    Moonroof in 997 possible?

Hey guys, almost every car today come with moonroof. In fact, most of the time cars you see today with sunroof are old models. Porsche are an exception. I guess they force you to buy a targa if you like the sunlight.

for me, i think a roof with some glass makes the car more expensive feel and being able to look up some times is a pretty cool feelings...furthermore, i like the light minus the heat so a moonroof facilitate that.

Anyway, has anyone thought of customising a moonroof. I reckon its not that hard since the roof has been cut and all the the mechanisms are in place. Perhaps just a swap of the roof? or is there more than that?

Like to hear from your thoghts. hopefully i dun sond crazy lol

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

Sure. Substituting a clear plastic or glass for existing metal; sounds simple to me because, like you say the weatherproofing and mechanism is already in place. Problem might be how to fit a sliding panel in there to block the sun from coming in when parked.

Maybe plastic panel already exists IF sunroof mechanism is made by another mfgr and Porsche buys the metal version for installation at factory? It's a long shot but you never know.

    I found this link, FWIW:

    http://www.ehow.com/how_11191_have-sunroof-installed.html

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

    It's called a TARGA!

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

I can't wait for Porsche to get rid of the sunroofs (or at least give me a delete option) - now someone wants a moonroof?

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

That and a back seat delete

Would be fine with me, but Back seat delete is fairly easily accomplished - it's hard the plug the hole in the roof.

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

Rear seat delete is available... in Europe.

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

WE NEED A CARRERA RS! no options, light weight!! same engine though, and CHEAPER not more Expensive hahahaha

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

All those Porsche sunroofs rattle. It did in my 996 and now in my 997S. They are the biggest piece of crap - It all started when they made them tilt as well as retract. I WANT NO SUNROOF. I would weld mine shut if I was convinced that all the guides, rails etc. would stop rattling. My fear is that I would weld it shut and all that crap would still rattle. Give me sunroof delete anytime - screw the moonroof.

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

Just today I remembered I had a sunroof, opened it up, enjoyed it for the stop and go. Then the road opens up and the speed increases and the sun roof becomes annoying noisy worthless "junk." Shut it immediately

Then traffic slows again and I was able to open it and enjoy some sunshine. BUT NOT FOR LONG. Things got faster, windier, noisier, and the thing seemed cursed!

Stupid thing! Should be banned in these speedy cars.

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

Really do not understand these arguements. If you want a 997 for the road with open top motoring then the Targa or cabriolet options seem to fit the bill. If you want a hardcore racer why not buy the Gt3 or a Cayman (if you don't want rear seats or a sunroof) Unless you are tracking the car I cannot see the issue with a cabriolet or targa , surely there have to be some compromises.

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

What is the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof?

And ahm... maybe this is an idead? Self adhesive sunroof (click here)

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

My question too! I always thought a sunroof and a moonroof were the same thing... i.e. that in the US, both terms are used whereas in places like the UK, we only call it a sunroof.

I thought a glass roof (e.g. Targa or a Merc SL panoramic glass roof) was something different altogether.

a sunroof is a metal retractable roof panel that you cannot see through. A moonroof is a glass retractable roof panel that you can see through. The Targa really is the ultimate moonroof.

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

I used to have a BMW with a glass sunroof not a metal panel. It also had a sliding interior panel to keep out the light. BMW called that a sunroof not a moonroof. I still think it's different word usages in different continents...

Thanks for enlightening me! Seems like I need to adapt my post about the self-adhesive sunroof to a self-adhesive moonroof then

HAHAHA! Funny!! I'd rather have a sunroof (solid metal) maybe these guys sell just the fake weatherstrip sticker!

    Yes, Thanks Tim, that helps.

I also hold the self-deploying narrow flap down (the one that pops up from the mechanism when opened) with a wad of paper sometimes. Believe it or not it gets QUIETER if you hold it down!

Can't remember which Bimmer I had that had a sunroof which was totally quiet at any speed! Was truely great!

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

I have a nice one in my Lexus GS 300.

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

When ordering mine, I asked the salesman about deleting the sunroof, but in the U.S. that is a "no-go" as Porsche would have to get one "crash-tested" by the U.S. Transportation Department before it could go on sale. They don't want to spend the money, as they figure they can't make it up and purchasers wouldn't want to pay a higher price for a car without a sunroof than one with a sunroof.

Aren't we fortunate to have the U.S. Transportation Department so concerned about our "safety."

Much as the government wants to listen to all our phone calls to make sure we're not saying naughty things...

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

Sunroof in the US should be an option as it is in ROW!!!!

Its sad indeed. I ordered my 997S with the sunroof-delete option... stiffer chasis, no rattles, and more headroom. I also got the -20mm/rear-lsd suspention which you can't get either in the US

    Re: Moonroof in 997 possible?

Yes also I just hate sun roof, totally useless, it's noisy and take 2 inches of head room, I just hope for 2009 model we can delete this .
