Which build date: May (MY '08) or August (MY'09)?

I have been offered these two build dates and I am conflicted. I am worried the GT1 block will be gone in 2009 but it is always hard for me to buy "last year's model" when the new one is only a few months longer wait. I appreciate the input.

Re: Which build date: May (MY '08) or August (MY'0

I was not aware that they were offering 09 build dates yet? I have been on a waiting list for months waiting for an 09 build date.

Re: Which build date: May (MY '08) or August (MY'0

    you leasing or buying?

Re: Which build date: May (MY '08) or August (MY'0

Get it asap & enjoy it the longest. If you wait for an 09 you may as well wait & get an S. If you wait long enough to get the S you may as well wait & get the 998 Turbo, it never ends & you cant win by waiting, not vs. Porsche. They'll always be the next version around the corner.

    Correction

I went in and talked nuts and bolts with the dealer and, surprise, the salesman was a bit misinformed. The 2009 car is an August allocation for PROBABLE September or October build with an estimated delivery of January or February 2009. All they can offer me is the first 2009 car the dealership gets. They want $10K non-refundable deposit without any allowance to allow me to back-out even if MSRP increases substantially and/or the GT1 block is eliminated.

    Re: Correction

I would stay as far away from that dealer as possible. 10K down is crazy. I have $1000 down on my 09 and it is even refundable. As for 08 or 09??? I would go with the 09. The 08 has seen a good amount of depreciation already. From what I am told you should be able to drive on 09 off the lot the beginning of September.

    Re: Correction

My dealership takes $10k deposits but its fully refundable in the event that the person getting the car changes his/her mind. It seems like it varies from dealership to dealership. My point is that it isn't so crazy to ask for a $10k deposit.

    Re: Correction

I guess I should consider myself lucky for them only asking $1000 then...But 10k really makes no sense when there is such demand for these build slots, there is no risk to the dealer. It may have something to do with the size of the dealership? Mine in Dallas is one of the largest in the country.

    Re: Correction

My dealership as I said asks for $10k deposits but I convinced them to take only $1k for mine.

    Re: Correction

$10k deposit is not excessive on a $150k+ car. Non-refundable is, unless you've ordered a custom pink on pink color combo...

    Re: Correction

It's Pounds10k in the UK (so about $20k)

    Re: Correction

AFAIK, the deposit is universally refundable in the USA. PCNA wants it's dealers to behave that way. Go to another dealer. You can buy/order the car anywhere and have it delivered at your dealer. Heck you're near Los Angeles, why not shop for it there?

BTW, unless weirdly optioned, doesn't a biga**ed deposit on a turbo seem a bit unnecessary? The cars sell "instantly," right?

LOL. That exchange rate was for ten minutes ago.

Yeh, I need to import more stuff from the US ASAP! Going to get some driving shoes, what else is cheap in the US (but doesn't have large import tax and VAT)?

    Half price Apple Mac perhaps

    ...sorry, we digress

I've changed my schedule, Need the extra time to spend as many dollars as possible ASAP.

For example: Now I go to my shrink four times a week.

Yea, funny you should mention it. I am new to Porsche but not uninformed. It amazes me how much BS some salesmen try to give you. The guy I talked to yesterday told me that many dealers are marking up their unsold lot 997TT's $50K and was offended when I laughed. I'm fine paying MSRP for an ordered car, but don't BS me about how these cars are almost impossible to get. Especially when the first two California dealers I called offered May and June builds. BTW, I am just bashing clueless salesmen - the handful of truly knowledgeable ones are a real pleasure.

Thanks for the advice of ordering elsewhere and having the car delivered locally. Sounds like that would be so easy.

    Re: Correction

I agree that 10k is not excessive for a deposit once the car is ordered. What it sounds like they are asking for is the 10k to put him on the wait list......10K is excessive for a wait list. Come to think of it the $1000 I paid is excessive since I have already purchased 2 cars in the past 6 years from them already.

Probably leasing since it is my "business car" and it is a bit cleaner for me that way.

I'm a bit impulsive so I would have trouble waiting - I want everything "NOW". I was in a similiar situation, but buying mine. Take a June delivery or wait until the fall for an '08. So, in just a few months my car was a year older, but I don't care. I got to have my car for a summer and don't even think about it anymore.

Since you're leasing, there should be even less reasons to wait. You'll (probably) be giving the car back after the lease is up, so it doesn't really matter. Unless there is something crazy with the residual or money factor on the two model year cars.

    Re: Correction

I was able to put $5,000 down with same dealer as Atomic80 - refundable (although no plans to do that of course!)

    Re: Correction

Tough tough call as it is so close to the possible facelift. Normally I would recommend to wait since it's only 3 month time for a newer design, but in this case there are so many questions: engine block change vs. more power, price increase, no allocation yet announced, etc.

Keep in mind that purely from "forum statistics," the Turbo has been refreshingly and amazingly cleared of RMS problem, a nasty thorn that still shows up, and still not being fixed correctly (!!!), surprisingly in GT3, and NA 997. This is a strong vote to buy this year.
    http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=397201

For sure, it would not be for aesthetic reason that I would wait; I do not like the new rear at all. IMHO, mid cycle upgrades invariably look so "forced" and frequently make the design needlessly more busy/complex, and this one is no exception.

Above all, do not forget about the possible price increase. Between 2007 and 2008, it was not too bad, around 2k or so IIRC. Because of the dollar weakness, this one may be a biggie that hurts. I don't think it's going to be that bad, but imagine getting PCCB brake for free if you order this year!

A few years from now, we may look back at 2008 as a vintage year for the Turbo.
