Cayman has a power upgrade - great, I'll get one.
If it doesn't - I'll still get one.

    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

340-360 bhp from a turbo seems pointless engineering to me, when they have a perfectly compatible N/A engine in that power band. I would much prefer a detuned GT3 motor

I known but remember that the 911 is Porsche's holy grail and they are very caution with models like the Cayman since they don't want the cayman to dethrone the 911.

    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

At the very end of the Cayman FL model span they might do something like a Turbo. But if they were to do a N/A track focused Cayman, I can't see it appealing to the majority of 997 buyers, even if it is faster

I think you have been correct up to now... but I wonder if the fact that the Cayman appears to be gradually finding its market (perhaps at expense of Boxster as in B-forum thread) might give P some more courage to experiment with moving it up-power a bit. Strong 911 sales especially in new markets China/India etc. may mean that 911 does not need sheltering any more, and future 911 buyers will increasingly be after the "classic 911" icon and not necessarily the best driving machine.

Also the fact that Audi has sold R8s well into the future - could an uber-Cayman have taken some of these sales?? Porsche still has by far the most daily-usable mid engine platform to build from ... so why not try a few things?

    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

What does it matter to porsche if the cayman takes sales away from the 911.. im sure they can use it and make an even higher percentage profit of off the cayman without the public realizing. Many will still purchase the 911, because not ALL buyers care about speed....

I think it's well within the realm that Porsche will come with a higher performing cayman, maybe even a small turbo!

    It will sell sell sell..

The new Z4 is just around the corner and you can be sure that it will get the same engine as the 335i sporting 306hp making the Z4 a very attractive roadster. An M version with the 420hp will debut in 2010/2011. Porsche will be forced to up the power for the Boxster and Cayman.

Although the 911 can't in an essence not be substituted as a result of it's engine location, it's image still needs sheltering. What makes the car so famous is that is THE best sports car on the planet. A Cayman with 350-400hp will easily eat the 911S and GT3 for breakfast. The car is more well engineered than what most people think, it has incredibly high limits and will be thunder success with 400hp.

    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

Well, Porsche had very well bring it on pretty soon , as the 997RSR is getting a thrashing on a weekly basis in the ALMS, FIA GT series and the LMS.
    It's painful to watch!!!
It's like watching an old brave (and once great) warhorse trying to battle against a modern, dynamic adversary!

    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

If I wanted more power in a Cayman S, I would go with the Ruf K (Supercharger) conversion.....400hp - 325lbs. torgue

I've read a very good review of this car in the german Autobild magazine some time ago. The main drawback was the noise, saying that at 200km/h you need earplugs so as not to suffer the huge noise. Of course sustained speeds of 200km/h+ are only relevant in Germany.

...........and all that comes at a Euro 200 000 price tag. Thanks but no thanks!

No, the quoted price is Euro 80,000 + VAT. before extras.

But one of the extras is a complete Cayman S, which luwalira had probably included in the amount of Euro 200,000, so maybe you are not so far apart.

The conversion is Euro 22,500. The price I mentioned is for a complete car with Ruf VIN Number.

Oooops! Then you are a long way apart!

    Re: Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo.

I'm not holding my breath - i've had a LOI in with two separate dealerships for a Cayman RS/CS et al for almost 3 years - by the time Porsche decide to do something the ink will have faded on the letters !

Yet another "ear witness" claims to have heard the turbo engine in a factory car at Nordschleife...

Author of the article is Wilhelm Hahne, an independent motor journalist living close to the Ring:
